Phil Mickelson Refuses to Break Silence Over Grant Horvat's PGA Tour Snub

During the first round of the Open Championship, Lefty carded a solid 1-under 70, marking it his best round at an Open in seven years. It included four birdies and a jaw-dropping bunker hole-out that had the crowd roaring. Phil Mickelson's 70 (-1) at Royal Portrush marks his best round at an Open since 2018. First sub-par major round since — Underdog Golf (@UnderdogGolf) July 17, 2025 "Yeah, that was a crazy one," Mickelson told reporters when asked about the "Phil magic" out there. "It was really one of maybe two poor shots I hit, I felt. "I was just trying to save bogey, and I got lucky and it went in. I really hit a lot of good shots today, and it wasn't too stressful." But while Mickelson's short-game magic was on full display, he wasn't as forthcoming when asked about Grant Horvat's PGA Tour snub. Phil Mickelson denies commenting on Grant Horvat's PGA Tour snub Horvat, the YouTube golf star and Mickelson's frequent collaborator, recently declined a sponsor's exemption to the Barracuda Championship after the PGA Tour refused to allow filming during tournament play. He's the nicest guy, and he's been very helpful for me to kind of get into the YouTube space, a space that I don't really know a lot about." But when pressed further, "Do you think that's a missed opportunity?" Mickelson shut it down, stating, "I'm not going to go into the weeds on that. I just really like him." The LIV professional, known for his outspoken takes on the PGA Tour, chose not to weigh in, perhaps because Horvat is not just a friend but also his business partner. The incident first caught fire when Horvat, boasting 1.38 million YouTube subscribers, stated, "The only reason I was in the position to receive an invitation like this is because of YouTube and you all watching the videos, so if I'm going to play, we want film it." Since then, the debate over who is correct is on. What is your opinion? Let us know in the comment section below! More Golf: Former PGA Tour pro apologizes to crowd after wild shot at British Open

Phil Mickelson Confident, Lefty is Not Done at US Open
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After missing the cut at the US Open, Phil Mickelson walked off the 18th green at Oakmont with a quiet nod to the sparse crowd, a soft wave, and a lingering glance at the leaderboard. It felt like goodbye. Especially after his statement, "There's a high likelihood that it will be," earlier that week when asked if the 2025 U.S. Open would be his last. The 54-year-old had missed the cut by one stroke, carding back-to-back 74s to finish 8-over. He handed out golf gloves to walking officials in the rain, shook hands with volunteers, and declined media requests. But less than two weeks later, the 6-time major champion seems to be rethinking that sentiment. (Photo by) More Getty Images Speaking at the LIV Golf Dallas press conference on Thursday, Mickelson offered a different tone. "So I said it's very possibly my last, and I think that's real," he acknowledged. "However, I also feel like I'm starting to play some good golf, and I've had—this year has been my best year on LIV. I've had three top-6 finishes and some opportunities to win." The numbers back him up. Mickelson finished solo third at LIV Golf Hong Kong in March, shooting 67-65-64 for a 14-under total. That was his best result since joining the league in 2022. He followed that with a T4 at LIV Golf Virginia in June, where he shot 67-68-65. And if that was not enough, he currently ranks 11th in the LIV individual standings with 55.68 points. "If I play like that in some upcoming major championships, that could ultimately qualify me into another U.S. Open," he stated. "I don't want to say it's my last". Mickelson's five-year exemption into the U.S. Open, earned with his 2021 PGA Championship win, expired this year. Without it, his path back would require a top-10 finish in a major, a high enough position in the OWGR, or a special exemption from the USGA. He could also attempt to qualify through sectional qualifying, something he hasn't done since 1993. (Photo by) More Getty Images "I actually think I'm playing well enough that if I can play at the level I've played at out here in majors again, I'll finish high enough to get into a U.S. Open via that qualifying avenue," he added. "So I don't want to say that it is my last because I think I'm going to contend in the—I'm in the other three majors for a lot of years, and it could very well get me into the U.S. Open again." Lefty has been chasing the career Grand Slam since 2004, and the U.S. Open remains the lone missing piece. He has finished runner-up six times, more than any player in history, most recently in 2013 at Merion. For now, his showdown at the LIV Golf Dallas on Friday is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. ET at Maridoe Golf Club. If his recent form holds, the door to Shinnecock in 2026 may not be closed just yet. 26-Year-Old Ex-LIV Golfer Set to Make PGA Tour Return
26-Year-Old Ex-LIV Golfer Set to Make PGA Tour Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Rocket Classic tees off on Thursday with quite an impressive field, but a surprise last-minute addition is what grabbed the attention of the fans. Advertisement James Piot has been added to the field on an unrestricted sponsor's exemption, the PGA Tour announced Monday. The event, set at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan, will feature 150 players competing for a $9.6 million purse. Piot, 26, is a native of Farmington Hills and a 2021 U.S. Amateur champion. He turned professional in May 2022 and immediately joined LIV Golf, competing in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He represented HyFlyers GC in LIV Golf before finishing 47th on the individual points list in 2023, which led to his relegation following the promotions event. His final LIV appearance occurred in mid‑October 2023, marking the end of a two‑year stint with the breakaway tour. This marks Piot's first PGA Tour start since 2022 when he competed in several invitationals, including the Masters and U.S. Open, but missed the cut in each. Piot's return to PGA Tour competition will be closely watched. Besides him, recent Travelers Championship winner Keegan Bradley is the one to watch going into this tournament. Another one being Charles Schwab winner Ben Griffin and rookie Luke Clanton. Former LIV golfer James Piot making PGA Tour return
June 24 - Former LIV Golf competitor James Piot will make PGA Tour history this week at the Rocket Classic. A late addition Monday to the field at Michigan's Detroit Golf Club, he is the first former LIV player to receive a sponsor's exemption on the PGA Tour, according to Golf Digest. Piot, 26, a native of Farmington Hills, Mich., last competed on the PGA Tour in 2022 when the 2021 U.S. Amateur champion missed the cut at the Masters and the U.S. Open. "There was a lot of support, and it was one or the happiest calls I've made," tournament official Mark Hollis told the Detroit News. "He's somebody we wanted in from the get-go as we were going through the process. It had to play out the way it played out." Piot is not the first LIV player to return to the PGA Tour. England's Laurie Canter has competed in five events so far in 2025. "For it to actually happen is the coolest thing in the world," Piot told the Detroit News. "It's awesome. Just the fact I finally get to play in the Rocket Classic, it's a dream come true. Ever since the event was created on the schedule, I wanted to be a part of it." Piot became part of the first wave of players to sign with the breakaway, Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit during the summer of 2022, reportedly receiving a guaranteed two-year, $6 million deal. Competing with LIV Golf from 2022-23, he recorded only one top-10 finish with a T6 in Bangkok in October 2022. Part of captain Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC team, he finished 47th in individual points in 2023 and was relegated to the Asian Tour. PGA Tour rules require a one-year ban for players who compete in unauthorized events like LIV Golf. Piot became eligible again lat October. --Field Level Media

Phil Mickelson goes out with a whimper, misses cut at potentially last US Open
A birdie would have let Mickelson stick around for the weekend at his 34th — and perhaps last — trip to the national championship. Wearing a white hat featuring the logo of his LIV Golf team, the HyFlyers GC, Mickelson stood over the line trying to get the right read. When the putt slid a foot left of the hole to keep Mickelson one outside the cut at plus-8, a small groan arose from those who stuck around. There was a shout or two of 'We love you Phil!' Along the railing, a man leaned toward a friend and said, 'His exemption is done. No more U.S. Open for you, Phil.' Advertisement Maybe, maybe not. Related : The five-year exemption into the tournament that Mickelson received when he Advertisement Mickelson sure isn't saying. He politely declined to talk to reporters after emerging from the scoring area, disappearing into the clubhouse and an uncertain future at a tournament where he's been a runner-up six times. There are a number of ways for Mickelson to make it to Shinnecock next June. The USGA could offer him an exemption, as it did at Torrey Pines in 2020, though that doesn't appear to be USGA chief championship officer John Bodenhamer's first choice. 'I think the way that we would also think of Phil is we hope he earns his way in, and I think he'd tell you the same thing,' Bodenhamer said Wednesday. 'That's what he did last time. We gave him one and then he went out and won the PGA Championship. So wouldn't put it past him.' A lot has happened since then. Both on the course and off it. The man known universally as 'Lefty' played a major role in LIV Golf's rise, a move that has taken a bit of the shine off of his popularity back home. And while Mickelson's game can still show flashes — he really did Related : Advertisement Mickelson appeared to be in solid position to play the weekend when he stood on the 15th tee. He was even on the day and 4 over for the tournament, well inside the cut line. A tee shot into the ankle deep rough at the 489-yard par 4 led to double bogey. He still seemed to be OK when he got to 17, a short uphill par 4. His tee shot sailed into the rough above a greenside bunker. There would be no magic this time. His attempted flop splashed into the sand instead. He blasted out to 25 feet and three-putted for another double bogey. That put him in a position he's been familiar with for a long time: heading to 18 at the US Open needing to make a birdie of consequence. It didn't happen. And as he disappeared into the clubhouse, along with it came the realization that at this point, it likely never will.
