Beni Mellal-Khenifra: Morocco, Korea's KOICA Partner to Improve Maternal, Child Health
Rabat – Morocco's Ministry of Health and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have signed a $11 million deal to improve maternal and child health in the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region. A statement from the Korean company said the agreement was signed on June 26, marking the 'beginning of a $11 million initiative funded by KOICA.' The initiative will be implemented over four years from 2025 to 2029, the statement said, noting that the project seeks to reduce preventable maternal, neonatal, and child mortality in the region. It also seeks to improve nutrition care service in rural areas in the region, the press release indeed, conveying KOICA's determination to support the implementation of technical on-site capacity-building training and health equipment and performance monitoring in low-performing health facilities. The project is part of the company's expansion after the 'successful implementation' of a project in the Tetouan-Tangier-Al Hoceima region. Hyewon Cho, Country Director of KOICA, commented on the agreement, noting that the partnership highlighted Korea's commitment to supporting Morocco's healthcare system. 'KOICA stands ready to be a key partner in strengthening primary health services in Beni-Mellal-Khenifra,' Cho said. According to the company, Morocco's Ministry of Health is expected to provide full administrative and technical support to ensure the implementation of the project, highlighting both parties' determination to engage to achieve project goals and ensure sustainability. In May, the World Bank shed light on Morocco's genuine efforts to tackle maternal and infant mortality rates. Despite the commendable efforts, however, the World Bank acknowledged that this issue continues to be an issue affecting the country, especially in rural areas. 'Out of 100,000 live births in 2018, 111 mothers died in rural areas compared with 45 in urban areas,' the World Bank said, noting that there were also 26 deaths per 1,000 births in rural areas compared with 19 in urban areas. Korea Donates Equipment to Support Parenting Education in Sidi Taibi
Rabat – The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in partnership with the Association for the Promotion of Moroccan-Korean Cooperation (AMACO), today donated 315 items of sports and office equipment to the Al Wafaa Association for Social and Cultural Development in Sidi Taibi, Kenitra. The handover ceremony took place today at the Sidi Taibi commune headquarters. Hyewon Cho, KOICA's Resident Representative in Morocco, joined Mohamed Moussa, President of AMACO, and Yassin Hafid, President of Al Wafaa Association, to sign the official donation certificate. The package included tablet chairs, a desk, a printer, sports vests, footballs, basketballs, and other materials specifically selected to furnish a newly established training center for Positive Parenting Education and to support youth development programs. Speaking at the event, Cho said that KOICA is committed to its belief that sport and education are fundamental drivers of personal growth and social cohesion. He added that with this donation, the agency aims to enrich extracurricular activities and empower both children and their families with the tools they need to cultivate their physical, social, and mental capacities. After the ceremony, 'children laced up their shoes and poured onto the field, kicking off their first football match with the new donated equipment, showing contagious excitement and renewed energy,' said KOICA in a press release. This development comes as bilateral relations between Morocco and Korea continue to strengthen across diplomatic and economic fronts. Seoul today took a pro-Morocco stance regarding the Western Sahara issue and acknowledged the country's Autonomy Plan presented to the UN Secretary-General in April 2007. 'Korea takes note of the Moroccan autonomy proposal presented in April 2007 to the Secretary-General of the UN and welcomes serious and credible Moroccan efforts to move the process forward towards a resolution of this issue,' the statement declared. This diplomatic endorsement marks a significant milestone in the growing political affinity between the two countries, which have been keen on strengthening cooperation in various sectors. Korea's flagship rolling-stock manufacturer Hyundai Rotem recently announce a landmark agreement with Morocco's National Railway Office (ONCF). The MAD 15 billion (approximately USD 1.5 billion) contract, the largest ever awarded to the company, will supply double-deck train sets capable of speeds up to 160 km/h. These new trains are set to link Casablanca with key urban centers across Morocco, modernizing the rail network in time for the country's co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

The $13 million project, funded by KOICA, will bring eco-friendly electric buses to Rabat and promote green transportation awareness, the agency said in a press release. The initiative will also benefit from Korean expertise in sustainable mobility by ensuring the successful adoption of advanced solutions, added the statement. The project is set to run from 2025 to 2028. The agreement was signed by KOICA's Country Director in Morocco Hyewon Cho and Rabat's Mayor Fatiha El Moudni. The agency said that the partnership strengthens cooperation between Korea and Morocco in promoting environmentally friendly transport. 'Both parties are committed to ensuring the effective implementation of the project and maximizing its impact on sustainable urban transportation in Rabat,' added the statement.
