A new Marilyn Monroe movie? AI makes it possible
Hi there, Mick: Sooner or later, we're going to get movies that star well-known actors' AI avatars. And not strangely Plasticine CGI stuff, but fully realized, natural-looking characters. Will it enhance or diminish the moviegoing experience? Richard Leavitt, Oakland Hi there, Richard: The temptations here are great. I'd like to see Marilyn Monroe in a good movie where, for once, she doesn't play an idiot. I'd like to see how beautiful, mature and interesting she might have been in her 40s, and I'd like to see James Dean in his 30s. I can think of lots of things I'd like to see. Further, I can imagine a time when every actor has two bodies of work — the work they did, and the work that was done to them, without their consent. But in the end, this has to be about something more than the enhancement or diminishment of the movie experience. To take an actor's spirit, put it into a fake, computer-generated body and then force it to do things they never did and wouldn't do — that strikes me as the virtual definition of dying and going to hell. Fortunately, the marketplace will curtail some of this. There's never going to be a huge vogue for dead actors, though I can imagine one or two having the hellish misfortune of breaking through. Dear Mick LaSalle: Concerning ' the deft Lepard ' (a play on words in LaSalle's review of 'Dangerous Animals,' in which he praises writer Nick Lepard's script as 'deft'), I can't help asking if you're actually a Def Leppard fan or just taking advantage of the opportunity? I went to Brooklyn in 2019 to see their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Dear Cindy Ward: I'm probably not as intense a fan as you, but I'm definitely a fan. Back in the day, I bought 'Pyromania' and 'Hysteria,' and later I got their greatest hits. In particular, I played the 'Hysteria' album over and over. The main thing I like about Def Leppard is that, though they're often called a heavy metal band, they have a real gift for melody. 'Armageddon It,' 'Photograph,' 'Animal' — just to name three songs of many — have great melodies, and more than that, they're generous with them. Even the guitar licks are pretty. I think they're terrific. Hi, Mick: Thank you for bringing up the idea of welcoming Kevin Spacey back! I would love to see ' All the Money in the World ' the way it was originally filmed, and would really love to see the shelved Gore Vidal biography starring Spacey. Ann Winters, Santa Cruz Hi, Ann: At this point, with Spacey acquitted on both sides of the Atlantic, the only reason to keep him out of movies is that he's not a nice guy. But nobody has any investment in Spacey being a nice guy. Have you ever seen him interviewed? Spacey can't even imitate a nice guy. There's a fascinating documentary, ' Now: In the Wings on a World Stage ' (2014), which shows Spacey taking his production 'Richard III' around the world. Though the movie was intended as a puff piece, it makes it clear that the whole cast was scared of him, and with reason. But do I care about this? No, because it isn't surprising. Yes, I'd be disappointed if I found out that George Clooney is a creep, because he seems like such a good guy, but Spacey? Who else are you going to get to play a fabulously talented creep like Gore Vidal. Tom Hanks? As for 'All the Money in the World,' I'd pay money to see the Spacey version, but not because of Spacey, but rather to see how Michelle Williams played opposite Spacey versus Christopher Plummer, who took over the role. Actors listen and react in the moment, and I want to see how a great actress responds to the different energies of two very different actors.

7 spook-tastic haunted attractions in Dubai for all the chills and thrills
We'll be honest — we're absolutely not built for jump scares. But for those fearless thrill-seekers who laugh in the face of haunted halls and creepy encounters… how do you do it? If that's you, there are plenty of spine-tingling attractions in Dubai ready to test your nerves this summer. From eerie walkthroughs and immersive set-ups to live actors lurking in the shadows, these terrifying spots promise heart-pounding fun for the brave. Hysteria We would like to preface this by saying that after visiting this attraction you may end up peeking behind the shower curtain every time you enter the washroom in deep paranoia – don't come at us. Hysteria, located in Dubai Mall, is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but if you're up to the scares, it's good fun. It's priced at Dhs105 per person, and visitors under 16 are recommended not to enter. Book here. Insidious Escape Room This one is inspired by the wildly popular movie franchise and looks just as scary. You get 60 minutes inside the room to decipher the clues, solve the puzzles and get out. It's a great activity to do if you've got a bunch of horror-loving friends in tow. The attraction is only open to participants over the age of 15 and you'll need a minimum of two people to play the game. Book here. The Haunted Hotel The Haunted Hotel inside IMG Worlds of Adventure has been touted by many as insanely spooky and, to be frank, the description of what you can expect makes us want to get into bed and hide under the blanket (the ultimate protection from all things evil). The landscape of the hotel changes constantly as you try to find your way out through the maze of corridors, of course engaging in meet-cutes (sorry) with the spooky characters throughout. It's open to visitors aged 15 and above only. Make sure to carry your Emirates ID if you're below 18. Book here. Deep Dark Dubai If you can somehow function at full brain capacity while you're being chased with a machete, then this one's for you. The escape rooms of Deep Dark Dubai are housed in a villa and follow two themes – Paranormal and The Sinner. You and your gang must put your heads together and try to get out in 60 minutes. The rooms also feature live actors to keep you on your toes the whole time. Exciting or stressful? You decide. Book here. Haunted Activity Haunted Activity, the newest spooky story on the block opened its doors in January this year. There are two rooms you can explore in this game – Ouija and Jason's Home, with two more called Cemetery and The School, coming soon. You'll need a team of two to 10 brave friends to have a go at getting out in, wait for it…60 minutes. Fun. Book here. Horror Cinema Not one for the faint-hearted. At Dubai's first horror cinema, you will watch some of the best horror movies in cinema history, but.. you won't be alone. And no, we aren't talking about your seven mates sitting next to you in the cinema. Professional actors will pop up at the film's tensest moments, so hiding behind your hands won't save you. The cinema also features high-tech special effects, splashes, flashes and realistic sounds and your movie will of course be in full HD resolution. Prices start from Dhs180. At the moment, the cinema is screening The Ring , Insidious, Insidious 2 and Insidious: Chapter 3. Book here. BlackOut Escape Rooms Count us out of this one. The BlackOut Escape Rooms feature four different themed games to play, inspired by exorcisms, mental hospitals and Saw-esque torture techniques – all generally terrible things one tries to avoid. Every game has a different level of difficulty, but they all share elements like live actors, flashing lights and a lot of scares. Pull up your socks, put on your big boy pants and gather a crowd – safety in numbers, as they say. @blackoutbycave Images: Supplied/ Social Media > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in

Muse appear to tease return with new song Unravelling
Muse appear to be teasing a new song called Unravelling. Matt Bellamy and co have been dropping teasers about their return for a few weeks now, and it looks like new music is imminent. The British rock band posted a snippet of a video of an unreleased song and captioned the Instagram post: "Back at it." The word Unravelling then flashes up on the screen at the end. A previous animated clip teased: 'Something's coming…" Muse also posted a picture of their silhouette and wrote: "An insect trapped in amber.' In February, bassist Chris Wolstenholme revealed they were planning to work on a new album "fairly soon". The Hysteria rockers' last full-length record was 2022's Will of the People, and he said they were keen to get started on a follow-up and ink a new record deal. Speaking on an episode of The Leona Graham Podcast, he spilled: 'We will [sign to a label], obviously. I think we're gonna start work on the next record fairly soon. 'I think for the last few albums we've been with Warner and we've extended after each album. We may do the same again; we may go with a new label, who knows.' The trio - which is completed by drummer Dominic Howard - needed the time to "reset" and Chris admits that there will be "bigger" gaps between records. He said: 'When you finish touring an album, and [when] the band has been around a bit longer, the gaps between albums get a little bit bigger. I don't think we can be banging out new albums every two years like we used to. 'But it gives you that opportunity to reset a little bit and think about what's gonna happen going forward.' He had suggested that fans would have to wait until 2026 for their 10th studio album. He continued: 'I think we'll start very, very soon, like in the next couple of months. 'We've got a few gigs in June. Only a handful – that's the only gigs we're doing this year. 'I don't think the idea is to do anything really serious until next year, so I would imagine that 2026 will be a new album, barring any disasters.' During Muse's downtime, Chris has been busy with a side project called Chromes, who released their first two tracks, Imaginary World and The Good Life, in October, with the musician on lead vocals. Chromes' latest track was The One, released on June 6.

Rosie O'Donnell to perform in two back-to-back comedy shows in Dublin ahead of 3Olympia gig
Ahead of her 3Olympia Theatre show in July, US comedian Rosie O'Donnell will headline two Dublin shows on June 11. Spoons!, a show for neurodivergent and disabled comedians, takes place at Sin É on Ormond Quay. O'Donnell will donate her fee to AsIAm. Ian Lynam ( Autistic License) will be MC, joined by Jay Fitz, Jo Jarvie, MJ Stokes, and Nate Thomas. Speaking to the Irish Examiner on booking The Flintstones and Tarzan star, Mr Lynam said: "Rosie had already begun performing in Irish venues, but expressed an interest in playing to a specifically queer audience. 'She also enquired about Spoons!, my show featuring a line-up of neurodivergent and disabled performers. I think it's no surprise that both causes would be close to her heart. 'Rosie's LGBT+ bona fides speak for themselves, with continued advocacy since at least 2002. This has only intensified through her child Clay, who is non-binary. Clay is also autistic, which leads to [Rosie's] interest in Spoons!. 'Rosie has not been regularly performing in over a decade and, overall, I think she's looking for fresh and diverse audiences to test her material out. 'I was amazed to hear of her interest in Hysteria [Comedy at Sin É], but I was even more amazed that she was agreeing to do two shows back-to-back in one night.' The decision to donate her fee to AsIAm 'is linked to her advocacy on Clay's behalf', according to Mr Lynam 'She has donated the fee from every performance so far to the non-profit. I think to truly advocate for queer people is to advocate for neurodivergent people and vice-versa,' he said. 'Organisations like AsIAm argue that there is no single 'right' way for a person to exist and advocate so the same opportunities and dignities can be afforded to all people, regardless of their support needs.' Actress and comedian Rosie O'Donnell, along with her 12-year-old autistic daughter Clay joined hundreds of people attending the AsIAm Same Chance - Walk for Autism in Dublin at Dublin's Malahide Castle. Picture: Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland Later that evening, O'Donnell will be special guest in Token Straight Presents: Rosie O'Donnell & Friends from 8pm at Sin É. For Felix O'Connor, MC of the show, securing O'Donnell for a Pride month gig was 'equal parts thrill and nerves'. 'I think my first reaction was: 'Oh god, is our little club going to be worth her while? Is she going to be insulted with what we can offer her to headline?' She's obviously such a comedy legend. Hysteria is a comedy collective where Token Straight and ticketed shows operate on a profit-share model. Token Straight is the longest-running queer comedy night in Dublin and, Mr O'Connor believes, the only queer stand-up night currently operating. Other LGBT+ shows include Queer Note Glitter Cabaret and Egg in Bello Bar, while drag and one-off Pride shows happen elsewhere. Hysteria has worked with AsIAm before, with several collective members on the spectrum or with ADHD. Rosie was already working with AsIAm when contacted, he added. Actress and comedian Rosie O'Donnell on right walks with Adam Harris is the Founder and CEO of AsIAm and Eric Roberts Social Media Star joined hundreds of people attending the AsIAm Same Chance - Walk for Autism in Dublin at Dublin's Malahide Castle. Picture:Leon Farrell/Photocall Ireland First-time audiences to Spoons! can expect 'a rich mix of performers from various backgrounds and identities,' Mr Lynam said. 'The ideal for Spoons! is to be material by neurodivergent artists for neurodivergent audiences. I want to create a space where autistic people can enjoy comedy without worrying they'll be picked on by someone on stage. 'One thing that Spoons! offers that makes it unique is that it's the one comedy show that still encourages performers and audience to wear masks. 'While it's easy to feel like covid is over, the reality is I saw a lot of friends with chronic illnesses and conditions too afraid to return to live shows in case they risked infection. The mask rule isn't about judging anyone or making them feel like they're doing something wrong, I'm just trying to carve out one safe space in a pub basement for my community to gather. 'On a personal note, I was recently diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and may need to begin immunosuppressants, so this rule is now for my protection just as much as anyone else,' he added. The former The View co-host moved to Ireland after wildfires destroyed her Malibu home and following Donald Trump's re-election. On March 11, O'Donnell said on TikTok she is applying for Irish citizenship, as her grandparents were Irish. 'I'm trying to find a home here… when it's safe for all citizens to have equal rights in America, we'll consider coming back,' she said on TikTok. Spoons! starts at 6:30pm, with tickets from €8 on Eventbrite. The 8 p.m. Token Straight show is sold out. Hysteria Comedy runs three weekly shows at Sin É (@hysteriaireland on Instagram). Rosie O'Donnell's solo stand-up show, Common Ground, will take place at Dublin's 3Olympia Theatre on Sunday, July 27.

Peacock Cancels Five Shows
The streaming platform Peacock, much like the other major streaming services, has to make touch decisions when curating its streaming library. Unfortunately, these decisions aren't always taken easily by fans, and many subscribers are devastated by the recent decision by Peacock to cancel as many as five shows from their platform. As you can see below, many of the complaints shared on social media feel as though Peacock didn't properly market these original shows. Therefore, they claim Peacock itself is to blame for the poor viewership numbers, while other fans are simply disappointed to have these shows end with cliffhangers and unfinished storylines. It's the abrupt cancellations of shows that lead to these unfinished narratives, and as such, it's understandable why fans are frustrated. After all, it's disappointing when you choose to invest your time into a series only to find that there's no payoff by the end. Nevertheless, that's the case with two of the five cancellations that can be traced back to April, the horror-thriller shows Teacup and Hysteria! with each having only lasted a single season. Other cancellations more recently announced by the platform include Mr. Throwback , Based on a True Story , and Laid . In fact, the decision to cancel Laid in particular has sparked some strong backlash online, with fans sharing the following reactions on X: This was a lovely show. They did no promotions btw — Mr. Sushi (@Barasimgha) May 30, 2025 @peacock oh my God, you guys canceled #BasedOnATrueStory WHAT THE hell is wrong with you?!? 🤬 and I got all excited about #Laid haven't even had a chance to enjoy it yet AND just read you guys canceled that too?! WHAT THE FVCK YOU SUCK!! — Estefany Bella (@Stephanie808831) June 5, 2025 I really loved Laid (on Peacock) and I'm so sad it's canceled 🥲 — Lauren Milberger (@LaurenMilberger) June 2, 2025 Another case of original ideas being ignored to the point of letting them rot and die. — Hollowfox (@HollowfoxAlt) May 29, 2025 Cancellations are without a doubt one of the pieces of television or streaming that no one wants to encounter. Unfortunately, due to the business side of things, these cancellations are inevitable. It doesn't make it any easier, however, when the shows are still canceled without proper conclusions or, at the very least, a marketing campaign that tries to make continuing these shows a worthwhile effort. Ultimately, we'll have to see if Peacock continues to make decisions in this manner or if they'll try to make some of these cancellations easier on fans and subscribers. Are for now, however, it looks like Teacup , Hysteria! , Mr. Throwback , Based on a True Story , and Laid have all come to an abrupt end.
