Law enforcement video shows Bryan Kohberger in traffic stop months before Idaho murders

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho sheriff's office has released body-worn camera footage showing Bryan Kohberger during a traffic stop that occurred months before he killed four University of Idaho students in 2022. The video was released by the Latah County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. The video shows an August 2022 traffic stop, when Deputy Darren Duke pulled Kohberger over for speeding on a highway that runs between Moscow, Idaho, and Pullman, Washington. Kohberger is driving the same white Hyundai Elantra that police say he drove on Nov. 13, 2022, when he killed Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in a rental home near the University of Idaho campus. The deputy ticketed Kohberger for not wearing a seat belt before sending him on his way. Some of the law enforcement agencies that worked on the murder case have announced that they will release documents related to the investigation now that Kohberger has been sentenced to life in prison.

New video shows Bryan Kohberger pulled over for speeding months before murders

Bodycam footage released this week showed an Idaho sheriff's deputy pulling over future killer Bryan Kohberger, who cordially answered questions nearly three months before slaughtering four college students and launching a nationwide manhunt. Kohberger was going at least 42 mph in a 35 mph zone near West Pullman and Farm Roads at about 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 21. 2022, according to an incident report written by Latah County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Duke. The deputy asked Kohberger if he was wearing his seatbelt and the motorist copped to it. "Were you wearing your seat belt when I stopped you?" the deputy inquired. "No," he answered. "Just being honest with you." "I appreciate that," the deputy responded. After running Kohberger's name through the system, the deputy let him off for the speeding but wrote a ticket for failure to wear seatbelts. Kohberger appeared to be slightly annoyed about being ticketed, after answering the deputy's seatbelt question. The deputy explained seatbelts were a departmental enforcement emphasis and he had no real choice but to cite him for the $10 infraction. The Washington State University doctoral student was allowed to drive away in his white Hyundai Elantra that evening. That vehicle played a key role in the search for and eventual arrest of Kohberger on Dec. 30 back in his native Pennsylvania. Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and burglary in the deaths of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, at an off-campus house. Kohberger admitted to the killings and waived his right to appeal in exchange for prosecutors' agreeing not to seek a death sentence. The deal prevented a tria l that had been set to start in August.

New video shows Bryan Kohberger bragging about being ‘honest' when stopped by cop months before Idaho murders

Newly released video shows Bryan Kohberger being stopped for speeding just months before he murdered four University of Idaho students in their home — showing him trying to persuade the cop to trust him because he's so 'honest.' The footage was being held for use in Kohberger's trial, but has now been released after he unexpectedly admitted to murdering roommates Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, according to the Idaho Statesman, which shared the footage. It shows him being pulled over around 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2022, in his white Hyundai Elantra — the same car he drove to murder the students in their home less than three months later. 3 Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to killing four University of Idaho students. Latah County Sheriff's Office After being told he was stopped for going 43 mph in a 35 mph zone, Kohberger readily admits that he wasn't wearing his seat belt. 'I'm just being honest with you,' the cold-blooded killer tells the officer, with his iconic blank stare and bushy eyebrows visible through his window. 3 Kohberger was pulled over for driving 43 mph in a 35 mph zone, the newly released footage shows. Latah County Sheriff's Office 'I appreciate that,' the cop kindly responds — telling Kohberger he's still giving him a $10 citation, while letting him off for speeding. The deputy quickly runs Kohberger's information and issues him the ticket. But rather than just drive off, Kohberger asks the officer hypothetical questions about what would have happened if he lied about wearing his seat belt. 'Just for future reference, I'm obviously not this person, like I told you I wasn't wearing my seat belt — do people lie to you about that? Say I lied to you about that?' he asks the deputy. 'Could you honestly go back and look at that?' The deputy says he noticed Kohberger was not strapped in when he walked up to his car, and was just trying to make clear how important it was for his safety to wear one. 3 Kohberger was pulled over in the same vehicle he drove the night he killed the four roommates. via REUTERS The 11:40 p.m. traffic stop took place along Pullman-Moscow Highway, which connects Washington State University Pullman — where Kohberger was attending as a graduate criminal justice student — and Moscow, Idaho, where the University of Idaho is located, according to the Idaho Statesman. The white Hyundai was a key piece of evidence in the prosecution's case against Kohberger. Kohberger will spend the rest of his life in prison after he pleaded guilty to killing the four college friends last week. By confessing, he dodged a lengthy trial and possibly the death penalty by firing squad, if found guilty by the jury.

Serial killer stopped by cops three months before murders in chilling footage

Bryan Kohberger, 30, is serving life in prison without parole (Image: Idaho Department of Corrections) Chilling police bodycam footage has surfaced showing the moment Bryan Kohberger - now convicted of murdering four University of Idaho students - was pulled over for speeding just months before the brutal killings. The video, captured in August 2022, shows a Latah County Sheriff's deputy stopping Kohberger on the Pullman-Moscow Highway, which links Washington State and Idaho. Kohberger, then a PhD criminology student, was driving a white Hyundai Elantra - the same car later connected to the crime. The footage was originally set to be used at trial, but was made public after Kohberger accepted a plea deal. "Hey there, I stopped you going a little fast. You realize this is 35?" Kohberger replied, shaking his head several times, "Oh, it's 35? I was going about 41, about that," before handing over his documents. During the stop, Kohberger also acknowledges he hadn't been wearing a seatbelt. "No point in not being honest," he says calmly when questioned. The deputy issues him a $10 citation for the seatbelt violation but lets the speeding slide. Kohberger appears cooperative but becomes slightly defensive when asked for a contact number, insisting he was being upfront. "Just for future reference, I mean I'm obviously an obvious person. I told you I wasn't wearing my seatbelt," Kohberger says. "But people lie to you about that, say I lied to you about that...," he adds. He then asks Deputy Duke if he "usually" looks to see if drivers are wearing seatbelts. Less than three months later, on November 13, 2022, Kohberger broke into a rental home near the University of Idaho campus in Moscow and fatally stabbed four students - Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, both 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20. The murders shocked the nation and led to a six-week manhunt, ending in Kohberger's arrest at his parents' home in Pennsylvania. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole last week, as families of the victims gave powerful impact statements. Kohberger declined to address the court, simply saying: "Respectfully decline." He will serve his sentence at Idaho's Maximum Security Institution.
