Colorado mountain travel along I-70 to see heavy congestion over July 4th holiday weekend
Those driving to Colorado's mountains to celebrate the Fourth of July weekend will likely encounter heavy traffic along Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 285. The holiday kicks off higher traffic volume in the high country, with summer tourism hitting its peak over the next six to seven weeks, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. The department is urging motorists to plan ahead if traveling to or from the mountains July 3-6. The Fourth of July is on Friday. Last year over the Fourth of July holiday period, more than 235,000 vehicles traveled through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial tunnels along I-70. With the holiday falling on Friday, westbound I-70 will see the heaviest volume the afternoon of July 3 through the morning of July 4. Heaviest I-70 eastbound returning traffic from the mountains will take place the afternoon of July 6, which is Sunday. Here are ways you can beat the congestion: This allows you to see the travel forecast to plan your departure time. For real-time traffic information, road conditions and live cameras. To ease congestion, the Colorado Department of Transportation is suspending all construction and maintenance work across the state starting at noon July 3 through the morning of July 7. That means less of a bottleneck at major projects like the I-70 Floyd Hill Project, which suspended construction starting June 30. Congestion still may occur in construction areas due to reduced speed limits. Leave the driving to someone else by taking public transportation options, including Bustang, Pegasus and Bustang Outrider. The buses provide service to many mountain areas, including Estes Park. I-70 near Floyd Hill to see traffic delays, overnight closures
DENVER (KDVR) — Interstate 70 near Floyd Hill will see an increase in traffic and overnight closures due to the I-70 Floyd Hill Project, according to a social media post from Gilpin County. Starting on June 16, travelers can expect significant traffic delays on I-70 near Idaho Springs. DOJ requests Colorado's 2024, 2020 voting records: 'Highly unusual and concerning' Rock scaling work in the area is expected to cause daytime traffic delays up to 45 minutes. The operations will take place for eight days, Mondays through Thursdays, over two weeks. Work will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m., though delays can extend to 4 p.m. There will be several traffic holds per day for approximately 60 to 75 minutes on I-70 between Veterans Memorial Tunnels and Homestead Road. The project will also include two full overnight closures of the westbound lanes of I-70 on June 16 and June 23. The closures will begin at 10 p.m. and last until 4:40 a.m. During the closures, there will be an installation of two new overhead electronic sign structures and a shift of westbound I-70 traffic toward the median from Mile Point 245 to the US 6 interchange. The slated schedule could be shifted due to inclement weather. Gilpin County said to plan ahead and drive safely in the work zone. To receive text updates on the project and traffic updates, text 'floydhill' to 21000 to opt in for alerts. More information about the project can be found on the Gilpin County website. Colorado Department of Transportation expands text alert notifications for I-70 mountain corridor
The Colorado Department of Transportation has expanded its text alert notifications on the I-70 mountain corridor this summer. That means that people traveling through the mountains this summer can sign up to receive text alerts for three areas along the heavily traveled road. CDOT said that because of the success of the texting campaign for the I-70 Floyd Hill Project, which has reached 15,000 subscribers, the text alerts will cover two additional areas: I-70 West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes Project and the I-70 Mountain Express Lanes. According to CDOT, drivers can sign up to receive real-time, day-of updates on traffic holds for rock scaling and blasting, emergency road work and Express Lane availability that is designed to make it easier to plan ahead and allow them to reach their destination. Additional Information from CDOT: How to Sign Up: Motorists can opt in or out of specific alerts based on travel needs. All updates will appear in a single text thread to easily track I-70 Mountain Corridor project activities. Text alerts for the I-70 Floyd Hill and I-70 West Vail Pass projects will provide weekly lookaheads and day-of reminders and updates on planned traffic holds for various construction operations. Text alerts for the I-70 Mountain Express Lanes will notify travelers of unexpected closures in the Express Lanes. Drivers can also get travel conditions on and the COTrip Planner App.
