IPL business worth over $18 billion, rises 13% in a year: Report

Representative image MUMBAI: IPL, cricket's annual showpiece event, has seen its business value jump 13% in a year to $18.5 billion - nearly Rs 1.6 lakh crore. At the same time, its brand value has risen 14% to nearly $4 billion (about Rs 33,000 crore), a report by NYSE-listed investment bank Houlihan Lokey, which has valued several sports franchises around the world, showed. The year also saw 2025 IPL winner Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking the top slot in terms of brand value among the 10 teams that compete in the league. The first-time winner in the league's 18-year history has a brand value of $269 million. In the brand valuation table, RCB is followed by Mumbai Indians at $242 million, Chennai Super Kings at $235 million and Kolkata Knight Riders at $227 million. "IPL continues to redefine sports commercialisation - not just in terms of cricketing excellence but through record auctions, landmark sponsorships, technological advancements, and an ever-expanding international footprint," the report said about the league's recent expansions and business growth. Calling IPL "a global phenomenon" that is at the intersection of sport, entertainment, and commerce, the report said that the league's "influence now extends far beyond the cricketing fraternity, reshaping fan engagement, commercial models, and the structure of the sport itself". The report pointed out that IPL's success has also catalysed a proliferation of short-format leagues across continents, "redefining the modern cricketing calendar and embedding itself as a cornerstone of contemporary popular culture". The report by Houlihan Lokey also estimated that the advertising revenue during the 2025 IPL had jumped a massive 50% to about $600 million (about Rs 5,000 crore). And in terms of viewership, the final match between RCB and Punjab Kings recorded over 678 million views, a number that was higher than the India-Pakistan clash during the ICC Championship in Feb this year, the report said. On IPL's revenue model, the report said that it represented "a near-perfect blend of predictable cash flows and cost discipline, a rarity in the global sports asset universe. "Revenues are underwritten by BCCI's long-term, well-negotiated media rights contracts and front-loaded sponsorship deals, creating annuity-like cash flows." For top franchisees, almost 80% of the costs are secured even before the tournament begins. "On the cost side, the presence of a salary cap (Rs 120 crore per team) functions as an embedded margin protector, preventing wage inflation (a major concern for global sports teams) and ensuring competitive parity among teams." In terms of costs and revenue models, IPL is seen to be superior to the English Premier League (EPL) of the UK and the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the US, the report noted. "For institutional investors, this makes the IPL not just a sports league but a high-growth compounder in the entertainment space, catering to a fast-growing fan base with rising disposable income and a strong appetite for premium digital experiences. IPL valuation hits $18.5 billion as franchise brands surge: Report

The Indian Premier League's (IPL) enterprise value has surged 12.9% to US$18.5 billion, with its standalone brand value rising 13.8% to US$3.9 billion over the past year, according to Houlihan Lokey's 2025 IPL Brand Valuation Study. The report underscores the IPL's continuing ascent as one of the world's most valuable sports leagues. Reflecting this momentum, the BCCI 's sale of four associate-sponsor slots — My11Circle, Angel One, RuPay, and CEAT — brought in ₹1,485 crore, a 25% increase over the previous cycle. The Tata Group extended its title sponsorship through 2028 in a five-year deal worth US$300 million (₹2,500 crore). In a notable reshuffle among franchises, Royal Challengers Bengaluru ( RCB ) climbed to the top spot with a brand value of US$269 million, up from US$227 million. Mumbai Indians rose from fourth to second, now valued at US$242 million. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) slipped to third at US$235 million, posting only marginal growth from US$231 million after a disappointing season. Punjab Kings (PBKS) recorded the highest year-on-year growth, with a 39.6% increase, while Lucknow Super Giants followed closely with over 34% growth. IPL 2025 viewership set new records across digital and TV platforms. JioHotstar registered 1,370 million views during the opening weekend (22 to 24 March), a 35% year-on-year jump, with 340 million peak concurrent viewers and 21,860 million minutes watched. Star Sports drew 253 million unique TV viewers, up 14% from last year, pushing combined total watch time to 49,560 million minutes. The season culminated in a historic final, with RCB defeating PBKS to win their maiden title. The match drew more than 678 million views on JioHotstar, surpassing the India-Pakistan game during the ICC Championship earlier this year. Live Events 'The IPL continues to set benchmarks in sports business. Franchise valuations have soared, media rights deals have reached record highs, and brand partnerships have diversified across sectors,' said Harsh Talikoti, Director, Financial and Valuation Advisory at Houlihan Lokey. 'The league's ability to attract global investors and sponsors reflects its status as a premier sports property with enduring appeal. In summary, the IPL represents a high-yield multi-asset class with diversified risks and a catalyst for cricket's global transformation. By blending sport, entertainment, and commerce, it has redefined how cricket is consumed and commercialised. Its growth trajectory, led by OTT penetration, blend of youthful and diverse audiences, global awareness, and asset creation (IP deals, women's league, new franchisees) is strong. As the sport continues to expand into new territories, the IPL's blueprint will remain central to shaping the future of cricket on the world stage.' 'From day one, we saw IPL as more than a cricket league. It was a scalable business model with high visibility, secure revenue streams, and strong brand-building potential. It was a heady mix of sports and entertainment, which eventually had the potential to deliver huge audiences and revenues,' said Satish Menon, CEO of Punjab Kings. 'We now operate with the mindset of a media-sport brand with multiple revenue verticals, not just a cricket team. That's where real profitability lies. Over time, we have built a sustainable sports business that spans multiple leagues, drives platform-level content, attracts global brands, and creates IPs that outlast a season.' RCB's rise to the top of both brand and business rankings came after breaking their 17-year title drought in 2025. The franchise struck a balance between continuity and reinvention, naming Rajat Patidar as captain while retaining Virat Kohli in a senior batting role. At US$242 million, Mumbai Indians, ranked second, maintained their reputation as a top-tier brand. Their on-field consistency and strategic evolution, highlighted by Rohit Sharma's transition into an impact player, have kept the franchise culturally and commercially relevant. Chennai Super Kings, despite their brand value increasing slightly to US$235 million, fell from first to third after a difficult season. A mid-season injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad forced Mahendra Singh Dhoni to retake the captaincy in what turned into a transitional phase. The team finished at the bottom of the table but remained a major brand presence thanks to Dhoni's influence. Kolkata Knight Riders, last year's champions, ranked fourth with a brand value of US$227 million. The team continues to benefit from the popularity of its marquee players and the enduring star power of owner Shah Rukh Khan. However, the exit of Shreyas Iyer dented both on-field performance and brand momentum. Sunrisers Hyderabad, in fifth place with US$154 million, entered the season with high expectations following a 2024 runner-up finish and a powerful batting lineup that included Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and new addition Ishan Kishan. Despite their firepower, inconsistency hampered their title push. Delhi Capitals ranked sixth with a brand value of US$152 million. Rajasthan Royals followed at seventh with US$146 million, bolstered by fan interest in emerging talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Gujarat Titans placed eighth at US$142 million. PBKS, at ninth with US$141 million, registered the highest growth in franchise value, propelled by their finals run under new captain Shreyas Iyer. Lucknow Super Giants rounded out the table at US$122 million.
