Gayton McKenzie hints at bonuses for Proteas as Temba Bavuma's men get heroes welcome
The Proteas received a heroes welcome at OR Tambo International airport after winning the World Test Championship final against Australia. Image: Itumeleng English/ Independent Newspapers Sports minister Gayton McKenzie says the Proteas are set for big bonuses following their historic victory in the ICC World Test Championship final. The Proteas arrived at OR Tambo International from London to a heroes welcome after defeating Australia by five wickets in the final at Lord's on Saturday. They were accompanied by the ICC Test Mace, the first piece of silverware South Africa's cricket team has won since claiming the 1998 Champions Trophy title. McKenzie greeted the team at the airport and hinted to the media that there will be an announcement about bonuses for the team at a main press conference at Cricket South Africa's headquarters in Johannesburg later today. 'We will talk about that later,' McKenzie said. 'We have got so many winners, all these bonuses can bankrupt the country!' Video Player is loading. The Springboks won back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, while Bafana Bafana won the bronze medal at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and have qualified for the next edition in Morocco, which will be played from December 26. During the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, South Africa won six medals, including gold for star swimmer Tatjana Smith and a silver for the 4x100 men's relay team anchored by Akani Simbine. Recently, Upington-born Rayno Nel won the 2025 World's Strongest Man competition, while Brendali Theron was crowned the World's Strongest Woman in Dubai last month. 'We are the best sports nation in the world, nobody can argue that. We have the best cricket team, the best rugby team and Bafana Bafana have gone 20 games without defeat,' McKenzie said. 'We have the world's strongest man, the world's strongest woman. We have the fastest runners, the best surfers in the world. We are a bunch of winners!' McKenzie heaped praise on Proteas coach Shukri Conrad and captain Temba Bavuma for guiding the Proteas to the title, saying they instilled an unshakable confidence in the team over the last few years leading into the WTC final. 'You know the difference with this team … Shukri Conrad is the best coach in the world, but one thing he did with this team is make them believe,' McKenzie said. 'They don't need motivation. We believed they were going to win. Conrad believed they were going to win and they believed they were going to win. It's the recipe for where we are today. 'They say cometh the hour, cometh the man. Temba Bavuma, he rose at the right time. Temba means hope, and he brought hope to the nation.' McKenzie also hailed the team's diversity, drawing comparisons with the Springboks, who are loved by all people from all walks of life in the country.

Why South Africa were never going to choke in the WTC final
LEGACY South Africa's World Test Championship victory, led by Temba Bavuma and highlighted by key performances from Kagiso Rabada and Aiden Markram, secured their legacy without the burden of a 'chokers' tag. Picture: Glyn Kirk / AFP Image: Glyn Kirk / AFP Led by Temba Bavuma, the Proteas were crowned World Test Championship (WTC) champions against Australia over the weekend, and in this story, I'm going to explain why I never thought for a second that they were going to choke. This Test team, since readmission into international cricket, has been highly successful and has been able to win when it counted most. Think back to a young Graeme Smith leading the side to their Test wins against hosts England in 2003 and beating Australia in a series for the first time on their home turf in 2008/2009. Then, of course, there was the 2012 series in England when their star-studded team featuring names like Smith, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, and Vernon Philander won the ICC Test Mace. That was the equivalent of winning the WTC now, which was officially launched in 2019, around the time the legendary Steyn retired. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ The Resilience of South Africa's Test Cricket Legacy By then, the golden era of the SA team was mostly over. The point here, though, is that the Test side has never been burdened with the chokers tag as they have won plenty of crunch matches and series when it counted most. The limited-overs SA sides, of course, are a different story as ICC tournament glory continues to elude them, and that's why I found it unfair to link the fortunes between the different formats. Even the match broadcaster for the WTC final pointed to the fact that the Proteas had made it to two quarter-finals, 12 semi-finals, and one final without any silverware. Test cricket is the ultimate format of the game, and the majority of top international cricketers will agree with that statement. And the fact that the Proteas have never shied away from that final step in Test cricket has always spoken volumes. There's nowhere to hide in Test cricket, and that's why the true quality of SA cricket has shone through since their readmission to international cricket.

Dale Steyn can't hold back tears, picks his SA cap, then goes quiet after South Africa win WTC: 'Life will go on but…'
It's not easy to describe how much the World Test Championship win would have meant for South Africa, in particular the generations of all-time-great cricketers who had come through the ranks and gone through such long spells of disappointment and heartbreak. To watch Kyle Verreynne crash a shot through covers and confirm that the ICC Test Mace would be going back home to the Rainbow Nation was to ease the pain of decades of hurt, achieving a dream held and not realised by so many. One such man was Dale Steyn, a legendary fast bowler and one of the best of all time, who never quite got close to lifting an ICC trophy. Steyn, on media duties for Star Sports, was overcome by pure emotion in the wake of those winning runs, rendered nearly speechless by what it meant to watch his country finally get over that hurdle. In a video shared by the Star Sports social media handles, Steyn can be seen struggling to form words and fight back tears, before falling silent for an extended period as the realisation of the moment truly dawned on him. 'What do you do, what do you say? It's incredible, I'm sitting at home, I've got my cap here, I'm extremely proud. I mean, what do you do? I'll take my son for a walk and life will carry on,' said the fast bowler, lifting up his Proteas Test cap, before falling silent and welling up with emotion following the moment. It is evident how poignant a moment this is considered in South African cricket history. Steyn wasn't the only South African to feel the brunt of the moment, with Keshav Maharaj also fighting through tears of his own to speak to former captain Graeme Smith about how much it means to the country to get over the line after years of heartbreak, and repeatedly falling short of the ultimate glory. Also Read: Keshav Maharaj sobs uncontrollably; Temba Bavuma covers his face to hide tears At the end, it was Aiden Markram the hero with one of South Africa's most famous Test centuries, assisted by Kagiso Rabada's 9-fer, a man who is considered to be Dale Steyn's successor in South Africa's long list of fast bowling greats.

Bavuma, Markram, Rabada and other South Africans who starred in historic victory over Australia in WTC Final
Temba Bavuma continued his golden run as South Africa Test captain while Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada starred with bat and ball respectively as the Proteas defeated Australia by five wickets to be crowned world Test champions at Lord's on Saturday. read more Pacer Kagiso Rabada holds the ICC Test Mace aloft as he celebrates South Africa's triumph in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's with teammates. Reuters South Africa brought 27 years of heartbreaks across various ICC events to an end on Saturday, defeating Australia by five wickets at Lord's to be crowned the new world Test champions. The Proteas were staring at the prospect of faltering in the final hurdle yet again after getting bowled out for just 138 on Day 2, conceding a 74-run lead to Pat Cummins' men in the process. The Temba Bavuma-led side, however, bounced back in style over the next couple of days as South Africa – labelled 'chokers' for throwing away crunch games in ICC events from winning positions – stood tall and chased down the stiff 282-run target with half of their wickets intact and five sessions yet to be played. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here are five players who played a key role in a victory that many would label the greatest in South African cricketing history: Temba Bavuma Bavuma has been on a roll ever since he succeeded Dean Elgar to become South Africa's first black Test captain in February 2023, with the Proteas having won their last eight Tests on the trot under his leadership, including the WTC Final at the 'Home of Cricket'. Temba Bavuma is yet to lose a match since being appointed South Africa's Test captain in February 2023. Reuters And the 35-year-old, who is yet to lose a Test as captain, led from the front with a gritty 66 during South Africa's chase of the 282-run target set by Australia, braving a hamstring injury to forge a match-winning 147-run stand with Markram. Aiden Markram Markram had been dismissed for a six-ball duck in the first innings after getting cleaned up by Mitchell Starc, and was facing a pair when he walked out to begin South Africa's chase on Day 3. Only this time a determined Markram produced what surely is the finest knock of his career – an innings of 136 spanning more than six hours that contained 14 boundaries. The Proteas were under pressure after Markram's opening partner Ryan Rickelton was dismissed with just 9 on the board, but it was his positive approach at the centre and his crucial partnerships with Wiaan Mulder and skipper Bavuma that not only brought them back into the game but put them in pole position for victory. The 30-year-old was dismissed with South Africa a hit away from victory and was later awarded the Player of the Match for his contribution. Kagiso Rabada Let's not forget the chief architect of South Africa's historic triumph at Lord's from the bowling department – KG Rabada, whose match haul of 9/110 (5/51 and 4/59) ensured Australia struggled to cross 200 in both of their innings. Rabada, who was coming into this game on the back of a doping controversy, made an instant impact after Proteas captain Bavuma opted to field, getting rid of Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green in the same over with a Dukes ball that was six overs old. He grabbed three wickets after tea on the same day as Australia crumbled to 212 all out from 190/5. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The 30-year-old pacer accounted for Khawaja and Green in the same over in the second innings as well, this time in a space of three balls. And it was his twin strike that rekindled South Africa's hopes after they had conceded a 74-run lead, as they would go on to reduce the Aussies to 73/7 before bowling them out for 207. David Bedingham Bedingham had top-scored in the first innings with a patient 45 off 111 deliveries, stitching a 64-run fifth-wicket partnership with skipper Bavuma and helping South Africa reach 121/5 at lunch on Day 2 – before Cummins wreaked havoc with a devastating spell. David Bedingham and Kyle Verreynne celebrate after guiding South Africa to a five-wicket victory over Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord's. AP Two days later, the middle-order batter would chip in with an unbeaten 21, adding 35 for the fifth wicket with Markram just when the Aussies were starting to fight back with a couple of wickets and later guiding the team over the line in the company of Kyle Verreynne, who got the honour of scoring the winning runs. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Lungi Ngidi The South African pace department's red-hot performance on Day 3 was headlined by Rabada but had an equally important supporting role from Ngidi, who collected 3/38. Among Ngidi's victims was Steve Smith, who departed for 13 after collecting 66 in the first innings in what was one of the most crucial moments of the game. And it took a brilliant a review by the South Africans after an unsuccessful LBW appeal for Ngidi to get rid of the premier Australian batter.
