ICESCO Showcases Its Efforts to Empower Youth at 'Youth Knowledge Forum'
Mohamed Mandour The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) participated in the fourth 'Youth Knowledge Forum,' organized in Cairo by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports. In a key working session titled 'Complementarity between governments and international institutions in supporting the knowledge economy,' Dr. Sally Mabrouk, Director of the Office of ICESCO Director-General and Supervisor of the Strategy and Institutional Excellence Sector, reviewed the main programs and initiatives of the Organization aimed at supporting young people in its Member States, particularly in the areas of knowledge, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Mabrouk also reviewed the main thrusts of the 'Youth Knowledge Forum in the Islamic World,' which was recently organized by ICESCO in partnership with MBRF at ICESCO headquarters in Rabat. The Forum saw a large youth interaction and intensive intellectual activity. The ICESCO delegation also included Taqwa Al Ali, in charge of innovation; Fatma El Ghalia Hannani, strategic planning analyst; and Youssef Stelate, application developer in the Digital Transformation Department. The interventions of the delegation members focused on their role in the success of the third edition of the Forum, which was held in Morocco, reviewing their practical experiences and contributions in implementing innovative knowledge empowerment programs for young participants. ICESCO's participation in this major regional event reflects its strategic commitment to empowering youth and promoting the knowledge economy in Member States, as part of its vision to create interactive platforms for the younger generation to participate in decision-making and the achievement of sustainable development. It is also part of the Organization's efforts to strengthen partnerships with regional and international institutions concerned with youth and innovation issues. ICESCO Holds Event on List of World Heritage in Danger
Mohamed Mandour The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) organized a side event on the sidelines of the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, to showcase its efforts to support the removal of Member States' properties from the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger and promote international cooperation in this field. Titled 'ICESCO Strategy for Supporting the Removal of Properties from the List of World Heritage in Danger within Member States,' the event was organized in partnership with several distinguished partners and was moderated by Somia Djacta, Head of ICESCO's Office to UNESCO. Dr. Mohamed Zinelabidine, Head of the Culture Sector at ICESCO, opened the event with a statement of appreciation to the host organizations and underscored ICESCO's recent accomplishments in assisting Member States in the removal of their sites from the List of World Heritage in Danger. ICESCO Concludes Workshop on Protection of Cultural Property
Mohamed Mandour At the headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) in Rabat, the regional workshop on 'The Role of Customs Authorities in Combating Illicit Trafficking in Cultural Property' concluded its proceedings. The workshop was organized by ICESCO, in cooperation with the Qatar National Library, the General Customs Authority of the State of Qatar, and the Customs and Indirect Taxes Directorate of the Kingdom of Morocco. The workshop concluded with a working session to present the 'White Paper' methodology, which aims to strengthen coordination between customs authorities, build effective partnerships to combat cultural property smuggling networks, develop shared databases, and improve mechanisms for documenting and storing confiscated cultural property, thus contributing to enhancing customs efficiency and regional and international cooperation. In the closing session, Mohamed Hedi Shili, Director of Legal Affairs and International Standards at ICESCO, presented the final recommendations and outcomes of the workshop, which called for strengthening cooperation and integration between customs authorities, law enforcement agencies, museums, and cultural organizations in the Islamic world in order to protect cultural heritage from illicit trafficking. Morocco Has Taken Bold Steps Against Illicit Trade of Cultural Goods
Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has undertaken bold measures to combat the illicit trade of cultural goods, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid said on Monday in Rabat. Speaking at the opening of an international conference on 'the role of customs in the fight against the illicit trade of cultural goods', Bensaid said that Morocco is committed to cultural heritage and values cultural goods, pointing out that these goods 'are not mere artifacts or works of art, but are living testimonies of successive civilizations, a collective memory of Humanity and priceless treasures that reflect human creativity and civilizational interaction over centuries'. The minister also pointed out that international criminal networks exploit conflicts and crises, while taking advantage of legal and technological loopholes to smuggle these goods out of their countries of origin. 'We have strived to strengthen our legal and judicial framework, in line with the relevant international conventions, notably the 1970 UNESCO Convention', he said, noting that the ministry has also stepped up efforts in the fields of digitization and cultural property inventory, the first line of defense against theft and smuggling. He added that the new law had come into force with new and important provisions aimed at limiting all harmful practices that threaten cultural heritage. Held from June 30 to July 5 by ICESCO in collaboration with the Qatar General Customs Authority and the Qatar National Library, this international conference will feature several activities, including three meetings and a regional workshop during which two specialized training courses will be given: 'Essential skills for the protection of cultural property' and 'Tools and technologies used by customs for the protection of cultural property'. QNL leads regional efforts to combat illicit trafficking of cultural property
Tribune News Network Doha As part of its ongoing commitment to preserving heritage, Qatar National Library (QNL), the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)'s Regional Preservation and Conservation Centre for the Arab region, continues to champion efforts to prevent the illicit trade of cultural property across the region. In collaboration with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), Qatar's General Authority of Customs, and Morocco's Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes, Qatar National Library (QNL) is co-organizing the International Conference and High-Level Regional Workshop on the Role of Customs Authorities in Combating the Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property. The event, which began on 30 June and will continue until 5 July, is being held at ICESCO Headquarters in Rabat, Morocco. The initiative consists of an international conference on the opening day, followed by a comprehensive five-day regional workshop that brings together customs officials, cultural heritage professionals, and law enforcement representatives from across the region, focusing on enhancing customs officers' capacity to identify and safeguard cultural property, apply international legal frameworks, and collaborate effectively with cultural and enforcement institutions. The opening ceremony featured remarks from distinguished officials including Minister of Justice, Kingdom of Morocco, Abdellatif Ouahbi; Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Kingdom of Morocco, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid; Executive Director of Qatar National Library, Tan Huism; Director-General of ICESCO, Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al-Malik; Assistant Chairman for Customs Affairs at Qatar's General Authority of Customs Talal Abdullah Al Shaibi and senior officials Morocco's Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes. Tan Huism discussed the gravity of the increased threats to cultural heritage, and the importance of customs authorities in combating illicit trafficking, but also the role of the media and society. She discussed the efforts that Qatar National Library has made in this area, and the importance of working in partnership. She continued: 'Cultural items are expressions of who we are as a society. They hold our collective memory, reflect our identity, and offer insight into our values and beliefs. By working hand in hand with regional and international partners, we remain committed to preventing the trafficking of cultural property and ensuring they are preserved for future generations,' she said. Talal Al Shaibi emphasized the importance of collaboration with organizations like QNL and ICESCO in strengthening the ability of customs authorities to protect cultural heritage across borders. 'Customs authorities are often the first line of defence against the illegal movement of cultural assets. Thus, they play a crucial and leading role in combatting the illicit trade,' he said. Dr. Al Malik noted that the workshop represents a key milestone in building bridges between cultural institutions and customs authorities throughout the Islamic world, reinforcing ICESCO's mission to advance cultural heritage protection. The event marked a significant step forward in strengthening regional cooperation to combat crimes against cultural property and further solidified QNL's leadership in heritage preservation. QNL's efforts are aligned with Qatar's broader vision to safeguard cultural identity. As IFLA's Regional Preservation and Conservation Centre for the region, QNL plays a pivotal role in fostering regional collaboration, providing training and support for the protection of heritage.
