Spring Valley high school student detained by ICE after immigration hearing, dad says
Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says Spring Valley high schooler has been in ICE detention for weeks, father says A high school student from Spring Valley is heading into his fifth week in an ICE detention center. Adam Pierre was leaving an immigration hearing in Lower Manhattan on June 4 when, his father and attorney say, he was surrounded by masked federal agents, handcuffed and taken away. His father, Dutan Pierre, was waiting for Adam outside. After five hours, he says he got a call that his son was not coming home. "He followed the lawful pathways" Pierre is a native of Haiti and a United States citizen. He sponsored his son, expecting fast approval because of his own status and the fact Adam is under the age 21. Pierre says Adam says no criminal history and is a good student who plays basketball and football. Vince Sykes, the family's attorney, says Adam entered the country legally. "He followed the lawful pathways," he said. "He went to his immigration court appearance. That's where it happened. That's where he was picked up." Sykes added, "[Adam] said the very first week, all he had was bread and water. That's all they gave them. He said that's since changed." Rev. Jean Claude Dorcelly says fear is palpable in Spring Valley, with some people in hiding, avoiding doctors, workplaces, schools and more. "They're scared to come to church," he said. Student missed finals, summer school deadline Sykes says his client is terrified. "I know it's very hard on him. I know this kid is going to be traumatized," he said. Adam's high school education is now stalled. He missed all his finals, and he was unable to meet a deadline to try to catch up in summer school. "If we had gotten him out, say, last week or whatever, he would have joined up on the summer school program," Sykes said. "I'm very bad ... I cannot sleep," Pierre said. "Give me my son back." Friday morning, CBS News New York emailed an ICE chief about the status of this case and requested an update from the Department of Homeland Security. Neither has responded at this time. Adam is one of several local students who have been taken into ICE custody. In early June, ICE agents detained an 11th grader from Queens outside a local courthouse during a scheduled immigration appointment, and in late May, a Bronx high school student was taken into custody following an immigration hearing.

Newlywed Palestinian woman released from ICE custody after months in detention
Ward Sakeik -- a stateless Palestinian woman who was detained on her way back from her honeymoon -- has been released from ICE detention nearly five months after her arrest, her husband confirmed to ABC News. Sakeik, who is married to a U.S. citizen, was arrested at the St. Thomas Airport in the U.S. Virgin Islands in February. "The Trump administration's brazenly unconstitutional attempt to deport this young woman in violation of a federal court order should shock the conscience of every American. Had we not intervened, she may very well be in a foreign country right now, separated from her family like so many others illegally deported to third countries," Eric Lee, Sakeik's attorney, said in a statement Wednesday. MORE: Newlywed bride's honeymoon ends with months of ICE detention and the prospect of deportation The government had attempted to deport Sakeik twice -- the first of which was to Israel just hours before it launched its attack on Iran in June. The second attempt to deport her was made despite a federal judge ordering that she remain in the northern district of Texas and not be removed from the U.S. Sakeik's family is from Gaza, but she is legally stateless and has lived in the U.S. since she was 8 years old. Her family had traveled to the U.S. on a tourist visa and applied for asylum, according to Shaikh. MORE: Government attempts to deport stateless Palestinian woman again despite court order Sakeik was issued a deportation order more than a decade ago after her asylum case was denied, but she was permitted to stay in the U.S. under what's known as an "order of supervision," in which she was given a work permit and regularly checks in with federal immigration authorities, according to her attorney and her husband. The first stage of her Green Card application was approved last week, according to her husband, Taahir Shaikh. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Video: Trump shows off alligator-dodging skills as he tours new 'Alligator Alcatraz' ICE detention facility
Alligator Alcatraz, the controversial new ICE detention center in Florida, is now open. President Trump toured the site on Tuesday with Kristi Noem. The controversial detention facility was spearheaded by state Republican leaders and garnered its nickname due to its location: it sits about 37 miles from Miami in the middle of a swamp surrounded by snakes and alligators - and in an area of the state that is prone to hurricanes. Democrats railed against the facility and environmental groups have sued to try and stop its opening. The $450 million-per-year detention facility, which will be able to hold up to 3,000 undocumented immigrants, was built in just seven days. There are only tents and trailers - no brick-or-mortar buildings. It was constructed on land belonging to Miami-Dade County and seized by state officials over local leaders' objections. It sits next to an 11,000 foot airstrip. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the runway is to quickly fly immigrants out of America.
