Should You Invest in the iShares U.S. Utilities ETF (IDU)?
Looking for broad exposure to the Utilities - Broad segment of the equity market? You should consider the iShares U.S. Utilities ETF (IDU), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 06/12/2000. An increasingly popular option among retail and institutional investors, passively managed ETFs offer low costs, transparency, flexibility, and tax efficiency; they are also excellent vehicles for long term investors. Sector ETFs also provide investors access to a broad group of companies in particular sectors that offer low risk and diversified exposure. Utilities - Broad is one of the 16 broad Zacks sectors within the Zacks Industry classification. It is currently ranked 1, placing it in top 6%. The fund is sponsored by Blackrock. It has amassed assets over $1.38 billion, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the performance of the Utilities - Broad segment of the equity market. IDU seeks to match the performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Utilities Index before fees and expenses. The Russell 1000 Utilities RIC 22.5/45 Capped Index measures the performance of the utilities sector of the U.S. equity market. It includes companies in the following sectors: electricity and gas, water and multi-utilities. Cost is an important factor in selecting the right ETF, and cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive counterparts if all other fundamentals are the same. Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.39%, making it one of the cheaper products in the space. It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 2.35%. Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure that minimizes single stock risk, investors should also look at the actual holdings inside the fund. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis. This ETF has heaviest allocation in the Utilities sector--about 89.20% of the portfolio, followed by Industrials. Looking at individual holdings, Nextera Energy Inc (NEE) accounts for about 10.40% of total assets, followed by Southern (SO) and Waste Management Inc (WM). The top 10 holdings account for about 54.05% of total assets under management. The ETF has added roughly 10.14% and it's up approximately 21.68% so far this year and in the past one year (as of 07/08/2025), respectively. IDU has traded between $88.51 and $106.11 during this last 52-week period. The ETF has a beta of 0.58 and standard deviation of 16.94% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 47 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers. IShares U.S. Utilities ETF holds a Zacks ETF Rank of 2 (Buy), which is based on expected asset class return, expense ratio, and momentum, among other factors. YMA, MSACS to combat HIV & drug addiction
Aizawl: The central committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the largest community-based organisation among the Mizos, and the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) have agreed to work closely together in combating the spread of HIV and addressing drug addiction. In a 'consultative deliberation' held at the central YMA hall in Aizawl on Friday, MSACS project director Jane R Ralte said 32,544 people have been infected since Oct 1990 till March end this year, while the number of HIV infected people during the 2024-2025 financial year (April 2024 to March 2025) was 2,021. Ralte said 1,302 infected people (68.13% of 2,021) during the last fiscal contracted the disease through unsafe sex of which the large majority are having permanent partners (wives or husbands or lovers), followed by those having casual sex partners. "There is also an increase in infections among males who have male partners," she said. Among those infected during the last financial year, 83.47% are between the age group of 15 and 49 years, making the use of condoms during sex more important, she said. She appealed to the YMA to educate youths to carry condoms wherever they go. Tanzania arrests opposition official travelling to political conference
May 13 (Reuters) - Tanzanian authorities arrested a senior opposition official as he was departing for a political conference in Belgium, his party said on Tuesday, as fears grow of an escalating crackdown ahead of an October election. While President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who plans to seek reelection, says the government is committed to respecting human rights, a recent string of high-profile arrests has thrust her record into the spotlight. Amani Golugwa, a senior member of Tanzania's main opposition CHADEMA party, was arrested at Julius Nyerere International Airport in the capital Dar es Salaam on Monday, his party wrote on X. Tanzanian police confirmed his arrest in a post on their Instagram account, writing that Golugwa "has a trend of leaving and returning to the country without following legal procedures." "Dar es Salaam police special zone is continuing with the investigation on the matter in collaboration with other security organs," the post added. A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Golugwa had been due to represent his party in Brussels at a forum organised by the International Democracy Union, a grouping of centre-right parties that CHADEMA belongs to and which also counts the British Conservatives and U.S. Republicans as members. "The IDU strongly condemns the unlawful arrest and assault of CHADEMA's (Golugwa)," the organisation posted on X. "Silencing opposition voices violates the core of democracy. We call for his immediate release." Police arrested Tundu Lissu, CHADEMA's leader and Tanzania's main opposition figure, last month. Lissu, who was shot 16 times in a 2017 attack and came second in the last presidential poll, was subsequently charged with treason over what prosecutors said was a speech calling upon the public to rebel and disrupt the elections. He had held several rallies in early April under the slogan "No Reforms, No Election", where CHADEMA demanded significant changes to an electoral process they say favours the ruling party. Days after Lissu's arrest, the election commission disqualified CHADEMA from participating in the polls over its refusal to sign a code of conduct.
