Untrained recruits deployed for Muharram security

Newly recruited youth in the police force from various districts have been sent to perform security duties in Jamshoro for Muharram without receiving any formal training. According to reports, police department has not made arrangements to provide the mandatory meals to these recruits on duty for the past five days. The young men are buying food and water from their own pockets or dependent on the charity meals of nazar and nayaz of Muharram majalis. In a viral video, the recruits expressed their distress, saying, "we have been deployed for Muharram procession security, but we have not received any training yet. Despite being on duty, we are not being provided meals or allowances. We are facing extreme hardship." When approached, the SHO of Jamshoro reportedly said, "if I get anything, I will give you something." In their message, they have appealed to the IG Sindh, DIG Hyderabad, and other senior authorities to take notice of their condition. Due to a shortage of police personnel in the Jamshoro district and surrounding areas, the recently recruited, untrained officers have been assigned Muharram security duties. Many of them have been sent from districts such as Naushahro Feroze.

New SOP for appointment, transfer of SHOs

In a move to enhance transparency and professionalism within the Sindh Police Department, IG Ghulam Nabi Memon has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) governing the appointment and transfer of SHOs across the province. The revised policy mandates that only officers who have successfully completed the Upper School Course will be eligible for SHO postings, while those facing corruption charges or serious criminal cases will be automatically disqualified. As per the new SOP, the power to appoint SHOs has been delegated to the respective district's SSP. A committee comprising the Range DIG and the SSP will oversee the process to ensure fairness and accountability. Similarly, each appointed SHO will serve a minimum term of one year, barring exceptional circumstances such as misconduct, poor performance, or physical incapacity. Moreover, officers will not be posted as SHOs in their home districts without prior approval from the IG Sindh. No officer can be reposted to the same police station within three years of their previous assignment there. SHOs may only be transferred before completing their tenure in cases of corruption, inefficiency, or prolonged official inquiries exceeding 30 days. Officers removed under such conditions will be ineligible for SHO reappointment for at least one year. Outgoing SHOs must formally transfer all official records and property to their successors, ensuring a smooth transition. The police training branch and establishment wing have been instructed to conduct regular professional development courses to enhance officers' skills. Immediate implementation Immediately across all districts and zones of Sindh. The notification also clarifies that no officer can use this policy to demand preferential postings at specific police stations. This reform is part of IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon's broader efforts to institutionalise meritocracy and curb malpractices within the Police Department. The move has been welcomed by law enforcement experts, who see it as a step toward restoring public trust in the force.

PARTLY FACETIOUS: IG Sindh says Malir jail houses mainly drug users and…

'What's the difference between judicious and judiciary?' 'Hey, there is no relationship between the two words that I know of. And if this is your way of referring to the Monday statements by the Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless on the outcome of the twenty-sixth constitutional amendment…' 'The guy has little access to news and visitors are limited to an hour or so per week, so sometimes he blows hot, and sometimes he blows cold. I guess on Monday, he blew hot.' 'Oh, so you reckon he was injudicious while commenting on several subjects on Monday, but this may change when next he interacts with the world?' 'He also claimed that an interview was sought with the Third Wife, and she refused.' 'And like other wives, she tells no tales, right?' 'Maybe that has been his experience – his two previous wives perhaps told no tales.' 'Hmmmm.' 'Anyway, for your information, spiritual guides, pirs, never lie.' 'But wives…' 'Shut up, as there has been no survey done on the subject matter, the subject matter being whether pirnis as wives sometimes twist facts and…' 'Gotcha, anyway, can you confirm if The Man Who Must Remain Nameless and Faceless has requested to be transferred to Malir jail.' 'Don't be facetious.' 'By the way, have they caught all the 200 plus who escaped from Malir jail?' 'The IG Sindh visited the jail and said that Malir jail houses mainly drug users and…' 'I thought drug use was prevalent in all jails – local and foreign.' 'No, one told him about that survey. Besides the IG seemed to imply that all those not yet caught, I heard 50 plus, will be caught soon and…' 'Will any heads roll?' 'No I think one of the conditions for the GSP plus status given by the European Union requires us to ban capital punishment.' 'But the US has capital punishment, and the EU does do what the US wants it to do.' 'Different strokes for different folks.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
