Former Thunder forward Isaiah Roby grew up with OKC, now he's watching NBA Finals in awe

Advertisement The sound of Black Eyed Peas' 'I Gotta Feeling' rang throughout the arena as the former Thunder forward watched OKC inch closer to its first NBA title. The moment was nostalgic, transporting the 27-year-old back to his early NBA days as a promising forward on a young and rebuilding Thunder team. Roby, who now plays for Ratiopharm Ulm of the Basketball Bundesliga in Germany, spent three seasons with the Thunder after being traded to OKC from Dallas as a rookie. Though his on-court minutes were limited during the dark days of OKC, the relationships he formed have lasted far beyond his time on the roster. Roby remains close with several of his former teammates — notably Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort and Kenrich Williams — the only remaining Thunder players from his time in Oklahoma City. Here's all Roby had to say about his time in OKC and what it means to watch the Thunder thrive in the playoffs in an exclusive interview with The Oklahoman. Advertisement Mussatto: How an NBA title would solidify legacies of OKC Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Q: How does it feel to be back where you spent the majority of your NBA career, especially in this Finals atmosphere? A: 'Being here is crazy. I got here during the COVID season, so I like to see it over capacity in Paycom. These are my first NBA finals games, so just the whole experience was amazing. Growing up, I didn't get to go to any NBA games. I didn't get to go to an NBA game until I was in the NBA. So this is a dream come true for me. Being able to see familiar faces and all the people that helped me when I was here was beautiful.' Q: What has it been like to see one of your good friends in SGA become the MVP and one of the faces of the league since your time here? A: 'Man, it's insane. ... I got traded midway through my rookie season, and I remember when I first got here that I knew of him, but like, I never saw his game up close. ... It was like nobody could stop him. You could see his ability to get to the rim. And I think he just evolved his game since then and now he's one of, if not the league's best player." Q: So seeing Shai become one of the top players hasn't been a surprise to you? A: 'Not really. Only because even back then in every gym he went to, it was like nobody could guard him. It didn't matter who was on him — he was always still going to get to his spots and get his. So it's not surprising to me. I've never seen anybody that can stay in front of him one-on-one, and now he's got the stepback and his entire game has just been unlocked.' Q: What do you cherish most about your time in OKC? A: "The people, for sure. I like seeing how the arena staff are a lot of the same people that were here when I was here. The security, the ushers — even the ball boys. Coming from where I come from, I was taught to just stay humble and not think too highly of yourself. The people here treated me well when I first got here, and they treat me well now, too. That's definitely the biggest thing for me is the people.' Q: Are you traveling to Indiana for Game 6? A: 'Nah. But if the series went seven, I might. I think they're gonna get it in six, but a Game 7 in this building would be crazy. I don't know if I could miss that.' Q: So then I'd assume you'd come to the championship parade if they win? A: 'Now that I'd be there for. For sure. It's all love for OKC. Always has been and it always will be. A lot of these guys I played with, like I was teammates with (Isaiah) Hartenstein in New York for a little bit. I'm happy for these guys. They've got a good group of guys. And you know Sam (Presti) is a master when it comes to putting teams together.' Q: What has this pro basketball journey been like for you? I know you're playing in Germany now, but what has been your biggest takeaway from going from the NBA to overseas? A: 'For me, when I was in high school and in college, I thought you had to be 27-28 to last toward the end of your career. But the drive that I have and the love that I have for basketball and seeing all different levels — NBA, G League, Europe — like I've seen guys at 34 years old busting their ass every day, working hard to keep playing. It gave me a new motivation, honestly. I see myself playing this game for a lot more years. I don't know what's going to come from that, but I'm a big believer in myself.' Q: Lastly, what do you think was the biggest lesson that you learned in your time in Oklahoma City that you've embraced since you left? A: 'Being here showed me that I'm able to be very versatile. Like when I was here, I played a bunch of different positions and I had a bunch of different responsibilities. I went through every role with the Thunder, from not playing to making an impact off the bench to starting. And the fact that I played with a lot of these guys who were in a similar position and now look at them — they're the best team in the world. Like I saw them putting in the work, so it puts confidence into me that I can play this game at the highest level. I'm just excited to continue to prove that and get back out there.' The pop-rap group behind a string of major hits in the '00s has announced plans to headline the Grand Casino Hinckley Amphitheater on Sept. 4. The "I Gotta Feeling" pop radio mainstays, who have performed without Fergie since she departed in 2018, will be making their first appearance in Minnesota since the 2021 Jingle Ball at Xcel Energy Center, which also featured Pitbull, Lil Nas X, Saweetie, and Tate McRae. Prior to that, they'd last headlined a Twin Cities show back in 2010 during the E.N.D. World Tour, which stopped at Xcel Energy Center with Ludacris and LMFAO in tow. The quartet, which now includes Apple de Ap, Taboo, and J. Rey Soul, was scheduled for a Las Vegas residency this year. However, that run of shows — which was to feature a new A.I. "presence" named Vida — was canceled due to "current circumstances," which were not detailed. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13. Check out a gallery of songs that found success during the last recession. Recession pop is a reminder that even when the world feels heavy, sometimes all you want to do is dance. Coined during the late 2000s, recession pop describes a wave of upbeat, escapist pop music that soared to popularity amidst global financial turmoil. What is 'recession pop' — and why is it making a comeback? New music from Kesha, Lady Gaga signals return to 'escapist pop bangers.'
The year is 2008, and the Great Recession has settled in. With the bursting of the housing bubble, the collapse of major investment banks like Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns, as well as the rise in unemployment and poverty rates, economic turmoil is at a high. As the economy cratered, pop music thrived. Recession woes coincided with the release of infectious dance-pop tracks that topped charts and dominated radio stations. Katy Perry's 2010 album, Teenage Dream, is one example of what Joe Bennett, a forensic musicologist at Berklee College of Music, refers to as the 'quintessential recession pop sound.' Notable party records of the time, per Bennett, also include Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance,' Kesha's 'Tik Tok,' the Black Eyed Peas' 'I Gotta Feeling' and Miley Cyrus's 'Party in the U.S.A.' Now, this sound is making a comeback. ''Recession pop' is a relatively recent label that people have been using in the 2020s to refer to escapist pop bangers that came out between 2009 and 2012,' Bennett told Yahoo Entertainment. 'That coincided with the credit crunch that led to the Great Recession of 2009 and beyond.' 'These songs are very explicitly about dancing, they're about partying,' Paula Harper, a musicologist at the University of Chicago, told Yahoo. 'This music is kind of an overcompensating counterpoint to [the recession]. 'What are we going to do? Well, we can't solve this, but we can get on the dance floor and put our hands up. We can scream along with these incredibly catchy songs.'' The stars of recession pop are also making new music with hallmarks of their late aughts-early 2010s sound. Kesha and Lady Gaga are among the artists with new singles that fans believe call back to their recession pop roots. For Kesha, 'Yippee-Ki-Yay,' her new single featuring T-Pain released on March 27, represents a return to form. Her emergence in the music industry coincided with the Great Recession, and her debut studio album, Animal, exuded this unkempt party girl energy. It all felt apt for the moment. 'It's almost like she's come full circle now,' Bennett said. 'It's sort of understandable that she's going to be tapping into [this] cultural trend. She was there at the start.' Her newest album, Mayhem, which features the single 'Abracadabra,' has been described as recalling distinct dance-pop qualities of her debut album, The Fame, which was released in 2008. Or does it just correlate with the timing of the recession? Maybe it doesn't really matter,' Bennett said. 'Because I think we can all say with some certainty that there were some great pop bangers around in 2010. It was a very cheerful time in popular music.' There's an escapist quality to these hits. Their subject matter is more concerned with what Harper calls the 'phenomenon of the dance floor,' the inclination to lose yourself to dance and 'sonic bodily pleasure.' In 'Party in the U.S.A.,' Cyrus recalls how hearing a Jay-Z song when she's homesick in Los Angeles puts her at ease by encouraging her to dance, as she sings, 'So I put my hands up/ They're playin' my song, the butterflies fly away/ I'm noddin' my head like, yeah/ Movin' my hips like, yeah.' Gaga, on her debut single 'Just Dance,' sings about how everything's going to be OK if she just dances her heart out at the club: 'What's goin' on, on the floor?/ I love this record, baby, but I can't see straight anymore' and 'Just dance/ Gonna be OK, da-da-doo-doot!' driving this point home. Perry's 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' shares a similar sentiment: Partying is fun! The song is an attempted recollection of the events from a given Friday night, as she sings of maxing out credit cards and getting kicked out of bars. Lyrics like 'Yeah, we danced on tabletops, and we took too many shots/ Think we kissed, but I forgot last Friday night' and 'Always say we're gonna stop-op, oh-whoa/ But this Friday night/ Do it all again' speak to this dedication to keeping the party going and the body moving. 'We can say, with certainty, that these dance floor bangers were very big hits in these postrecession years,' added Bennett. 'We can reasonably make the inference that at least a significant proportion of the population [is] not being put off going out dancing by the global economic circumstances.' The term itself is somewhat of a 're-historicizing' of music in an era of streaming, Harper said. Recession pop, as a term, is more of a 'genre marker' than a hard-set genre of music. Many of these albums categorized as recession pop were likely works in progress before the Great Recession happened. 'It's not like Lady Gaga put together her album [The Fame] with the recession in mind,' she said. 'I think there's almost a way in which people now are doing a kind of re-historicizing of those albums [and] that kind of era and moment in music as a way of thinking about and coping with the current moment.' With the escalation of trade tensions, recession fears are continuing to rise in the U.S., CNBC reported. Recession indicators, the outlet notes, include higher unemployment rates, prolonged stock market slumps, more businesses declaring bankruptcy and a decline in consumer spending. So if you think about any music or movie or anything that you liked 15 years ago, you probably think, 'Yeah, that's pretty cool,' as your younger self was enjoying it,' he said. 'I think we all have our version of that story, where you've sort of forgotten how good those bangers were. And the 15-year nostalgia cycle is about the right length of time to allow that forgetting and rediscovery.' Harper hopes the genre label's sudden virality spotlights a new generation of dance-pop artists. She also sees dance-pop bangers taking on more nihilistic themes or undertones. 'I would love to see the kind of rise and more mainstreaming of lesser-known artists or new emergent artists who are able to lasso the moment for recession pop,' she said. 'I would expect to see, I think, a little bit more of just a nihilistic bend. It's not just a kind of like, 'I'm having fun and I don't care,' but 'The world is ending and I can't care.''
