Christine Allado takes on Whitney Houston's role in PH staging of ‘The Bodyguard: The Musical'

Manila is about to witness a dazzling homecoming. Christine Allado, the internationally acclaimed Filipina performer who made her mark in London's West End and global concert halls, is set to return to the Philippine stage as Rachel Marron in 9 Works Theatrical's staging of 'The Bodyguard: The Musical'—a bold, music-packed reimagining of the 1992 film of the same name that catapulted Whitney Houston into cinematic legend. Set to the timeless hits 'I Will Always Love You,' 'I Have Nothing,' and 'Run to You,' The Bodyguard: The Musical' tells the gripping story of a superstar under threat and the unlikely romance that unfolds between her and her bodyguard. The production is set to open on September 26 at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati City. It marks the first-ever theatrical venture of the property group, signaling its entry into the world of performing arts. Allado has long carried the Filipino flag across world stages, having played Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in 'Hamilton's' original West End cast to headlining 'In The Heights' and 'The Prince of Egypt,' which earned her a nomination at the Grammy Awards. Now, she will bring the same world-class presence home, ready to channel the strength, vulnerability, and vocal firepower that the role of Rachel Marron demands. 'It's a full-circle moment. To bring this kind of production to Manila and portray a role made iconic by Whitney Houston, in front of my kababayans, is deeply meaningful," she said. No stranger to the Philippines, Allado, the daughter of lawyer Jojo Allado and Letty Guevara, was born and raised in Manila. She had studied theater at the University of the Philippines and undergone workshops with Trumpets Playshop where she acted in 'Hairspray,' 'Phantom of the Opera,' and the longest running Filipino musical, 'Joseph The Dreamer,' Like many actors looking for greener pastures, she moved to Hong Kong to work at Hong Kong Disneyland, then migrated to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music, where she earned her Masters in musical theater in 2013. Allado has since performed in sold-out concerts with Andrea Bocelli across Europe and Asia, to co-starring with Lea Salonga and Bernadette Peters in the West End run of 'Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends,' among many others. She currently stars as Meat in West End's production of 'We Will Rock You.' This year, she's also set to lead the West End premiere of 'Jo: Little Women The Musical.' On Instagram Friday, 9 Works Theatrical posted a video of Allado singing 'I Will Always Love You,' one of Houston's signature songs used in the film and the musical. However, as early as February, Allado had posted on Instagram a video of her singing 'I Have Nothing,' in what she dubbed a rehearsal for a concert in Mexico. The song is among Houston's top hits that was also used in the film and musical. A long time coming In an interview with GMA News Online, 'The Bodyguard: The Musical' director Robbie Guevara shared they got the rights for the musical as early as 2019 for 9 Works Theatrical's 2020 season. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, put everything on hold. Santi Santamaria, managing director and executive producer of 9 Works Theatrical, added, '[It's] a long time coming, this show.' In the past, 9 Works Theatrical has staged other award-winning musicals, including "Grease," "La Cage aux Folles," and "Tick, Tick... Boom!." In 2024, the company staged "Rent," and "Once on This Island," followed by "Liwanag sa Dilim" earlier this year. According to Guevara, he first saw "The Bodyguard" musical in one of its West End runs after it premiered at Adelphi Theater in London in December 2012, while he saw the film version in a movie house in 1992. He added that his favorite song from the film and musical is Houston's 'I Have Nothing.' 'I love all of Whitney's popular songs, so I enjoyed it. I wasn't a huge fan, but I didn't dislike [the film] naman,' he shared. He also mentioned there are no more auditions for the musical's other roles, 'All done na.' As for the actor who would play Frank Farmer in the local production (Kevin Costner played him in the film), Guevara remained tight-lipped, noting that it will be revealed soon. Aside from Guevara, 'The Bodyguard: The Musical' creative team is composed of Arnold Trinidad as choreographer, Mio Infante as scenographer, Daniel Bartolome as musical director, and Shakira Villa-Symes as lighting designer. 'The usual team,' he said, whose recent directorial job was the original Filipino musical 'Liwanag Sa Dilim.' For now, theater fans can look forward to seeing Allado in the landmark musical featuring Houston's other hits like 'One Moment In Time,' 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody,' 'I'm Every Woman,' 'Run to You,' 'How Will I Know,' 'Queen of the Night,' 'Saving All My Love for You,' and 'Greatest Love of All.' With tickets now available at theater fans and music lovers alike have the rare chance to witness a global star shine on home soil in a show packed with drama, danger, and unforgettable music. —CDC, GMA Integrated News

Helen Flanagan's dig to ex Scott Sinclair that he's 'getting nothing' for Father's Day

Coronation Street actress Helen, 34, shares kids Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and four-year-old son Charlie with the former Celtic star. Helen Flanagan has made a subtle swipe at her ex, former Celtic stat Scott Sinclair, in her latest social media post. The single mum-of-three shares kids Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and four-year-old son Charlie with her former partner. The Corrie star, 34, took to her Instagram page where she shared a humorous meme of Whitney Houston belting out one of her hit singles I Have Nothing, in which the clip selected her rifting the word in the song 'nothing'. ‌ The meme was captioned alongside the audio of, "What are you getting your baby daddy for father's day?," to which Helen had shared the post on her own page alongside a string of laughing emojis. ‌ Elsewhere, the actress has been promoting her new underwear collection. She was delighted to share the news and racy snaps with her followers, which comes just recently after her split with Robbie Talbot. The pair began dating during Helen's stint on Celebs Go Dating, where she was nearly axed from the agency for appearing on the programme despite being romantically involved with Robbie. Helen and Robbie dated briefly following Celebs Go Dating. She is believed to have been keen to have kids with dad-of-two Robbie, with insiders reporting the pair had a "grown-up" conversation when realising their relationship was not progressing. Helen is said to have found it difficult balancing being a full-time mum alongside both her career and relationship expectations. Adding further stress, the actress recently placed her 'forever home' on the market amid rumours of financial pressures. The former I'm A Celebrity star has candidly opened up previously about her struggles with both finances and her mental health. She confessed there was a point where she was left without any money. ‌ Helen previously resided in the eight-bedroom property located in Bolton, Greater Manchester, along with her former partner Scott, 36, and their children, before separating in 2022. In a heartfelt Instagram post in January, she divulged: "My love life was a s**t show.... I didn't look after my mental health. I felt so s**t and sad. I felt like my whole life was f***ed up now and I had the perfect family. 13 years is a long time to be with someone. My whole 20s. I had a lot of family fall-outs too and I also lost basically all my money. Me and Scott weren't married we were engaged. ‌ "My mental health was so bad I thought maybe my kids would be better off without me and maybe they would be better off with their dad as he's more level-headed than me. I love my kids more than words can say, but when you are not well you're not well." Meanwhile, Helen has been busy soaking up the sun in Ibiza as she shared a weekend recap of topping up her tan during a gifted stay. She gushed over the "stunning ocean views" in her luxury apartment, which featured a bath overlooking the Island.

EXCLUSIVE The Bootyguard! Kim Kardashian is hot favourite to take Whitney's role in Bodyguard remake - in huge shock to army of Swifties convinced that Taylor would get it

From the moment it was announced that 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard was being remade there has only been one name in the frame to play the lead actress: Taylor Swift. But producers have secretly been speaking to another – very different – global superstar for months… Kim Kardashian. In what might come as something of a shock to Swifties everywhere, The Mail on Sunday has learned the script has been 'specifically tailored' to Ms Kardashian, who is anxious to make her big-screen debut as a leading lady. An impeccable source said last night: 'Everyone immediately assumed Taylor would get the lead, the role played by Whitney Houston in the original film, because The Bodyguard remake is being directed by Sam Wrench who directed the 2023 film about Taylor's Eras Tour. But Warner Bros, the studio remaking the original, is very keen on Kim. 'There have already been multiple meetings and the script has been written with Kim in mind.' The original movie starred Whitney Houston as singer Rachel Marron who is stalked by a deranged fan and co-starred Kevin Costner as her devoted bodyguard Frank Farmer. The original film was nominated for two Oscars and the soundtrack became the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time with hits including I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing and Run To You The movie was nominated for two Oscars and the soundtrack became the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time with hits including I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing and Run To You. The film took over $400 million at the box office with the soundtrack selling more than 50 million copies worldwide, winning the Grammy for Album of the Year. The source said: 'Everyone is assuming the remake will be a musical but there has been talk of making a sequel for years and most of the talk has been about taking it in a different direction, using a global celebrity but not necessarily having it as a musical, more a straightforward drama. 'Let's face it, how can you top Whitney?' Previous discussions of a remake involved Kevin Costner and the late Princess Diana. Costner, who may make a cameo appearance in the new film, revealed it was Sarah, Duchess of York, who put him in touch with Diana in the 1990s. The script starring the princess was handed in to the studio one day before she died in 1997. Ms Kardashian has long been known to want to break into 'serious' acting. The reality star has appeared in films like Disaster Movie and Ocean's Eight as well as the TV show American Horror Story and her hit reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. A source said: 'Kim is one of the most recognisable women on the planet. She believes she has what it takes to be a major movie star. She'd be perfect for The Bodyguard and she knows it. Everyone is very excited.' Ms Swift, 35, is believed to be working on a new album for release next year and is also reportedly anxious to settle down and start a family with her American football player boyfriend Travis Kelce. Ms Kardashian, 44, is launching a string of stand-alone stores to sell her Skims underwear but her schedule is reportedly more flexible than Ms Swift's. The Warner Bros source said: 'Kim was always the person attached to this project, Taylor's name wasn't mentioned until the news came out that the remake is in the works and then it was mostly Swifties saying she'd be perfect for the part. Of course no one would ever count out Taylor if she was interested in the role. Let the battle of the divas commence!'
