Gabe Perreault ready to take the next big step in his Rangers development
Access the Rangers beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mollie Walker about the inside buzz on the Rangers. tRY IT NOW In March, Gabe Perreault made the ultimate jump into his dream reality. After the Rangers selected the right wing in the first round (23rd overall) in 2023, he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team. Advertisement Perreault was thrown into the fire April 2 for his NHL debut and went on to play in five games for the Blueshirts last season. Months later, he is using the offseason to get back to that same place. In the Rangers developmental camp for prospects, Perreault stands out above the rest with his recent pro experience and impressive résumé as a sophomore at Boston College. Advertisement This summer, the 20-year-old has been working on gaining weight and muscle in the gym while training in Chicago with a group of NHL players that includes Patrick Kane, who he referred to as 'the best stickhandler in the world.' 'I'm going in with the mentality that I'm going to make the team,' Perreault said Wednesday after the second day of camp at the MSG Training Center. 'I think coming into camp, that's what everyone's mentality should be. Like I said, this summer, I'm going to do everything this summer. Train hard, work on the little things I need to.' Some of those 'little things' to show his readiness to the new Rangers coaching staff include puck battles, coverage on defense, and skating. Perreault had a phone call with new head coach Mike Sullivan a few days after he landed the job but has yet to have a conversation, outside of an introductory fashion, about the Rangers' expectations of him. Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images 'Whatever they need me to do, I'm willing to do,' Perreault said. 'So, I'm just coming into camp, trying to find a role and, you know, whatever they want me to do, I'm more than willing to do.' As a freshman at Boston College, the Sherbrooke, Quebec native impressed with 60 points on 19 goals and 41 assists in 36 games, ranking second in the nation in assists and tied for fourth in points. This past season, Perreault finished with 48 points on 16 goals and 32 assists across 37 games and was selected as a Hockey East First-Team All-Star. Robert Sabo for New York Post Perreault also won back-to-back gold medals with the U.S. at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships. The NHL experience came as a bit of a shock to Perreault, despite being around the lifestyle of a pro for much of his life as the son of Yanic Perreault, who had a 14-year NHL career. 'A little bit,' Perreault admitted about it being a humbling experience. 'I think overall I did a lot of little things well. I think defensively and all that, I was pretty good. But, I think going into this camp, like I said, just trying to make more of an impact, make some plays and all that.' In Perreault's first taste of the league, he played against only playoff teams — Devils, Wild, Lightning and the Stanley Cup champion Panthers. Across the five contests, he had five shots on goal out of 10 attempted shots and had six giveaways. He averaged nearly 15 minutes on the ice per game while wearing No. 94, just like his father. 'It's tough. You don't really know until you're in it, how tough it is,' he said. 'But, just overall super glad I did it and it's definitely going to help me going into camp. Former First-Rounder Rasmus Kupari Signs In Switzerland
Finnish forward Rasmus Kupari, 25, has signed a two-year contract with HC Lugano, the National League club announced on Tuesday. 'I think Lugano is the ideal place to take the next step in my career,' Kupari is quoted. 'I want to be a leader on and off the ice and bring my game to the entire rink, both defensively and offensively. I think my most important skill is skating.' Advertisement 'Rasmus has played his last five seasons in the NHL and AHL,' said Lugano GM Janick Steinmann. 'He's a first-line forward, a good skater with important qualities in every area of the rink. In North America, he has often been assigned more defensive roles, but with us he will be able to assert his skills as a two-ways player. I am convinced that his qualities adapt very well to the National League and he will also have a strong impact offensively. I am extremely happy to have him with us in Lugano and to be able to observe all his potential.' Kupari hails from Kotka, Finland, and turned pro with the Kärpät club in Oulu at age 17. He recorded 52 points in 104 Liiga regular-season and playoff games. Kupari was picked 20th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Despite this, he never played more than 66 NHL games in a season or recorded more than 15 points. Between 2020 and 2025, Kupari played in 217 regular-season games, scoring 14 goals and adding 24 assists for 38 points with 52 penalty minutes for the Kings and Winnipeg Jets. He also played 11 playoff games for Los Angeles, where he was held without a point. Internationally, Kupari played in three IIHF World Junior Championships, playing a large part in Finland's gold-medal win in 2019 with five points in seven games and scoring the winning goal in the final, but getting injured in the first game of the 2020 tournament. Helenius Shows Promise In First Season With Rochester
The Buffalo Sabres were fortunate at the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas after trading down three slots with the San Jose Sharks the day before the draft to garner an extra second-round pick. At #11, the Sharks selected London defenseman Sam Dickinson, who had a 91-point season with the OHL Knights, and Minnesota chose blueliner Zeev Buium, who won gold with Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships. Both are excellent prospects, but are also left-handed defensemen, which the Sabres have in ample quantity. At #14, the Sabres selected Finnish center Konsta Helenius, who many draft analysts labeled as the most pro-ready forward next to top pick Macklin Celebrini after playing last season in the Finnish SM-Liiga, and for Finland at the Under-18's, World Junior Championships and World Championships. The 19-year-old chose to come and play in the American Hockey League and finished with 35 points (14 goals, 21 assists) in 65 games with Rochester, but stepped up his level of performance in the Calder Cup Playoffs, with six points (3 goals, 3 assists) in eight playoff games. Although it would be unwise to rush Helenius to the NHL, it is encouraging that he was able to adjust to the North American game so quickly.
