Delhi: PWD to conduct structural audit of IIT, Modi Mill and RTR flyovers
The Public Works Department (PWD) has floated a ₹72.2 lakh tender for structural and hydrological audits along four key south Delhi flyovers, officials said on Saturday. They are: the IIT Flyover at the Africa Avenue intersection, the old RTR Flyover, two spans of the Modi Mill Flyover on the Outer Ring Road, and the culvert over Barapullah Nallah on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg. (RAJ K RAJ /HT PHOTO) The tender also seeks hydrological and structural consultancy to widen and develop a 300-metre road stretch near the New Ashok Nagar metro station by constructing three new culverts. The tenders are expected to open on July 24, and the consultancy award will follow shortly thereafter. With 540 days to complete the audit and associated consultancy, actual repair work is expected to begin by early 2026. 'Most of the flyovers along the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road are at least 15 years old and are showing signs of aging. Some have developed surface cracks and others need the expansion joints to be replaced. A comprehensive structural audit is required for this. We will need to gradually do this exercise for most of the flyovers that have not been repaired in recent years,' said a PWD official. Urgent problems fixed in May PWD in May conducted a basic audit of all 100 flyovers in Delhi and found that the Modi Mill flyover needs patchwork, plastering and painting along with an improvement of the central verge. The audit found that the old RTR flyover's crash barriers were missing and greenery of the central verge was not maintained. These problems were fixed immediately, officials said. 'After that audit we decided to do a comprehensive repair work on these flyovers after more scientific audits. So the work is being started now,' a second official said. The structural audit involves a battery of high-end non-destructive and semi-destructive tests on the flyovers. These include rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests for concrete strength, carbonation depth measurements, core extraction, resistivity and pH analysis, load test and advanced 3D reinforcement scanning using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). Officials said that the consultant will also have to prepare construction drawings for a fresh baseline assessment and identify areas that require urgent retrofitting or strengthening. The consultant will then prepare a detailed estimate, draw up tender documents for rehabilitation, inspect execution, and issue a safety certificate post-completion. 'This four-stage approach will ensure that all structural vulnerabilities are identified and addressed comprehensively,' the official added. Road along New Ashok Nagar metro station The site, located between Holiday Inn Crossing and the Metro station, requires careful hydrological planning due to proximity to major stormwater drains and heavy footfall, officials added. The culverts will be designed to improve both vehicular and pedestrian movement and will include footpaths, road markings, and crash barriers. The consultant will be tasked with soil investigation, structural design, preparing good-for-construction drawings and ensuring coordination with multiple agencies. Officials said that the work from audit to completing repairs will be completed in a year-and-a-half. HT recently conducted a spot check of the Outer Ring Road stretch with a traffic engineering expert, S Velmurugan, chief scientist and head of traffic engineering division of Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), and found that at the Modi Mill Flyover, there was no auxiliary lane for acceleration and deceleration, no speed table for at grade crossing, leading to accidents, inadequate signage and road marking and bus stop right after exiting the loop on one side. These were some of the reasons for persistent traffic at the point. Similarly, at IIT flyover, it was found that gore area treatment was not done, anti-glare treatment at median was required and the signage and markings were inadequate. 'Overall most of these flyovers need gore area treatment near entry/exit of flyovers and loops, properly designed signages, reassurance signages, road markings with two component two plastic paint and improving the geometrics of the loops/ramps and interchanges. Flyovers with restricted medians width need anti-glare treatment in the absence of plantation,' Velmurugan said.

Jagannath Rath Yatra today: Major traffic diversions in South Delhi till evening - Check routes to avoid
Delhi Police has issued a traffic advisory for today due to the 47th annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, which will take place in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. The grand procession is being organised by the Shri Neelachal Seva Sangh which began at 2 PM. In view of the expected crowd and to ensure smooth traffic flow, special arrangements have been made. IIT Flyover (Outer Ring Road): Commuters travelling from Mehrauli or Chhattarpur towards New Delhi via Outer Ring Road, Panchsheel Flyover, and August Kranti Marg should use the AIIMS Flyover to reach their destination. Alternatively, drivers can take a left turn from IIT Flyover towards Africa Avenue Road via IIT Gate. INA Market-Aurobindo Marg/AIIMS Flyover Loop: Travellers from New Delhi towards Mehrauli/Munirka are advised to use Ring Road and August Kranti Marg via AIIMS Flyover loop. Traffic on Aurobindo Marg from IIT Flyover to AIIMS Loop will be restricted from 2 PM to 6 PM. Congestion is expected on nearby roads including Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and August Kranti Marg. Emergency vehicles like police, ambulances, and fire brigades will be allowed on restricted routes, but advised to avoid them if possible due to delays. Plan travel in advance and avoid the affected routes between 2 PM and 6 PM. Use public transport to reduce congestion. Avoid illegal parking and follow instructions from traffic personnel. Delhi police issue traffic advisory in view of Jagannath Rath Yatra
New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): The Delhi Police on Friday issued a traffic advisory given the occasion of Jagannath Rath Yatra on Friday. As per the advisory, the traffic movement in Hauz Khas will be diverted or regulated between 2 pm to 6 pm on Aurobindo Marg and its adjoining stretches. According to the advisory, the restricted stretches include the IIT Flyover to AIIMS Loop with possible congestion on the Outer Ring Road, Ring Road and August Kranti Marg. 'In view of the 47th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on 27.06.2025 (Friday) from 02:00 PM to 06:00 PM in Hauz Khas, traffic movement will be regulated/diverted on Aurobindo Marg and adjoining stretches. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings on the occasion of the Jagannath Rath Yatra on Friday. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta participates in Jagannath Rath Yatra in Hauz Khas
New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday attended the 48th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Hauz Khas. CM Gupta was joined by BJP MP from New Delhi, Bansuri Swaraj. While speaking to the reporters, the Delhi CM expressed gratitude for receiving the opportunity to participate in the Jagannath Rath Yatra. She mentioned that she prayed to Lord Jagannath that give his blessings to Delhi and the country. 'Being a 'sevak of the state of Delhi, today I was able to 'jhadu gohari' in front of Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra and this Rath Yatra is being inaugurated by paying my respects to the Lord. Traffic in south Delhi likely to be disrupted till evening due to Jagannath Yatra
New Delhi: Vehicle movement in parts of south Delhi, particularly along the Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Aurobindo Marg, August Kranti Marg, and adjoining routes, is likely to be disrupted until late Friday evening due to the scheduled Lord Jagannath Yatra, which will take place from 2 pm to 6 pm. Commuters heading to airports or railway stations are advised to leave early and use public transport to reduce congestion. (Representative photo) The Delhi traffic police have issued an advisory in view of the religious procession, which will restrict vehicle movement on Aurobindo Marg, stretching from IIT Flyover to AIIMS Loop. Vehicles heading towards MG Road, Mehrauli, or Gurugram will face diversions via Ring Road and August Kranti Marg. Commuters from Mehrauli to New Delhi are advised to take Outer Ring Road and Panchsheel flyover instead. 'Emergency vehicles, including Delhi Police, ambulances for AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, fire brigade will be allowed free access where restrictions/diversion are imposed, but are advised to avoid Aurobindo Marg if possible,' a statement issued by the traffic police said. According to the traffic police, congestion is expected in these areas and commuters should be mindful about the parking. 'Park only in designated areas. Improperly parked vehicles will be towed and penalised,' the statement added. Commuters heading to airports or railway stations are advised to leave early and use public transport to reduce congestion. For real-time updates, the Delhi Traffic Police have asked commuters to follow their social media handles. 'Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to nearby officers or by dialling 112,' an officer said.
