Premier: Climate change a strategic opportunity for Sarawak

He believes the ongoing climate challenge opens doors to green jobs, resilient communities, and the preservation of Sarawak's natural heritage for future generations. 'I see climate change as a chance to create green employment, strengthen community resilience, and safeguard our natural legacy. 'I do not view climate action as a burden,' he said, as quoted in a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). The remarks were delivered on his behalf by Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, during the International Seminar on Humanity and the Climate Crisis: A Multidimensional Perspective, held here today. According to Abang Johari, Sarawak has chosen to see climate change not as a barrier to development but as a catalyst for economic and social transformation. This vision is being realised through the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which outlines an integrated and green development strategy. Among the key initiatives highlighted are investments in the hydrogen economy to support industrial decarbonisation, the expansion of hydropower as a renewable energy source and the development of carbon-related projects that prioritise forest conservation. He also emphasised that Sarawak is not waiting to be led in the sustainability agenda. Instead, it aims to be a frontrunner in shaping the region's green energy future. 'With this strategy, Sarawak is not only charting a new path for Malaysia but positioning itself as Asean's battery. We are not waiting to follow and we choose to lead,' he said. Also present at the seminar were Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Sarawak Islamic Council President Datuk Misnu Taha, State Mufti Datu Kipli Yassin, Deputy Chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) Professor Emeritus Dato Dr Mohd Yusof Othman, IKIM Director Associate Professor Dato Dr Mohamed Azam Mohamed Adil and other distinguished guests. Religious affairs minister condemns use of prayer for political attacks at rally
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has expressed regret over the actions of a politician who failed to respect the sanctity of prayer as a spiritual weapon of the ummah during a recent public assembly in the capital. He said the content of the prayer recited in front of the crowd not only contained unfounded accusations against the country's leadership but was also divisive among Muslims. 'The content of the prayer is deeply concerning as it could incite extremism and radicalism among the public,' he said in a statement posted on his social media yesterday. He said prayer was a powerful link between man and Allah, as well as a means of seeking mercy, forgiveness, and strength to face life's trials. As such, he urged the public to remain vigilant against any party that did not respect the status of prayer from the perspective of Islamic law and who used it narrowly for personal or group interests. Meanwhile, the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) also voiced concern over several incidents during the assembly. Its director-general, Assoc Prof Datuk Mohamed Azam Mohamed Adil, said the institute viewed seriously the acts of reciting Qunut Nazilah targeting national leaders, spreading sodomy allegations without evidence, and displaying symbolic effigies of leaders being caned — all of which were deemed to have violated Islamic ethics and decorum. 'Prayer is a noble act of worship and should be performed with wisdom and sincerity, free from emotional influence or political interest,' he said. He also explained that spreading sodomy allegations without four male witnesses of just character constituted the offence of 'qazaf', which is strictly forbidden in Islam, while mocking a person's dignity through symbolic insults clearly undermined the values of Malaysian decency. — Bernama

IKIM chairman's passing great loss to ummah in Malaysia, Singapore: Muslim Converts' Association of Singapore president
Chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), Professor Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, died today at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang. SINGAPORE: (Bernama) The passing of Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) chairman, Prof Datuk Dr Muhammad Nur Manuty, on Thursday (June 26) is not only a great loss to the ummah in Malaysia but also in Singapore. Muslim Converts' Association of Singapore (MCAS) President, Muhammad Imran Kuna, said Muhammad Nur was one of the pioneers who helped establish the association's education system and remained an important consultant to its work until his passing. Muhammad Imran said that during a visit to Muhammad Nur's home last month when he was unwell, the former senator's parting words were a reminder to ensure that the Muslim ummah in Malaysia and Singapore remain united and continue working together. "He wanted us to be the bridge, and for the ummah to strengthen and hold hands. Insha Allah, we will continue to uphold his niat (intention) and request,' he told Bernama. Muhammad Imran added that the IKIM chairman was instrumental in fostering collaboration between MCAS and other Muslim associations and organisations in Malaysia. "He was one of those who believed in what we wanted to do and had great ideas. He was a great inspiration and will always be remembered by us. "He was supposed to be one of the pillars supporting the first Asia-Pacific Cross-Culture Conference, which we are planning to hold in Singapore in November, and also a major Quran-related project we intended to launch in Singapore,' he said, noting that he had known Muhammad Nur for 15 years. In January, MCAS, which is also known as Darul Arqam, honoured Muhammad Nur with its highest accolade at the inaugural MCAS Academic Excellence Award ceremony, in recognition of his dedication, leadership, and transformative impact on the association. As the MCAS' Islamic education consultant from 2000 to 2009, Muhammad Nur played a key role in refining the Islamic education curriculum and da'wah methodologies. According to MCAS, he was central in developing specialised courses for new Muslim converts, covering subjects such as Aqidah, Fiqh, and Sirah. His efforts also extended to revising textbooks, conducting seminars, and organising workshops aimed at enhancing the educational experiences of new Muslims from diverse backgrounds. Muhammad Nur passed away at Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang at 11.27 am on Thursday at the age of 76. - Bernama
