Ministry Studying Tamu Desa As Model For Rural Entrepreneurship

GENERAL KOTA KINABALU, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives is conducting a study on the Tamu Desa (rural market) project as a model for entrepreneurship in the interior, which is expected to serve as a key reference for future empowerment initiatives. Its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the study, which runs from June to December, is being conducted by the Co-operative Institute of Malaysia (IKMa) Sabah branch, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). 'IKMa has already begun the study by appointing research officers from both IKMa and UMS to conduct field studies at tamu desa sites, focusing on community participation and the potential of using the cooperative model to manage and develop entrepreneurial activities,' he said in a statement today. According to Ewon, the study is significant as it will provide valuable input to his ministry in formulating relevant policies and decisions, particularly in areas such as maintenance, marketing, and networking among tamu desa premises. IKMa Sabah senior training officer and research team head Shamsiah Shamsudin said her team will also conduct research at night markets in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak to assess the success of cooperatives in managing these markets. -According to her, the comparative study is important as the concept of night markets closely mirrors that of Tamu Desa. Insights from night markets in Peninsular Malaysia can therefore inform the development of the more traditional Tamu Desa in Sabah. The study will also explore the potential for cooperatives to introduce an internal microfinancing system as an alternative form of financial support within the community. 'Our goal is to encourage cooperatives to practise self-help within the community, so that the benefits are reinvested back into the community itself - reducing over-reliance on government assistance,' she explained. The study, which involves 80 respondents, is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of the cooperative model's potential in driving rural entrepreneurship development.

Study on Tamu Desa cooperative model to enhance rural entrepreneurship

Ewon greeting operators at the Tamu Desa in Melangkap. KOTA BELUD (June 10): Institut Koperasi Malaysia (IKMa) will be conducting a study on the Tamu Desa project with Universiti Malaysia Sabah from June to December, this year. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP) Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said that IKMa, an agency under the Ministry, shall begin a study on the Tamu Desa Project: Cooperative Model as a Means of Empowering Rural Entrepreneurship to serve as a key reference for KUSKOP in strengthening rural entrepreneurship. 'IKMa will begin a study on the Tamu Desa project, a cooperative model as a means of empowering rural entrepreneurship, starting this month,' he said. 'We have appointed the research officers involving researchers from IKMa and UMS who will conduct field studies at the Tamu Desa locations to assess community participation and the potential of the cooperative model in managing and developing entrepreneurial activities at the Tamu Desa,' he said to reporters after launching the Jom Coop Programme organised by IKMa in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Tamu Desa premises at the Tamu Desa Melangkap near here on Tuesday. Ewon said the study is important as it will provide meaningful input to KUSKOP in formulating related policies and decisions, particularly involving aspects of maintenance, marketing and networking between Tamu Desa in different locations. In conjunction with the event, a total of 15 cooperatives from across the Kota Belud district that have received Tamu Desa premises facilities also attended a briefing session, which emphasised the role of cooperatives as management entities for Tamu Desa at the village or sub-district level. During the event, Ewon presented the letter of appointment to IKMa Sabah senior training officer, Shamsiah Shamsudin, as the head of the research team for the Tamu Desa Project: Cooperative Model as a Means of Empowering Rural Entrepreneurship. Meanwhile, Shamsiah said the research team is also conducting studies at night markets in Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak to observe the success of cooperatives in managing night markets. 'This is because the context of the night market is quite similar to the Tamu Desa. In Sabah, the cooperative is just starting its business at the Tamu Desa. 'So, when we go to the Peninsula, we will observe the success factors that enable them to generate millions in income, what additional activities help increase cooperative revenue, and also aspects of management. 'We will bring the context from the Peninsula to Sabah, and we will also visit the Tamu Desa in Tuaran and Kota Belud to gather input from them — what they truly need. This is because the Tamu Desa in Sabah is more of a tradition, a gathering place,' she said. She added that the study will also examine the potential for cooperatives to introduce an internal micro-financing system as an alternative source of financial aid within the community. 'We want to encourage cooperatives to implement self-help financial assistance within the community so that the benefits return to them directly, without being overly reliant on government aid,' she said. The study is expected to involve around 80 respondents. Also present were IKMa Director-General Datuk Mohd Ali Mansor, IKMa Sabah Director Mohd Razalie Raffae, and local leaders.

S'wak mosque cooperatives urged to go digital, tap wider markets

Misnu (third right) presents the certificate of participation to a representative of Masjid Darul Ulum Taman Desa Ilmu, Kota Samarahan. KUCHING (May 30): Mosque cooperatives should embrace digitalisation to better distribute and market their products, said Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha. He stressed that digitalisation can enhance the reach of cooperative goods and products, potentially opening access to both national and global markets. 'To strengthen cooperatives, we need people who understand digital technology. That is why we have to take in young people in reaching this goal,' he said during a knowledge discourse programme, themed 'Empowering Masjid Kariah' at a hotel here. In this regard, Misnu urged the Cooperative Commission of Malaysia (SKM) to create a platform for educating people on ways to use the digital tools to generate profit. 'We must make efforts to ensure that mosques have their own financial resources, and not only rely on donations from the people.' He also revealed that MIS will organise the Masjid Kariah Cooperative Award ceremony next year to encourage excellence and innovation among mosque cooperatives in growing their businesses. Malaysia Cooperative Institution (IKMa) director-general Mohd Zaib Mat Yunis, who was also present, added that IKMa Sarawak plans to implement three workshops focusing on the development of Masjid Kariah cooperatives. 'The planned follow-up workshops include the Strategic Management Workshop, Targeted Technical Workshop, and Records and File Management Workshop.' He said a total of 650 programmes across the country are set to commence in 2025, with 60 of these programmes scheduled to take place in Sarawak—all of which will encompass a diverse range of focus areas. 'These include 21 Cooperative Leadership Development Programmes (PIMPIN), aimed at enhancing leadership capacity within cooperatives; 18 Basic Cooperative Business Programmes (CoopBif), designed to build foundational business skills; 11 Cooperative Advisory Service Programmes, providing hands-on guidance and mentoring; and 10 Youth and Community Cooperative Programmes, focused on encouraging active participation of young people and local communities in cooperative activities.' These initiatives, he explained, reflect IKMa's commitment to supporting the growth and sustainability of cooperatives in Sarawak through targeted education, training, and community engagement. digital lead misnu taha Mosque cooperatives
