Doctors Call Off Strike as Govt Forms Committee on MMC Registration for Homeopaths
Nagpur: Private hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics remained open as usual on Friday after the proposed strike was called off on Thursday night. The decision followed the Maharashtra Medical Council's (MMC) official withdrawal of its controversial move to allow homeopathic doctors with a Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) to register as practitioners of modern medicine. In a notification dated July 11, 2025, the MMC stated: "The council hereby withdraws its earlier notification dated June 30, 2025, regarding the registration of CCMP-qualified doctors with the Maharashtra Medical Council. Further registration of such doctors shall remain suspended until further notice." This decision came following directives from the Maharashtra government, which has now constituted a high-level committee to examine the issue. The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report within two months. Reacting to the development, Dr Rajesh Sawarbandhe, president of IMA Nagpur, said the MMC's reversal is a major victory for patient safety and medical ethics. "As per instructions from the state IMA, the proposed withdrawal of services has been cancelled. All members have been requested to resume work," added Dr Jitendra Sahu, honorary secretary, IMA Nagpur. The Maharashtra State Resident Doctors' Association (MSRDA/Central MARD) also welcomed the government's move. "This is a victory for patient safety and medical ethics. We thank the government, MMC, and leader of opposition in state legislative council Ambadas Danve (who raised the issue in the council), for supporting the cause of modern medicine practitioners," said Dr Pratik Debaje, president of Central MARD.
