BCCI breaks silence on shifting IPL 2025 final from Kolkata to Ahmedabad: 'The decision was...'
As rain caused a considerable delay to the start of Qualifier 2 on Sunday in Ahmedabad, leaving the Ambanis visibly tense with a potential washout threatening Mumbai Indians' campaign, social media showed no mercy to the BCCI for shifting the match and the final from Kolkata to the Gujarat city. But a sigh of relief followed as no overs were lost in Qualifier 2, and rain stayed away from the final, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinched their maiden title by defeating Punjab Kings. Kolkata's Eden Gardens was originally scheduled to host Qualifier 2 and the final. However, the venue was changed during the IPL Governing Council meeting on May 20, when BCCI officials decided to alter the schedule based on weather forecasts. As a result, Hyderabad also lost out on hosting Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, with Chandigarh stepping in. According to a Cricbuzz report, BCCI justified its decision based on weather data for IPL cities. Kolkata had a reported 65% chance of rain, while Ahmedabad showed only 3%. The decision drew political backlash, but BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia broke his silence on Wednesday, saying: "The decision was never political. We banked on scientific material and inputs. There was no rain forecast in Ahmedabad at the time of the GC." BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla, too had spoken much on the same lines ahead of the final, dismissing reports and speculations suggesting a 'political agenda' behind shifting the venue. "There is no politics in the decision involving the shift in the venue of the IPL 2025 final. If the IPL hadn't been suspended for a week and the tournament had happened according to the initial schedule, the final would have been held in Kolkata, and the playoffs would have been held in Hyderabad. After the schedule was changed, the weather aspect was considered. Even broadcasters urged the venue shift to avoid losses," he told ANI. In hindsight, BCCI's conviction proved right. While Kolkata remained dry on Sunday, it was lashed by thunderstorms on Tuesday evening, coinciding with the second innings of the final. Had the match been held there, the result would likely have depended on the reserve day.

However, in the event that rain absolutely refuses to relent and ends up washing the game out, then that will mark a heartbreaking end to Mumbai Indians' campaign and their quest for a sixth IPL title. Since there isn't a reserve day for any game other than the final, the upcoming match will be deemed over once it crosses its final cut-off time – which includes the special two-hour extension granted exclusively for playoff games to combat rain delays. West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has strongly alleged that there is a political conspiracy behind the decision to shift the Indian Premiere League (IPL) playoffs and finals from Kolkata's Eden Gardens to Gujarat. He said that the weather is just an excuse.'Rain is an excuse, but it is a conspiracy. The BCCI and IPL Governing Council have blamed the weather but we have received the weather report. CAB had written a letter earlier to know what kind of weather there would be. The Meteorological Department had already written to CAB with the weather forecast between May 20 and May 30. The rest forecast will be published and will be analysed after May 26 said by Meteorological department. There is no forecast before this. We don't know when the IPL Governing Council became meteorologists,' Biswas a political motive behind the shift, he said, "We were supposed to have the IPL play-offs and finals at Eden Gardens. It is definitely being moved for political reasons. Why did you deprive the cricket lovers of Bengal of my words?" He refuted claims that law and order issues prompted the shift. 'The state BJP president and central minister wrote, the match has been moved from Eden for law and order. The IPL press release on May 20 said that the last four matches were supposed to be held in Hyderabad and Kolkata. Playoff games will be ‘very significant' for Mullanpur: Punjab Cricket Association secretary
CHENNAI: The playoffs and final of the 2025 Indian Premier League will happen in Mullanpur and Ahmedabad, the BCCI announced on Tuesday. The New PCA Stadium will host the Qualifier 1 and Eliminator on May 29 and 30, respectively, while Ahmedabad will host the Qualifier 2 and final (June 1 and 3). The decision, taken at the meeting on Tuesday, has largely to do with the weather patterns because of which the BCCI had held back on announcing the venues for the playoff games. "Hyderabad and Kolkata were initially supposed to host the last four games before the one week suspension of the tournament. The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement. This will be the third final in four years in Ahmedabad. Mullanpur and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), meanwhile, will host the IPL playoff games for the very first time. PCA secretary Dilsher Khanna is pleased about the new stadium in Mullanpur getting the opportunity to host the matches. "Honoured that the board thought about us and we will give it our best and host a great show. We are happy to host and very very thankful to be given the opportunity," Khanna told this daily. The New PCA Stadium, which was established in 2021 and has been hosting domestic matches since, was officially inaugurated on March 23, 2024 as the home venue for Punjab Kings. Since then, the stadium has hosted nine IPL league games as the home venue for PBKS. While it is yet to host an international game, the open air venue has the clearance from both the BCCI and ICC for the same. Hosting the IPL playoffs will certainly boost the profile of the venue which is all set to host the second T20I between India and South Africa men on December 11, 2025. Although there is no official confirmation or intimation to the PCA so far, the stadium was also floated as one of the venues for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup. Khanna believes the opportunity to host the IPL playoff is very significant for the venue and Punjab cricket. "We have a great facility and we have a very modern stadium. We will ensure that everyone goes there is very happy," Khanna said.
