[UPDATED] 36 Bangladeshis held over links to militant group, says minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals this week who were found to be directly involved in a radical militant movement based on Islamic State (IS) extremist beliefs and violent ideology. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the planned security operation, which began on April 24, was carried out in three phases in Selangor and Johor. "Of those detained, five people have been charged under the Offences Relating to Terrorism (Chapter VIA) of the Penal Code in the Shah Alam and Johor Baru Sessions Courts. "Another 15 people have been issued deportation orders, while 16 others are still under investigation for their involvement in the militant movement," he said in a statement. Saifuddin said intelligence gathered by the Special Branch revealed that the group had introduced IS-inspired ideology into the country and had formed recruitment cells within their own community. "These cells were set up to indoctrinate radical beliefs, raise funds for terrorist activities, and to ultimately overthrow the legitimate government in their home country," he said. He added that Malaysia would not serve as a safe haven or staging ground for any foreign extremist movement. "This action proves that the Madani government is serious and uncompromising when it comes to matters that threaten national security," he said. He also praised the police, particularly the Special Branch, for their efficiency and professionalism in carrying out the operation and maintaining public safety. "The Home Ministry will continue to strengthen intelligence capabilities and increase enforcement efforts. "We will also work closely with both local and international security agencies to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful, stable, and free from terrorist threats. "Any attempt to use Malaysia as a base for militant operations or as a transit hub for extremist groups will be met with firm, swift, and effective action," he said.

Terror conspiracy foiled at inception, reveals Telangana DGP
HYDERABAD: Reacting to the recent incident involving a terrorist module allegedly plotting IS-inspired bomb attacks, Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender stated that Telangana's counterintelligence cell and other agencies identified the threat at its very inception and successfully nipped it in the bud. He added that those attracted to extremism would be supported to reintegrate into society through counselling. The DGP made these remarks while attending a demonstration of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which involved over 1,000 personnel at Hussain Sagar on Friday. 'At the formation stage, our agencies identified and apprehended the members of this group. This module was very new and lacked experience,' he said. He also noted that around 300 Maoists have surrendered to the police so far and encouraged others who wish to surrender to come forward. Regarding Operation Kagar, he mentioned that the Chhattisgarh police and the Union government are conducting it on a large scale. On the Gulzar Houz fire incident, he confirmed that the government has formed a committee to investigate the matter and is taking the issue very seriously. 'Most of the casualties were due to suffocation. Based on the committee's report, the government will take further action,' he said. Meanwhile, the DGP revealed that 510 arms licenses have been issued across the state in the past three years. Overall, Telangana has a total of 7,125 active arms licenses and 9,294 registered weapons.

Man who took pressure cooker bomb into hospital jailed for life
A man who took a viable pressure cooker bomb into a hospital in Leeds intending to "kill as many nurses as possible" has been jailed for life. Mohammad Farooq was sentenced to a minimum term of 37 years at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday. Farooq, who was a trainee nurse, was last year found guilty of attempting to launch an IS-inspired suicide attack using a homemade bomb on the hospital where he worked in 2023. He was also jailed for plotting to attack RAF Mentwith Hill. Sentencing Farooq, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb praised the actions of Nathan Newby, the patient who talked him out of exploding his home-made device. The device would have been twice as powerful as those used by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers. The judge said: "He's an extraordinary, ordinary man whose decency and kindness on 20 January 2023, prevented an atrocity in a maternity wing of a major British hospital." She said Mr Newby was a "modest and gentle man whose evidence was among the most remarkable this court has ever heard". The jury heard how the Clinical Support Worker was inspired by Daesh propaganda to procure weapons and manufacture an explosive device in readiness for an attack.
