When Rajesh Khanna reacted to Dimple Kapadia's decision not to divorce him: ‘Baat toh dilon ki hai'
Superstar Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia's marriage was one of the most talked-about unions in Bollywood. The two tied the knot in 1973, when Dimple was just 15 and on the brink of stardom with her debut film 'Bobby'.
Rajesh, often fondly called Kaka, was already the biggest name in Hindi cinema by then. The couple welcomed two daughters,
Twinkle Khanna
and Rinkie Khanna. Their marriage quickly became the subject of endless gossip, fascination, and headlines.
Choosing to live separately
By 1982, Rajesh and Dimple decided to live apart. But despite living separate lives for so long, they never officially ended their marriage. Dimple never agreed to a divorce, which left many surprised — including Rajesh himself.
Rajesh on why Dimple did not divorce him
In a 1990 interview with ITMB Shows,
Rajesh Khanna
spoke honestly about this unusual bond. When asked if there was any chance of getting back together, he said,
'Doobara matlab? Pehle kahan alag the? Yeh hai ki alag-alag rehte hai kyunki abhi tak divorce nahi diya hai na usne, wo deti hee nahi hai. Yeh to woh jane kis liye nahi deti hai, pata nahi kis liye. Jab woh ayegi yahan Vancouver mein tab unse ye poochiyega.

Woh apko sahi jawab degi. Main to itna hi keh sakta hoon ki nahi diya hai divorce, toh nahi diya. Unki marzi hai. Aur ab kya hai, baat toh dilon ki hai (Come back together as in? We are not divorced; yes we don't live together, but she is not willing to divorce me for reasons best known to her.
If you get to interview her, you must ask her why. It is ultimately her choice. This is a matter of the heart)...'
Only one film together
Even though they were married, Rajesh Khanna and
Dimple Kapadia
acted together in just one film — 'Jai Shiv Shanker' in 1990.
Rajesh Khanna passed away on 18 July, 2012 at his famous bungalow Aashirwad. Even though they had been living separately for decades, Dimple was by his side in his last moments.
