Castell Coffi known for Welsh cakes nominated for award

Castell Coffi, owned by Ian and Leigh Crawford, in Caldicot, has been nominated for the Best of Welsh Business Awards in the South East Wales section. The ceremony will take place at Maes Manor, in Blackwood, on September 7, and customers can vote for their favourite. Owner Ian Crawford said: "Well, it's about time these Welsh cakes won something! "Please vote on the link for us if you have a minute. "We have plans to brand our Welsh cakes as people are going nuts over them. "I always knew my mother's recipe would be popular but they sell out every day and there are times during the day when people are buying them in advance because I can't cook them fast enough." Castell Coffi, situated in Caldicot Business Park, has gained fame for its homemade Welsh cakes made from a family recipe. Since opening earlier this year, the shop has attracted customers from across the country. It has also become a "celebrity hotspot", with renowned visitors such as actor and director Mackenzie Crook and comedian Omid Djalili. The shop was recently voted the best coffee shop in Gwent on TripAdvisor. It is open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm, serving coffee, homemade Welsh cakes, toasties, paninis, fresh sandwiches, and cakes. One reviewer said: "Fabulous coffee shop catering largely for local workers. "Really friendly staff, great coffee, but omg, those Welsh cakes. "Heavenly."

West Lothian street party plan as military museum marks VJ Day 80th anniversary

West Lothian's military museum has seen an upsurge in visitors and wider support in the month since it was revealed that it will have to relocate from its current home in the grounds of the war-blind veterans estate at Linburn, Wilkieston. A military museum hunting for a new home has unveiled plans to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a street party. ‌ West Lothian's military museum has seen an upsurge in visitors and wider support in the month since it was revealed that it will have to relocate from its current home in the grounds of the war-blind veterans estate at Linburn, Wilkieston. ‌ And museum owner Ian Inglis revealed they hoped to attract more crowds. ‌ He said: 'We will be open as normal on the 15 of August, from 10am to 4pm. We will have a special exhibition on the far east campaign including a diorama of Bridge over the River Kwai, made by our resident modeller. Normal entry fees apply to the museum. 'We will also be having a street party between 11am to 4pm, and anyone is welcome to come along, there is no charge for that.' He added that tea, coffee and juice will be supplied but people should bring along food. There is no charge but all donations are welcome. ‌ Ian also revealed there would be a talk by best-selling author Mary Monro, who's book Stranger in My Heart tells the remarkable story of her father's escape from the Japanese occupiers of Hong Kong. Ms Monro will be at the museum on the day signing copies of the book. Ian told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: 'Mary Monro wrote about her dad's exploits in WWII. He was captured by the Japanese in Hong Kong and sent to a POW camp. ‌ 'He did manage to escape from the camp. It's a fantastic book, there will be a few copies there to purchase that will be signed by the author.' Founded by Ian, who served in the Royal Artillery, largely around his own collection of militaria the museum has become an award winning attraction. The museum has also become a community hub for local veterans and hosts weekly breakfasts and other events to keep ex-servicemen and women connected. The museum is also staffed by ex service volunteers. ‌ 'We're not just a museum we're more than that, we' re unique education resource. We we have the veterans hub as well. It would be ideal if we could stay locally, We don't want to move to far away, we'd like to stay within easy access to the bridges.' Such has been the success of the museum the search has been on for a while for a new home in the area. That hunt has gathered new urgency since the charity which owns Linburn - Sight Scotland Veterans - announced their intention to sell the estate for housing development. The museum features indoors and outdoor exhibits of equipment, uniforms, vehicles, and even a First World War trench display. ‌ Somewhere nearby for a new home would be ideal as a new home, as Ian pointed out. The museum's growth in popularity draws visitors from across the UK and the world. Earlier this month an American family, rolled up from Edinburgh airport taking time out before checking into their hotel. 'We get a lot of that, and people going to the airport,' he said. 'They have a few hours to kill before their flight so they pop in here.'

A Place In The Sun guest breaks down in tears as house hunt takes a dramatic turn - and host Jean Johansson tells them to 'take a moment'

An A Place In The Sun guest broke down in tears as her house hunt took a dramatic turn. A previous episode of the Channel 4 show, which aired back in 2023, saw couple Manigeh and Ian enlist help from expert Jean Johansson, 43, to find their dream home in Torrevieja, Spain. The pair - who share 10 kids between them - had a budget of £90,000 and wanted to make sure that the property had two bedrooms. But at the very start of the episode, Jean made it clear that it would have been quite difficult to get that with the money that they had. 'It is a challenge in this area so I know what you can get for £90,000. 'There will be compromises to be had but I'm going to do my best to get all what you want into the property,' she told them. Jean took the couple to a number of different properties, including a three-bed townhouse in La Torreta, and others in Torrevieja, El Chaparral and Aguas Nuevas. And the townhouse in Torrevieja was the one that really caught their eyes. The property boasted a front terrace, rooftop solarium and two communal pools. As well as that, the apartment also had a large living/dining room and a semi-open kitchen, and exactly what they wanted - more than two bedrooms. Not only that, it was under budget with an asking price of £84,052. The pair decided to make an offer right at the end of the instalment. 'We'd like to put an offer in,' Ian told Jean. Jean replied: 'Congratulations you two. This is exciting news. So... what offer would you like me to take forward to the agent?' Ian said: 'I think £74,000. 'I know it's a bit cheeky, but the kitchen we felt is in need of a bit of an upgrade. 'So we're looking to do some work there.' Jean then made a call to the estate agent and Manigeh and Ian were both very nervous about the call back. 'How are you feeling?' Jean asked. Manigeh replied: 'Oh so nervous you won't believe.' Ian added: 'Well this is the serious part now.' After answering the phone to the estate agent, Jean told them: 'The agent has said that the owners can't go that low. 'The owners are looking for £81, 897. I know that is specific, that's the number they've got in their head.' Ian said: 'We're happy to come up a bit. Can we kind of, meet them half way? Come up to about £80,000?' Moments later Jean's ring tone went off and she answered her mobile. Not giving much away, she told the agent: 'I'll pass that on to the couple. 'Now I've got some news for you guys, you can get this property for £81,000. Do we have a deal?' The pair both replied: 'We have a deal!' Jean called the agent back to tell them and she said out loud: 'We have a deal. We have a deal.' Manigeh became very emotional and clapped her hands. Jean told them: 'I'm so happy for you guys.' And Manigeh couldn't contain her emotion and started crying. She said: 'Unbelievable. Really happy.' 'Take a moment!' Jean said. Ian said: 'I think that says it all, hey?'

However, the supporter, who was known to many as Uncle Dougie, was sadly rushed to a Danish hospital after taking ill during his trip. He is currently on a ventilator in the ICU and needs treatment. His son Ian shared the news in a message posted on Facebook through The Provincial Grand Lodge of Edinburgh. It said: "As you can imagine, it's come as a shock to us all, and with it happening away from home, that's just added to the complications and the stresses of the situation. "There's not too much information at the moment, but a brief summary of what has happened is that my Dad landed in Copenhagen on Tuesday evening and got on the train to travel to Henring for the match, but had to get off about an hour into the journey as he took really unwell. It's come as a shock to us all, and with it happening away from home, that's just added to the complications and stresses Ian "The good news is that there's been a slight improvement in him since he's been admitted, and he's responding well to dialysis and the antibiotics. "He is, however, still in intensive care and is still sedated and on a ventilator. "My mum and sister are staying at the hospital with him and are providing updates as and when they can, which I will share. "We're hoping that he continues to improve, but I think it's still going to be a long road of recovery ahead for him yet." Legendary Mixu Paatelainen lifts lid on Jim McLean's brutal blast, infamous Walter Smith bust-up and his Hibs job regrets And his fellow supporters have launched a fundraiser to try and raise vital cash for his family to help cover some of the costs. The GoFundMe page explains that his loved ones are trying to navigate through the complicated insurance process. But they are urging people to help the family with Dougie's ongoing healthcare costs in the meantime. Organiser Peter Manson wrote on the page: "I am starting a fundraising to help cover the cost of medical care and accommodation for a well-known friend to many. "As some of you may know, Uncle Dougie (Dougie Sneddon) was over in Denmark to see his beloved team. "Dougie became seriously ill and is in a Danish Hospital and is in ICU, and on a ventilator. "So the family need our donations to cover the cost till they find out about insurance. We're hoping that he continues to improve, but I think it's still going to be a long road of recovery ahead for him yet Ian "Not like the UK, everything must be covered first. "Any funds I receive will be transferred to the family ASAP. "I will also take cash donations and keep a check of who donated it and mention them if they request it. Please share". Many have flocked to social media to wish Dougie well in hospital. One person said: "Get well soon Dougie. Sending love to you and your family at this difficult time Another added: "Keep fighting and get well soon Bud." Someone else wrote: "Get well soon from a Hearts fan". While a fourth commented: "My best wishes, praying for a speedy recovery and happy outcome". And a fifth posted: "Thinking of you Dougie, get well bro". Anyone looking to donate to the fundraiser can do so here.
