Animation All-Stars Pendleton Ward, Rebecca Sugar, Ian Jones-Quartey, Patrick McHale Unite For One-Of-A-Kind Adult Swim Special (EXCLUSIVE)
An all-star team of animation legends took the stage today in Annecy, as part of Adult Swim's first dedicated Studio Focus at what has become the biggest animation event in the world. Celebrated for shaping some of the most beloved and groundbreaking animated series of our time, a powerhouse collection of creators including Pendleton Ward ('Adventure Time'), Rebecca Sugar ('Steven Universe'), Ian Jones-Quartey ('OK K.O.!'), Patrick McHale ('Over the Garden Wall') is reuniting for a one-of-a-kind animated special so mysterious, even they don't know what it's about. Animation, DC Studios 'The Fans Are More Intense Than Ever': Matt Groening, David Silverman and Matt Selman on 'The Simpsons' Enduring Appeal Adult Swim's 'The Elephant,' introduced by Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen and this team, is an animated special where three animation teams are each responsible for one of three acts, without any knowledge of what the others are making. With Sugar and Jones-Quartey working as a duo and McHale and Ward overseeing their own separate parts, The Elephant is guided by 'game masters' and 'Adventure Time' veterans Jack Pendarvis and Kent Osborne, for a storytelling experiment that unfolds as a collaborative surprise, ultimately merging into a single, unexpected narrative. Along with this unique animated experiment, Adult Swim unveiled a behind-the-scenes documentary that showed the directors' unconventional situation. Coming to Adult Swim and produced by independent award-winning production company Titmouse,'The Elephant' promises to be a truly original experience, not only for audiences, but also for the acclaimed and talented creators themselves. One that had Annecy's audience most definitely on board. But this formidable gathering of animation talents in a new format wasn't the only thing fans cheered on during the news-packed presentation. After many rumors, Adult Swim announced the official renewal of high-octane and fan-favorite anime 'Ninja Kamui' for not one but two additional seasons. A breakout hit during its debut on Adult Swim's anime/action block Toonami, the series also earned critical acclaim amongst the anime fandom, winning 'Best Original Anime' at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, which took place earlier this year in Tokyo. The forthcoming season of 'Ninja Kamui,' currently in production, will follow a new conspiracy of cataclysmic proportions. 'Ninja Kamui' is helmed for Adult Swim by Japanese production company Sola Entertainment. Adult Swim completed this animated candy-filled studio focus with more information about the latest 'Smalls' the network's incubator for emerging artists and nurtured talents under the supervision of 'Smalls' Creative Director / Executive Producer Dave Hughes. It is from this rich environment that emerged 'Ha Ha You Clowns,' a 'Smalls' project soon to be turned into a full-blown animated series by creator Joe Cappa. Adult Swim announced the news last year at this very festival, along with another 'Smalls' adaptation into series format, 'Oh My God, Yes!,' and the renewal of the beloved 'Smiling Friends' series for a third season. Almost exactly a year after this announcement, 'Ha Ha You Clowns' was presented by Cappa at Annecy in an exclusive first look. The series' surreal comedy that was found in the 'Smalls' shorts remains as moving and sensitive in this new format, as the audience follows a group of deep-voiced, musclebound father-bros who are actually sensitive, well-educated and articulate sweethearts who would do anything for one another. A Steven Universe spinoff is in the works at Amazon
Though Steven Universe 's time on Cartoon Network has come and gone, Amazon is stepping in to keep the story going. During a Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe panel at this year's Annecy Animation Festival, Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar announced that Amazon is moving forward with a new spinoff series focused on side character Lars Barriga. Titled Lars of the Stars, the show will chronicle Lars' adventures in space as he and his crew of fellow pirates 'evade the authorities and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire,' per Deadline. Amazon has yet to officially greenlight Lars of the Stars, but Sugar is attached to executive produce alongside Ian Jones-Quartey. Currently, there's no word on which members of the original show might return, or when the show could premiere. But during her talk at Annecy, Sugar emphasized that she 'can't wait to share [the sequel] with you and can't thank you enough for all your support.'

‘Steven Universe' Will Return With a New Spinoff Sequel
5 years after it first came to an end, 'Steven Universe' is coming back–and heading to a few new places. The world of Steven Universe is returning to animation. 5 years after we bid farewell to Steven, Connie, the Crystal Gems, and Beach City, Rebecca Sugar's animated saga is making a comeback… just not in the form you may have expected. At Annecy today, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network announced that a new series, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, is currently in development. Described only as a 'follow-up' to Steven Universe and its epilogue series Steven Universe Future, little details are currently known about Lars of the Stars, including who, if any, among the former Steven Universe cast and crew are returning for the series, other than the return of Sugar and long-time Steven Universe collaborator Ian Jones-Quartey as executive producers. Instead of following Steven and Connie as they grow up and make a life for themselves away from Beach City, Lars of the Stars will go intergalactic, following the adventures of Lars Barriga, the former Beach City donut store employee who found himself transformed into a pink-hued, magical Human-Gem oddity after a brush with death (and Steven's healing powers). Taking on a ship of his own leading a crew of off-color Gems, Lars and his crew became revolutionary smugglers, as they rebelled against the grip of the tyrannical Gem homeworld and its rulers. Now that the Diamonds and Earth are at peace though, we last saw Lars heading off for, well, the stars once more, at the climax of Future–to, as the press release provided by Warner Bros. states, 'smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire.' One thing we do know however, is that Lars of the Stars will have a streaming home after the transformation of Cartoon Network and Warner Bros.' own streaming shakeups as of late: the series is being developed for Amazon's Prime Video. We'll bring you more on Warner Bros.' plans for Lars of the Stars as and when we learn them.
