Inside Ibiza ‘death hotel' on lockdown after two Brits die in a month… as rooftop guards watch tourists & parties banned

IBIZA Rocks is on lockdown after its fourth death in just three months - with parties cancelled, heightened security and night-time patrols. Staff at the popular San Antonio party spot are on edge - with non-guests banned from the hotel and security guards pacing the roof with torches at night. 14 14 14 After a spate of tragic tourist deaths at the hotel, The Sun visited the infamous resort. At least seven holidaymakers have died at Ibiza Rocks - dubbed the "Death Hotel". And the death of two Brits - Evan Thomson, 26, and Gary Kelly, 19 - in just three weeks sparked the cancellation of all upcoming events"out of respect". While the hotel's pool is still packed with party-goers, security guards have ramped up patrols - particularly at night - and blocked off the entrance to the building. Hotel guest Layla Right, 25, from Newcastle, revealed how staff have been patrolling the roof at night and beaming torches at anyone "d*****g around" on the balconies. She told us: "As soon as they see anyone being silly on the balconies, they flash the torch straight at them. "They must be terrified of it happening again. "There was an Australian bloke hanging off the balcony earlier and they were onto him in a flash." Layla said it was 'eerie' the morning after Gary died - but added that the atmosphere is back to normal now. And she said guests are under the impression that the events will be resumed this week. Teen holidaymaker, 19, plunges to his death in horror fall just days after Scots tourist died at SAME Ibiza hotel Layla's pal Lee, 30, bumped into Gary's heartbroken friends outside the hotel after the tragedy on July 21. Gary plunged from a third floor balcony at the four-star hotel - and paramedics could do nothing to save him at the scene. Lee said: 'You could see they were absolutely devastated. "And they're still staying there now - they've said they know it's what he would have wanted. 'So they've stayed on to honour his memory.' Gary - a keen ice hockey player - had arrived just hours before he died and police are still investigating his death. Two weeks earlier, Evan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, died in similar circumstances after a fall from a sixth-floor balcony. Evan's loved ones slammed the hotel's response in the following days. They claimed they were stuck in an office for hours without answers and heard pressure washers cleaning the spot where he fell just 90 minutes after he fell. The hotel has temporarily cut its daytime DJ party programme, which usually pumps out music by the pool until 8pm. But £18 tickets are currently available online for non-guests for the 'Love Juice Ibiza Day Party - which happens every Saturday. 14 14 14 Harry Harknett, 25, from Bedfordshire, checked into Ibiza Rocks on Monday just hours after Gary's death - to find a letter offering them compensation. He said: 'We weren't told anything about the death by the hotel, which felt a bit odd. "The first I knew about it was when I looked at the news, and I'd already checked in by then. 'We got a letter under the bedroom door explaining that the events have been cancelled due to 'unforeseen circumstances', and offering everyone compensation. 'Other than a strong security presence, you wouldn't know anything had happened. "The vibe is still upbeat inside - the pool was absolutely packed at 2pm today." The pool and dancefloor are usually accessible to non-guests if they buy a day pass, but The Sun was turned away when we tried to buy one on Wednesday. And security guards have taken up positions on the street - meaning you can't get within 40 metres of the hotel entrance without a booking. Jack Cairns, 27, from Southampton, is staying with four mates for a week at Ibiza Rocks and arrived on Sunday - a day before Gary fell. He said: 'It's so sad. Not what you want to hear when you get to a hotel. 'I don't know how it happened exactly [to Gary]. But I do think the railings on the balconies could be higher. 'Some of the third-floor balconies have railings that are barely waist height. "When it's a party hotel, it makes sense to have more than that.' 14 14 14 Harry called for higher barriers around the balconies - something 'up around chest height'. Jack continued: 'I've definitely noticed that security ramped up. "You see them patrolling the corridors which they didn't do before. 'Most people know what's happened because all the events have been cancelled - which is the main reason most people booked the place.' Some guests staying at the hotel had heard nothing of the recent deaths until they were approached by The Sun. Evan's friends said the hotel's handling of the situation was "horrific" on the night he died. His pal Blair Robertson, 25, told Press and Journal: "We heard the jet washes from the ground cleaning the area where Evan died and it had only been 90 minutes or so since he was found. "That was the worst thing for us to hear – how fast they tried to get things back to normal." Another pal, James Shand, said: "Seeing them post 'are you all ready for the next event?' within hours of it happening was sickening. "If something like this happened in the UK, the place would get shut down." 14 14 Two deaths rocked Ibiza in April when a British woman collapsed and died in her room. Paramedics and police rushed to the hotel but pronounced the 33-year-old dead after 40 minutes trying to resuscitate her. Just three days earlier, a 19-year-old Italian tourist died after she fell from the fourth-floor of the hotel. The woman is said to have been partying late into the night before returning to her room and finding she was locked out. In August 2020, another incident saw a young woman pass away in her sleep as she stayed at the hotel. Amy Connor, 23, had been sunbathing with her sister and their friends before heading back to her room to shower and have a nap. The seventh reported death at Ibiza Rocks dates back to 2008. British holidaymaker Michael Robertson, 23, collapsed at the hotel after taking ecstasy. He was rushed to the Can Misses Hospital but passed away suffering repeated heart failure. After Gary's death, Ibiza Rocks said in a statement: "The safety and well-being of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. "Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time." Full statement from Ibiza Rocks When approached for a comment, Ibiza Rocks said: "The tragic incidents of the past few weeks have deeply affected many. "We continue to work closely with the authorities and our thoughts and support remain with everyone impacted. "Much of the hard work that goes into safety and security in hotels and venues across the world happens behind closed scenes. "With thousands of guests passing through our doors every summer, it takes a collective effort from our team, security and local partners to maximise safety for all. "In times like these, care matters - but so does action. "We have zero tolerance for any behaviour that puts our guests or our team at risk and we are building on the strong work we already do to go even further. "Out of respect and privacy for the people involved, we don't usually comment on individual reports posted online, but that certainly doesn't mean we're not always listening. "We're committed to working with anyone who raises solid concerns so that we can establish the facts and take the appropriate steps. "Our hotel remains open and more information on the future events programme will be shared as soon as possible." 14

Spate of tragedies at Spanish ‘Death Hotel' Ibiza Rocks laid bare after deaths of at least 7 tourists including Brits

A POPULAR hotel in Spain has gained unwanted global attention after a spate of tragic tourist deaths - including two Brits in the last month. At least seven holidaymakers have lost their lives at the now infamous Ibiza Rocks party resort which has been labelled as the "Death Hotel". 10 10 10 San Antonio's Ibiza Rocks had been known as one of the Spanish island's most beloved spots for partygoers. For two decades, some of the biggest events of the summer have taken place at the huge poolside area. Huge DJs and celebrities have welcomed in thousands of guests to the star-studded pool parties up until this year. A spate of recent deaths, including Brits Evan Thomson, 26, and Gary Kelly, 19, has caused all of the upcoming events to be paused. The venue announced their decision in a statement which came just hours after the death of Kelly. The teenage ice hockey star lost his life after falling from a third floor balcony at Ibiza Rocks in the early hours of the morning. Two ambulances were sent to the scene but there was nothing the paramedics could do to save him. The statement from Ibiza Rocks posted on their social media pages read: "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. "Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time." Just two weeks earlier, fellow Brit Thomson also died in similar tragic circumstances. He was on holiday with pals celebrating his birthday at the hotel when he plunged from the sixth-floor to his death. There has been no suggestion the hotel is responsible for any of the deaths. But the Aberdeen lad's family were quick to call out the hotel for their response to his death. They claimed the hotel's handling of the situation was "horrific". Evan's friend Blair Robertson, 25, said: "We heard the jet washes from the ground cleaning the area where Evan died and it had only been 90 minutes or so since he was found. "That was the worst thing for us to hear – how fast they tried to get things back to normal." His other friend James Shand told Press and Journal: "Seeing them post 'are you all ready for the next event?' within hours of it happening was sickening. "If something like this happened in the UK, the place would get shut down." 10 10 As police continue to investigate both of the young Brit's deaths, a worrying number of other tragedies at the hotel have been revealed. Ibizan outlet Noudiari even reported that the "latest incident adds to a worrying statistic that has led some people to refer to Ibiza Rocks as the "Death Hotel'." Two deaths rocked Ibiza in April when a British woman collapsed and died in her room. Paramedics and police rushed to the hotel but pronounced the 33-year-old dead after 40 minutes trying to resuscitate her. The woman reportedly had a cardioverter defibrillator implant which helped to monitor her heartbeat and treat abnormal heart rhythms. Just three days earlier, a 19-year-old Italian tourist died after she fell from the fourth-floor of the hotel. The woman is said to have been partying late into the night before returning to her room and finding she was locked out. She then decided to try and access her room via a balcony, according to local media. The teen lost her footing and fell to her death. In a statement afterwards, Ibiza Rocks Hotel said: "Following the tragic events that occurred this week due to causes beyond our control, IRG expresses its dismay and extends its utmost support to the families of the victims, thanking people for respect for their privacy in a situation of immeasurable pain." 10 In August 2020, another incident saw a young woman pass away in her sleep as she stayed at the hotel. Amy Connor, 23, had been sunbathing with her sister and their friends before heading back to her room to shower and have a nap. Her friends found her unconscious in bed a short time later. Heartbroken sister Toni has always praised the hotel for how they handled the situation. She said they offered the group help with everything from flights home to even paying for extra cases to help them feel comfortable. One of the most notable deaths linked to the hotel came in 2014. The final minutes of former rugby player Luke Rhoden's life were steeped in mystery for years after his family announced his passing. Rhoden, 25, died on September 2, with police initially saying he fell from a first-floor balcony before running through the hotel screaming "someone's trying to kill me". The Spanish Civil Guard managed to subdue the athlete by giving him a sedative and placed him in an ambulance. He then died at the scene as paramedics spent 40 minutes trying to revive him. But theories soon emerged that Rhoden's death may have been caused by the officers as they tried to restrain him. Dad Norman would call for an investigation after reading reports his son was "excessively beaten" on social media. An inquest was launched in Bolton as a jury found he died of asphyxiation caused by the excessive restraining methods adopted by the Guardia Civil and an adverse reaction to drug use. Ibiza Rocks was at the centre of the police probe for weeks but staff were later praised by cops after a woman filmed the altercation. The seventh reported death at Ibiza Rocks dates back to 2008. British holidaymaker Michael Robertson, 23, collapsed at the hotel after taking ecstasy. He was rushed to the Can Misses Hospital but passed away suffering repeated heart failure.

Shocking toll of British fatalities at Spanish 'death hotel': How at least seven tourists have died at Ibiza Rocks amid mounting fury over safety at famed party resort

For twenty years, San Antonio's Ibiza Rocks has organised some of the biggest events of the summer, welcoming huge names and thousands of guests to its star-studded pool parties. A brightly coloured panopticon of hotel rooms overlooks the vast courtyard below, meaning tourists are never more than a minute away from the action. But on Monday, as the summer festivities came into full swing, the venue announced it was pausing all advertised events. It was the 'right thing' to do, it said, in the wake of two tragic deaths on its premises. The statement came just hours after the death of Gary Kelly, a young British ice hockey player who fell from the third floor of the hotel just after midnight on July 21. In the days before, the hotel had faced criticism over the decision to stay open following the death of Evan Thomson, who fell from the sixth floor earlier this month. In their time of grief, friends and family bravely came together to share their pain and concerns for the safety of others. Mr Thomson's sister, Telia, urged that a glass panel atop the balconies would be enough to save 'further families having to go through this unbelievable pain'. James Shand, a friend, acknowledged it was not the first time someone had died at the hotel. 'If something like this happened in the UK, the place would get shut down,' he told Press and Journal, describing the venue as 'inhumane'. The tragedies have brought into focus past incidents at the resort and raised important questions about local regulations and responsivity to crisis. Ibizan outlet Noudiari, reporting on Tuesday, assessed that the 'latest incident adds to a worrying statistic that has led some people to refer to Ibiza Rocks as the "Death Hotel"'. There is nothing to suggest the hotel is responsible for the deaths. MailOnline has contacted Ibiza Rocks Hotel for comment. Nineteen-year-old Gary Kelly died after falling from the third floor of the Ibiza Rocks hotel in the early hours of Monday, July 21. Police said that initial investigations suggested his fall from a balcony had been accidental. Two ambulances were sent to the scene at around 12.40am, but paramedics were unable to revive the teenager. Hours later, Ibiza Rocks announced that it was 'pausing' its advertised events programme, 'given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved'. 'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.' The decision came days after the death of 26-year-old Evan Thomson, who died at the venue on July 7, while on holiday with friends. The young man from Aberdeen was found by friends after a fall from the sixth-floor of the hotel, before being pronounced dead by paramedics. His mother, Lel Kellighan, confirmed her son's tragic passing on social media. 'We are all absolutely broken,' she wrote, adding: 'Please allow us some time.' Gary Kelly, pictured right, died on Monday, July 21. He is pictured with his girlfriend, Louise Essery, who remembered him as an 'inspiring' partner In the days that followed, his friends and family spoke to the press to raise their concerns around safety on site. Blair Robertson, 25, told Press and Journal how excited his friend had been to see him as they met up at their San Antonio hotel. 'I'd never been abroad, and being there with my mates made it special,' he said. He said Mr Thomson was 'careful' with how much he drank. 'He wasn't reckless at all - that's why this is such a shock.' After a night out, the group returned to the hotel. When Mr Roberston woke up, he found Mr Thomson was missing. Mr Thomson had fallen from the sixth-floor balcony and was lying on the ground. Paramedics did not come for around half an hour, Mr Robertson said. The friends were taken to the hotel manager's office and allowed back to their room to pack up their belongings after about 90 minutes. 'We heard the jet washes from the ground cleaning the area where Evan died and it had only been 90 minutes or so since he was found. 'That was the worst thing for us to hear – how fast they tried to get things back to normal,' he said in a brave recollection in the days following the tragedy. The group were concerned that the balcony wall was only around 3ft high, according to the outlet. His sister, Teila, said a panel on or behind the wall would 'save upset from further families having to go through this unbelievable pain'. Friend Remi Duncan, 23, also expressed concerns about how the incident had been handled. 'It was disgusting. There was minimal respect for the situation, considering the music went back on soon after Evan had died. It puts a pit in your stomach.' James Shand, another friend, said: 'Seeing them post "are you all ready for the next event?" within hours of it happening was sickening.' He observed that it was not the first time somebody had died at the venue. On April 27, a 19-year-old Italian tourist died after falling from the fourth-floor of the hotel, having flown out the previous day. She was said to have gone out partying before returning home to find she was locked out, and reportedly tried to reach her room via a balcony from a shared area of the hotel. While climbing over, she lost her footing and fell. Three days later, a British woman collapsed and died in her room at the hotel. Paramedics and police rushed to the hotel and spent around 40 minutes trying to revive her, but she sadly died at the scene. The 33-year-old, who has not been named, reportedly had a cardioverter defibrillator implant, which is used to monitor the heartbeat and treat abnormal heart rhythms. In a statement regarding the deaths, Ibiza Rocks Hotel said: 'Following the tragic events that occurred this week due to causes beyond our control, IRG expresses its dismay and extends its utmost support to the families of the victims, thanking people for respect for their privacy in a situation of immeasurable pain.' Such incidents are sadly not uncommon. In August 2020, the hotel was praised for how it handled the untimely death of a young woman after she was found lifeless in her hotel room. Amy Connor, 23, was staying at the famous party destination in the resort town of San Antonio, with her sibling, Toni, 26, and cousin, Alison, when she passed away in her sleep. The group, from Coleraine in Northern Ireland, had been sunbathing before going back to their room to rest on August 20. 'We had been down to the pool and then came back up to the room for a while, so Amy got into the shower and then got into bed,' Toni recalled. It was unclear what had caused the unexpected death at the time, but Toni did commend how staff were towards the family. 'The hotel staff were incredible, we couldn't have asked for better,' she said at the time. 'They went as far as making us priority booking, they paid for our cases. I had given them my card to sort our travel home and I told them I didn't care what it cost just to get us home. 'They even offered to fly us via London but we would have had to stay overnight in London and they offered to pay for that hotel too but we just wanted to get home as quick as we could.' 'They packed our cases, they looked after us giving us food and water, you name it they brought it to us, I was so gob-smacked at their generosity in our time of need.' Toni remembered her sister as 'the kind of person if you met her once you'd definitely remember her'. 'She's so friendly and outgoing and she knows everyone, so we have been overwhelmed by the amount of people getting in touch since the news,' she said. Six years prior, Ibiza Rocks was at the centre of a probe into the actions of Spanish police after former rugby player Luke Rhoden died at the hotel. Luke Rhoden, 25, died on September 2, 2014. Police said he had fallen from a first-floor balcony. He then picked himself up before running through the hotel screaming 'someone's trying to kill me', a police source said. Officers from the Civil Guard restrained him and put him into an ambulance to be sedated. Rumours circulated on Twitter that Mr Rhoden had been beaten up by police before his death. A Civil Guard source said: 'Our officers do not beat people up. 'They restrained him for his own safety and helped him into the ambulance where he was sedated.' Paramedics spent 40 minutes trying to revive Mr Rhoden but he died at the scene. Norman Rhoden, his father, later called for an investigation after reading reports his son was 'excessively beaten' by police on social media. 'The feedback we have been getting on social media is suggesting something more untoward or sinister has happened as they were trying to contain him,' he said at the time, reported by the BBC. 'I'm not disagreeing that his behaviour may have been erratic, but what force have they used to subdue him? That's my concern, that's what I want to get to the bottom of.' An inquest jury in Bolton, Greater Manchester, found in 2016 that Mr Rhoden had died of asphyxiation caused by the excessive restraining methods adopted by the Guardia Civil and an adverse reaction to drug use. Among the evidence the jury saw was phone footage taken by former Thomson employee Annabelle Smith on the night of the tragedy. Coroner Kevin McLoughlin praised her and other independent witnesses for coming forward. Ms Smith only stopped filming after a Guardia Civil officer visited her apartment overlooking the death scene outside the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio's West End and warned her to switch the phone off or she would be next. On August 31, 2008, British holidaymaker Michael Robertson, 23, collapsed at the hotel and later died after taking Ecstasy. The young tourist sadly died at the Can Misses Hospital after suffering repeated heart failure.
