Little Dutch delight for Kaizer Chiefs
JOHANNESBURG - Grey clouds and rain proved an appropriate backdrop for Kaizer Chiefs as they completed a disappointing pre-season tour of the Netherlands by losing 2-1 to FC Twente. Chiefs, winners of a record 53 domestic trophies in South Africa, triumphed in only one of five friendly matches on a pre-season of the Netherlands. The Johannesburg outfit beat PEC Zwolle 1-0 but lost to Vitesse (2-1), Utrecht (4-0), NEC Nijmegen (1-0) and FC Twente. Chiefs hired Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi last season and he ended a 10-year trophy drought by winning the South African FA Cup, but they finished a disappointing ninth in the 16-club Premiership. In other football news, African club champions Pyramids have lost ace forward Ibrahim Adel. Adel, whose six goals help Pyramids become surprise winners of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League in only their second appearance, is moving to United Arab Emirates club Al Jazira. The 24-year-old missed the first leg of the final against Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa through injury, but recovered to come off the bench in the return match.

Grey clouds and rain proved an appropriate backdrop for South African club Kaizer Chiefs as they completed a disappointing pre-season tour of the Netherlands by losing 2-1 to FC Twente. In other football news, African club champions Pyramids have lost ace forward Ibrahim Adel and former Morocco star Ahmed Faras has died aged 78. Another Pyramids star, Democratic Republic of Congo-born forward Fiston Mayele, has returned to the Cairo club after a proposed move to Saudi Arabian club Al Fateh failed to materialise. Morocco Ahmed Faras, who captained Morocco to their lone Africa Cup of Nations title in 1976, has died aged 78 after a long illness, the national football federation announced. The forward scored 36 goals in 94 appearances for the national team and in 1975 became the first Moroccan to be voted African Player of the Year. Faras spent his entire 18-year club career with Mohammedia, helping them win the league, the national cup twice and the super cup. Sudan Record 30-time champions Al Hilal slipped one place to second in the Sudan Elite League play-offs after drawing 3-3 with Al Wadi Nyala on matchday five. Arch rivals Al Merrikh took over top spot by winning 2-1 against Al Mergani Kassala to boost chances of a top-two finish and qualification for the 2025/26 CAF Champions League. The play-offs are being staged in the military-controlled northeast of a country where an ongoing civil war, which began in April 2023, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions. Guinea French coach Hubert Velud is among the contenders to replace compatriot Michel Dussuyer as coach of struggling Guinea. Velud, 66, left Moroccan club FAR Rabat this year after a bizarre accident. Jumping to celebrate sealing a Champions League last-eight place, he fell awkwardly, was injured and could not work. Despite being able to call on star Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy, Guinea failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and lie fifth in a 2026 World Cup qualifying group. bur-str-dl/ea

Unbeaten Pirates look to spoil Pyramids' perfect home record
Published: Friday, 25 April 2025 Pyramids FC and Orlando Pirates are poised for a make-or-break showdown on Friday night in Cairo, with a coveted spot in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final at stake. After a tightly-contested 0-0 draw in the first leg at FNB Stadium, the tie remains delicately balanced heading into the second leg at the Cairo International Stadium. Both sides will now need to dig deep to break the deadlock and book their ticket to the final. The Egyptian outfit will look to continue their imperious home form. Pyramids have won all four of their CAF Champions League home fixtures this season, racking up 17 goals and conceding just three. They also boast an incredible 22-match unbeaten run at home in all competitions — a record that could prove crucial in such a high-pressure encounter. Yet they will need to find a way past a resilient Orlando Pirates defence that hasn't conceded in the competition since the group stages. The South Africans have been equally impressive on the road, with three wins and a draw in their four away games, and will arrive in Cairo brimming with belief. Pyramids' top scorer Ibrahim Adel, who has five goals in this season's Champions League, will be tasked with breaking Pirates' resistance. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers will lean on the creativity of Relebohile Mofokeng and the pace of Mohau Nkota — both of whom have scored three times this campaign. With both sides having struggled to find the net in recent continental outings, Friday's second leg may come down to a moment of brilliance or a defensive lapse. But one thing is certain — a blockbuster finale awaits in Cairo.

Preview: Pyramids FC out to confirm CL semi-final spot against FAR - Egyptian Football
Egyptian side Pyramids FC will be eager to secure their place in the CAF Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday when they visit Moroccan champions FAR in Meknes for the second leg of the competition's quarter-finals. Pyramids FC got an important first-leg advantage, having won 4-1 against the Moroccan side one week earlier in Cairo, in what seemed a one-sided affair. With this lucrative win, the Egyptian side's mission should not be difficult on Tuesday, as the hosts will be looking to compensate for their three-goal deficit. 'We are not qualified for the semi-finals yet,' Pyramids FC coach Krunoslav Jurcic stated at a news conference. 'We made a good result in Cairo, but FAR is a strong team and they still have a chance at home. We must be fully concentrated during the game to achieve our target.' The Croatian coach will rely on the good form of his players, especially the offensive trio of Ibrahim Adel, Fiston Mayele, and Mostafa Fathy. The Congolese striker and Adel each netted twice in the first leg, while Fathy posed a real threat to the Moroccan side throughout the full 90 minutes. However, they need to strengthen their defense, which appeared vulnerable during the first leg. The team's defense will face a tough challenge in the second leg, as the hosts will fight fiercely to overturn their first-leg deficit. Experienced defenders Aly Gabr, Ahmed Samy, and former international keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy will play crucial roles on Tuesday. However, the Egyptian side filed an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against the hosts after they were unable to find a training facility in Rabat during the two days leading up to their departure for Meknes. According to the club's statement, four training grounds refused to host the team's training, forcing them to use a pitch far from their hotel, requiring a 70-minute commute, and the pitch condition was reportedly poor. The coach canceled the training session due to concerns over potential injuries on the substandard ground. On the other hand, FAR will have a mountain to climb, needing to overturn their 4-1 loss from the first leg in Cairo. 'Our mission will be very difficult, but we will do our best to succeed,' said the team's coach Alexandre Santos. 'We made a lot of mistakes in the first leg, and we must avoid those in the second leg, as there is no room for error.' he concluded. FAR Rabat file complaint over ticket allocation after 4-1 defeat to Pyramids FC - Africa
Morocco's FAR Rabat filed an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against Egypt's Pyramids FC for violating tournament regulations by limiting ticket access to away supporters during their CAF Champions League quarterfinal match on Tuesday. The dispute comes after Pyramids claimed a commanding 4-1 first-leg victory at home. Congolese striker Fiston Mayele and winger Ibrahim Adel scored twice to give the Egyptian side a strong advantage ahead of the return leg in Casablanca on 8 April. In a statement published on the club's official Facebook page, FAR Rabat said Pyramids had allocated only 100 tickets to their traveling supporters — far below the CAF-mandated minimum of 5 percent of total stadium capacity, which the Moroccan side says should have amounted to at least 1,500 seats. FAR added that, following the 31 March technical meeting, they raised the issue with CAF and Pyramids management. While CAF reportedly issued a directive requesting that Pyramids increase the allocation to avoid potential security concerns, the Egyptian club only added another 100 tickets, leaving 'hundreds of Moroccan fans' outside the stadium, read the statement. 'These unacceptable practices… reflect a lack of respect for the rules and for the supporters who traveled from Morocco to support their team,' the club said, warning of 'serious security risks' and calling for measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents. The club emphasized defending the rights of their fans, adding that 'football is a joy for everyone, and all supporters should be able to cheer their teams in a fair and safe atmosphere.' Pyramids FC have not issued a public response to the complaint, and CAF has yet to comment on the matter.
