Gen Z's lack of concert etiquette is more dangerous than you think
If you're a millennial or above, chances are you've said something along the lines of 'Gen Z just doesn't understand concert etiquette' recently. I'm a Gen Z-er myself, and I know I've definitely said it. We live in a time where if you didn't film it to post on your Instagram stories, it didn't happen, and if you're not in the pit, you may as well stay at home. But, there comes a point where this desperation to be front and centre crosses the line into dangerous territory, and in the wake of a disaster which cost the lives of many, it's clear the time has come to set things straight. 7 We live in a time where if you didn't film it to post on your Instagram stories, it didn't happen, and if you're not in the pit, you may as well stay at home. Getty Images 'Central Cee [isn't] even out yet' With the release of the new documentary Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, we've all received a harsh reminder of what can happen when concerts go wrong. The annual festival, headlined by Travis Scott, tragically led to the deaths of 10 concertgoers in a crowd crush back in 2021. Though many parties have been blamed, including Scott and his tendency to encourage aggressive, riled up crowds, a recent show in Sydney has proven that it can truly happen anywhere. Last week, Central Cee took to the Qudos Bank Arena stage as part of his ''Can't Rush Greatness' tour. The British rapper, who you probably don't know, but who your teens likely would from his songs 'Doja' and 'Sprinter' – or from his very public online drama with ex-girlfriend Madeline Argy and Ice Spice – is known to have a young audience, debuting in the TikTok era. 7 With the release of the new documentary Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, we've all received a harsh reminder of what can happen when concerts go wrong. Getty Images 7 Though many parties have been blamed, including Scott and his tendency to encourage aggressive, riled up crowds, a recent show in Sydney has proven that it can truly happen anywhere. TikTok/@ But, what shocked some concertgoers last Wednesday was the behaviour from fans – even before Central Cee was on stage. Attendee Jen Hoang shared a video of the pit on TikTok, showing just this. 'No please no,' she wrote in the video. 'Central Cee [isn't] even out yet, I'm concerned…' In the video, you can see waves forming at the front of the pit, as young fans push one another to be as close to the barricade as possible. 'Did we not learn from Travis Scott?' Commenters on the post agreed that the environment felt unsafe as a result of the actions of other concertgoers. 'Girl it was literally bad, I had to reiterate mosh etiquette to at least 6 different people it was beyond disappointing,' shared one commenter. 7 Commenters on the post agreed that the environment felt unsafe as a result of the actions of other concertgoers. Getty Images 'I was at the second stage he was on and it was still so bad, the amount of people vomiting and getting dragged out was insane,' another person said. Others agreed that it was a bad sign, following what happened at Astroworld. 'Did we not learn from Travis Scott?' one person said. 'Not enough ppl fear crowd crushes and it shows,' said another. And some blamed it on the lack of etiquette of Gen Z-ers in general. 'Why does no one have any concert etiquette anymore?' one commenter asked. 'Everyone's for themselves/a couple of likes,' said another. What can we do? There are plenty of things you can tell your kids when it comes to safety in a mosh pit – particularly if they're seeing an artist like Travis Scott who's known for having more intense crowds. 7 'I was at the second stage he was on and it was still so bad, the amount of people vomiting and getting dragged out was insane,' another person said. Getty Images But, here are my favorite pieces of more general advice. Stay hydrated: One of the most important things to do at any concert is stay hydrated. In all the excitement and movement, it's easy to forget to drink water, or to think that you don't need it just because you don't want to hold onto it the whole night. If you can, buy a bottle of water, or take the water security offers you if you're near the barricade. What's worse than holding onto a water bottle is fainting or feeling sick due to dehydration, and missing the concert entirely. Camp sensibly: I feel as though I missed the boat entirely when it comes to camping, but I know many people who would happily line up for days if it meant they had a chance to graze fingers with a former One Direction member. If you are going to camp out, making sure you're eating properly, sleeping and drinking enough water is incredibly important. All those hours aren't worth it if you're feeling weak and exhausted once you get into the venue. 7 Ambulance is seen in the crowd during rap star Travis Scott's Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas. via REUTERS 7 One of the most important things to do at any concert is stay hydrated. @Tre5pix via REUTERS Dress appropriately: I know your thick velvet cape matches Taylor Swift's in the 'Evermore' set perfectly. I totally understand why you'd want to wear platform heels to Sabrina Carpenter (if she ever releases Australian tour dates). But, when you're going to be standing in a pit the whole night, sometimes the aesthetic isn't worth it. Wearing uncomfortable, heavy or hot clothing is only going to harm you if things start to go awry. Make sure your phone is charged: This one is tricky because we all want to record at least part of the show! If you know an artist is going to perform a song in full, my tip is to record the second chorus instead of the first – and only that chorus – because it saves your battery, there will be fewer phones in the way of your shot, and you're not annoying the people around you. I also make sure I have at least 50% battery left at the end of a concert just in case of an emergency – if this means you need to bring a charger in your bag, do that! Don't push: My friends know that I have been one to put my elbows out and yell 'I'm just getting to my friends!' in an effort to get closer to the front. If there's room, there's no harm in finding those gaps and moving forward. But, if it's already looking squishy, you don't want to be there. Get out if you feel unsafe: There's no shame in leaving a pit or standing further back if the front is feeling a little bit much. Even if I stay up front the entire time, I like to drift towards the back during the encore to beat the crowds – but maybe that's just a sign I've entered my mid-20s.

'Really good at what we do': Sauce Gardner opens up about Ice Spice rumors, admits they share a rare bond despite backlash
Sauce Gardner opens up on Ice Spice connection (Getty Images) New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner has been making headlines not just for his plays on the field, but also for his unexpected bond with rapper Ice Spice. The NFL star recently gave fans a rare glimpse into their connection, revealing how the two met and what keeps them close — even if he's keeping the full details under wraps. Sauce Gardner hints at deep connection with Ice Spice amid romance buzz In an interview with TMZ Sports, Sauce Gardner disclosed that his first meeting with Ice Spice happened in April 2024 during a shoot for The Shop, LeBron James' popular YouTube series. That episode featured a star-studded panel, including Gardner, Ice Spice, LeBron, Travis Hunter, Julio Rodríguez, and Chad Johnson. The setting proved to be more than just a discussion hub — it marked the beginning of a surprising connection between the athlete and the rapper. Gardner recounted, 'I think we met at The Shop, the little interview that we did with LeBron and Trav. That's where we definitely first seen each other in person.' While that encounter seemed casual, it sparked something that continued off-camera. LeBron, Travis Scott, Ice Spice, Ochocinco, Sauce Gardner and J-Rod on Awards & Snubs | The Shop S7 Since then, the two have been spotted together several times, fueling speculation that there might be more than just friendship between them. From being seen out in public since February to posting a mirror selfie together on Instagram in April — which fans took as an unofficial relationship announcement — the signs were hard to miss. The pair even showed up at Adin Ross' Brand Kickboxing event, where they were caught on the kiss cam, though they playfully dodged the moment, further adding intrigue. When asked if the rumors about them dating were true, Gardner chose to keep things low-key, telling TMZ, 'We cool.' Pressed for clarity, he added, 'It's still the same for real. I ain't trying to speak too much on it.' But what he did share gave some insight into their bond. 'We just be having a good time,' he said. 'Two young individuals. She's from New York, I play in New York. She's talented, real talented at what she do — same for me. Two people that get hated on that's really good at what we do, so we've got a lot in common.' Despite coming from different worlds — one built on beats and rhymes, the other on tackles and interceptions — it seems Gardner and Ice Spice connect through their shared experiences, fame, and hustle. The 23-year-old NFL standout, who notched 49 tackles and nine passes defended last season, appears to be navigating both career pressure and newfound attention off the field with ease. Whether they're just 'cool' or something more, one thing's clear — their relationship, whatever shape it takes, started thanks to an unexpected matchmaker: LeBron James. Sauce Gardner opens up on how LeBron James played role in him meeting Ice Spice
LeBron James, even if unintentionally, helped play the role of matchmaker for Sauce Gardner's rumored relationship with rapper Ice Spice, the Jets cornerback told TMZ. Gardner appeared on an April 2024 episode of 'The Shop' — a podcast featuring James — alongside rapper Travis Scott, former NFL wideout Chad Ochocinco and star Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez, and Gardner told the outlet he believes that's when the couple met in person for the first time. They seemingly became Instagram official just over one year later in a post shared by Ice Spice with her and Gardner posing in front of a bathroom mirror. AP While Gardner told TMZ that he wasn't 'trying to speak too much on it' when approached in Los Angeles, he did acknowledge that he and the rapper are 'cool' — and proceeded to reveal a bit about their relationship. 'We just be having a good time,' Gardner told the outlet. 'Two young individuals, you know. She from New York. I play in New York. She talented, real talented, when it come to what she do. Same thing for me. Two people that get hated on that's really good at what we do, so we got a lot in common. We cool.' Advertisement 3 LeBron James is pictured at Fanatics Fest on June 21. Getty Images Before Ice Spice's post, the duo had been spotted out in public on different occasions, and Gardner appeared to tease the relationship earlier in April by sharing a photo on Instagram that showed them standing next to a car in New York City. When they attended a Knicks playoff game at the Garden in May, they received a loud ovation from fans in attendance as they watched the Knicks close out their second-round series against the Celtics. Gardner, 24, will enter the 2025 campaign off a rough season and is entering the last year of his rookie deal, but he still attended the Jets' mandatory minicamp instead of holding out, getting fined and attempting to make a contract statement. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 'I just wanted to show my teammates and the coaches how much I'm bought into this,' Gardner told reporters on June 12. 'I want to win. I want to be a part of changing the organization.' He earned consecutive First-Team All-Pro appearances in his first two NFL seasons — as well as winning Defensive Rookie of the Year and securing a pair of Pro Bowl spots — but failed to even make the Pro Bowl last year.

Ice Spice's NFL star boyfriend reveals which NBA superstar played matchmaker
New York Jets star Sauce Gardner has revealed that NBA legend LeBron James helped play matchmaker with his rapper girlfriend Ice Spice. Ice Spice and Gardner hard launched their relationship back in April with a bathroom selfie before appearing together courtside at a New York Knicks playoff game against the Boston Celtics. The duo first met in April 2024 however during a taping of James' 'The Shop' that co-starred Gardner, Ice Spice, fellow rapper Travis Scott, and Chad Johnson, per TMZ. Gardner and Ice Spice had been romantically linked for months prior to their official announcement, with the pair staying in touch since being in James' vicinity. Ice Spice has been associated with the sports world since before meeting Gardner, as a member of Taylor Swift 's squad. Ice Spice has been in attendance at the last two Super Bowls, sitting next to Swift as she watched boyfriend Travis Kelce compete. Gardner is one of the most lauded defensive backs in the NFL with the Jets ever since coming out of college at Cincinnati. Yet, Gardner has yet to taste postseason success in New York, with hopes of that trend changing this season with new head coach Aaron Glenn. Gardner is expected to receive a huge contract over the next few seasons, as his rookie deal is set to expire at the conclusion of 2026. Ice Spice and Gardner were both born in the year 2000, with the NFL star being coy on talking about his relationship with the rapper. Yet, he did speak on her being from New York and him having a professional career in the Big Apple bringing them closer. That happiness started due to James bringing the pair together for a talk show.

The 1975's Glastonbury glory is overshadowed by Matty Healy's problematic past
Glastonbury 2025 is well and truly underway with The 1975, Oliva Rodrigo and Neil Young headlining this weekend's festival. However, as soon as the official lineup was announced, fans who had previously been begging for an indie or rock band to top the bill were disappointed by The 1975's spot on the bill heading tonight – Friday, June. 27. The band has been plagued by the behaviour of frontman Matty Healy, who has been on an incredibly problematic spree for the past decade. From racist comments about rapper Ice Spice to a supposedly satirical 'Nazi salute' on stage, after which he thanked Kanye, Matty has been a menace. While Matty has apologised for the 'performance art' that went too far, many have not forgiven him, judging by complaints on social media. It's unfortunate for the rest of the band — consisting of Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel — as their music headlining the Pyramid stage tonight is exactly what Glastonbury needed. For years, Matty has been a sore topic of conversation for fans, as his so-called activism seemed to harm more than it helped. January 2023 marked the start of a particularly public string of bizarre and offensive moves from the Sound hitmaker. During a rendition of Love It If We Made It, Matty appeared to do a Nazi salute on stage in response to Kanye West's increased antisemitic behaviour. He also called Ye a 'hero', which prompted loud boos from his own audience before he sang: 'Thank you Kanye, very cool!' The Ye stunt is believed to have been a satirical dig and not an honest endorsement but regardless of his intentions, Matty was widely slammed over the stunt but has never publicly apologised or addressed the situation. While on The Adam Friedland Show podcast a month later, he said: 'Obviously someone who is dealing with grief and has mental health issues, but that's not an excuse to do, like, antisemitism.' In the same episode, he also joked about sliding into Ice Spice's DMs (to no avail) before the hosts began making fun of her ethnicity — she is Dominican and Nigerian. Matty seemed to encourage the pair, who were imitating accents including Chinese, Hawaiian, and Japanese at Ice Spice's expense. He publicly apologised on stage afterwards, with the Karma hitmaker saying later that she received multiple apologies in private from him too. Then came the on-stage kiss in Malaysia, which resulted in a lawsuit and a festival getting shut down. When performing in Kuala Lumpur, he kissed bassist Ross MacDonald, which resulted in a brief imprisonment for the band due to laws around same-sex relationships. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video However, his apparent LGBTQ+ activism was slammed by many local activists who claimed Matty's drinking and disorderly behaviour before the kiss had been detrimental to their cause. The lawsuit was subsequently dismissed with the band's lawyer arguing:' The allegations of breaches of a duty of care are not breaches of a duty of care at all. They are breaches of Malaysian statutes and guidelines. That is why this claim is completely artificial against my clients.' Then there are feuds with other artists and no, we don't mean his apparent whirlwind romance and split with Taylor Swift. Azealia Banks filed a cease and desist against the frontman to the tune of $1,000,000 after he threatened to 'slap' her in a now-deleted post. He apologised for the post in December 2024 before insisting his outbursts on the platform come during 'manic episodes'. It's interesting that Glastonbury organisers chose The 1975 as headliners after Rina Sawayama called out the star – who owns the record label she's signed to – for 'microaggressions' while performing at Worthy Farm. She took issue with Matty owning her masters and has since said she 'feels really trapped' by her Dirty Hit Records deal and 'can't release another album under my current conditions'. These are just the biggest issues, he has said numerous problematic things, including randomly calling Harry Styles a 'queerbaiter'. Matty's behaviour, particularly over the past two years, has been a relentless barrage of 'performative art' and 'satire' that has failed to land as anything other than racism and idiocy. Also, there's the weird raw meat antics but the less said about that, the better. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Matty has, at almost every turn, apologised or addressed his problematic behaviour once called out by fans. During the worst of his behaviour, the band decided to go on hiatus to let things calm down without any more on stage debacles. Most recently, he replied to a fan on The 1975 subreddit about the 'performance art' claims he made. In a (rare) self reflective statement, the Robbers singer replied: 'I really appreciate your thoughts. But for clarity, I am sincerely sorry for what I said and I will not do anything like that again. 'I'm gonna stay more consistent in my life choices and be more of an adult. I have to take accountability for what I said as real person not an artist. 'This is not performance art. I will make sure any 'art' I make is titled and documented as such I'm not willing to hurt people in the pursuit of artistic statements.' He added he 'regrets having done that' and signed off with 'huge love'. This year, Matty has been incredibly quiet on any controversy and kept to himself so we will just have to see what Glastonbury 2025 brings. Matty's behaviour aside, The 1975 are a classic headliner choice for Glastonbury; a British band with huge tunes spanning years. The 1975 embodies that early to mid-2010s indie guitar band moment, with throwback hits like Chocolate, Sex, and Robbers all staples of the era. They're not stuck in the past though, with 2022's About You having a viral moment ahead of their sold out tour last year. In sheer numbers, the band has four Brit Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, two Grammy nominations and were dubbed 'Band of the Decade' by NME in 2020. Let's not forget how influential The 1975 actually is, with their synth-pop-rock-blended sound meeting new wave, softer emo lyrics as that Fall Out Boy era began to fade. As for their space on the Glastonbury lineup: While Olivia Rodrigo is pulling in a younger, pop audience (a la Dua Lipa), Neil Young and Rod Stewart are easy crowd-pleasers following Paul McCartney's example. The 1975 is the perfect answer for Glasto-goers in their late 20s to mid 30s, who will instinctively recognise the big hits while lesser known songs are fairly inoffensive and danceable. Like them or loathe them, The 1975 and Matty's distinctive vocals defined a generation and they're still making hits — exactly what a Glastonbury headliner should be doing. More Trending It's a shame that the musical achievements of this world-class British band are being overshadowed by the actions of a frontman desperate to be seen as controversial. The 1975 will undoubtedly put on a good show later this evening, as long as Denise Welch's misguided son stays on his best behaviour. A version of this article was first published on March 7, 2025.
