Charli XCX hits back at 'fraud' claims after Glastonbury set criticised
Charli XCX has hit back at claims she is a "fraud" after her Glastonbury Festival headline set was heavily criticised. The Apple singer was headlining the Other stage Saturday evening, with a packed out crowd there to sing and dance with her. However, Charli came under criticism for her set, with many convinced she was miming or using autotune. She referenced the "boomer vibe" comments on her set in a string of Twitter posts. She wrote on X: "Like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a 'real artist' is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep xx "But to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable." She then added: "really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my glastonbury performance. it's super fascinating to me," before thanking those who gave her five star reviews. During her big set, Charli XCX sang her song with Icona Pop, I Love It, as well her hit viral song Apple, which Gracie Abrams acted as the Apple Girl for and danced the TikTok routine. The singer was accused by fans of miming during her performance, where she headlined the Other stage on Saturday night, whilst Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts performed on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage. At the same time, the Scissors Sisters were performing on the Woodsies stage - and the venue had to be shut down as there were too many people there. Taking to Twitter/X, some fans blasted the singer. One wrote: "Oh ffs can't watch Scissor Sisters and Charli XCX is bloody dreadful. Could literally be any random person miming. WTF for a Glastonbury Saturday night, disappointing." Another added: "Predictable but shame nonetheless that charli xcx can't sing live #Glastonbury2025 #charlixcx FAKE." And a third said: "Charli xcx Embarressing [sic]that, turning up to walk around stage pretending to sing…" Whilst some weren't keen on her set, others loved it. "Charli xcx the icon you are #Glastonbury2025," one wrote, whilst a second added: "Charli xcx killing it." A third penned: "Charli xcx is taking over Glasto, she's bloody amazing."

Charli XCX took to the stage to headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival last night, Saturday June 28. Charli XCX stunned Glastonbury crowds with her headline slot last night, but fans are fuming over one vital element missing from her performance. The British pop sensation began sharing music on MySpace in 2008, and swiftly became a staple of London rave culture. Charli XCX hit number one in the UK charts in 2012 with Icona Pop collaboration 'I Love It', and her success soared following the hit 'Fancy' with Iggy Azalea in 2014. But last year, Charli rose to complete global stardom with her hit album Brat. The record topped the charts in the UK, Ireland, and Australia, and made an impressive debut at number three on the Billboard 200. Charli's 2024 album also led to eight Grammy nominations at the 67th annual awards, including Album of the Year. She bagged three wins - Best Dance Pop Recording for "Von Dutch", Best Dance/Electronic Album, and Best Recording Package. Charli's fiancé, George Daniel of The 1975, who also topped the bill at Glasto on Friday, was amongst the excited festival-goers. The excitement buzzed amid speculation that Lorde would grace the stage with Charli to perform their collaboration 'Girl, so confusing' , reports the Manchester Evening News. But Lorde's surprise gig at Woodies Stage at 11.30am meant she didn't join Charli XCX, leading to some disappointed fans voicing their feelings online. On X, @ctphonehomee expressed dismay: "So lorde not being here is atrocious??" and @V4MPIRESHAWTY queried: "WHERE IS LORDE". One fan, @begforloves, expressed their surprise: "Now why would Lorde not be there", while @mattyscruff chimed in with: "not the crowd screaming bc they assumed lorde was coming out". @allyallonsy01 echoed the sentiment, stating: "I was hoping lorde was gonna come out". Lorde and Charli XCX broke the internet when the long feuding stars decided to work out their differenced through the song 'Girl, so confusing' which tackles the complexities of female friendship and girlhood. Despite Lorde's disappointing absence from her set, the Glastonbury crowds lapped up the star's energetic performance. But some viewers at home accused Charli of miming rather than singing live. 'It's summertime and I was thinking about last summer – did anyone have a Brat summer?' she said. Born in Cambridge in 1992 the singer is the only child of a mother of Indian descent and a Scottish father. She began posting her songs on Myspace as a teenager before performing at raves and later being signed. In 2013, she released her major-label debut album True Romance, after several singles which did not chart. She broke through into the mainstream after featuring on Icona Pop's 2012 hit I Love It, which went to number one in the UK. She gained further attention after her 2014 collaboration with Australian singer Iggy Azalea on Fancy, which was nominated for two Grammy awards: record of the year and best pop duo/group performance. Her second album, 2014's Sucker, featured the top 10 hit Boom Clap and reached number 15 in the UK album charts. In 2019 she starred in the documentary I'm With The Band: Nasty Cherry, in which she put together a girl band that included model Gabriella Bechtel, known professionally as Gabbriette, who is engaged to The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. The band, who headlined Glastonbury on Friday, also features drummer George Daniel, who is engaged to Charli XCX. Also in 2019, she released her album Charli and followed it up with 2020's Mercury Prize-nominated How I'm Feeling Now, which landed at 33 in the UK albums chart. In 2021, she expressed her grief at the death of her friend and long-time collaborator Sophie, whom she has cited as a major influence and paid tribute to during an acceptance speech at the Brit Awards earlier in the year. The singer's first number one in the albums chart came with her fifth LP, Crash, which was released in 2022 and featured collaborations with the likes of Rina Sawayama and Caroline Polachek. The artist, known for her championing of experimental hyper pop, was also among the artists to feature on the Barbie movie soundtrack, and her song Speed Drive reached number nine in the UK chart. The latest addition to her catalogue, which saw the world embrace the 'brat summer' cultural movement, propelled the singer to stratospheric heights. The trend promoted sultry style choices, including a lot of neon green in honour of the album's cover. She followed her album with a remixed version featuring collaborations with the likes of Lorde, Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande, Bon Iver and Kesha. She also released a Guess remix with Eilish which soared to number one on the UK singles chart in August 2024. During an appearance on Saturday Night Live, she defined the meaning of Brat and said: 'So many people have asked me, what is brat, and honestly, it's just like an attitude, it's a vibe.' The singer has said the idea of letting Brat go is 'hard' and as she finished her performance at Lido Festival on June 14 a message on stage told fans: 'It wasn't just a summer thing. It's a forever thing. Please don't let it be over.'
