Man charged over vandalism of National Holocaust Monument

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has charged a man for the vandalism earlier this month of the National Holocaust Monument. On Friday afternoon, the police service announced a 46-year-old man has been accused of mischief to a war memorial, mischief exceeding $5,000 and harassment by threatening conduct. Police did not name the man. The charges stem from an incident on June 9 when the concrete memorial on the Kichi Zibi Mikan near Lebreton Flats was found splashed with red paint, including the words "feed me" painted in capital letters. The slogan appeared to be a reference to Gaza, which the United Nations had recently described as the "hungriest place on Earth." Iddo Moed, Israel's ambassador to Canada, decried the vandalism as antisemitic. The accused man is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.

Israel's ambassador to Canada calls on G7 leaders to act on Iran threat

OTTAWA — As leaders of the G7 nations gather in southern Alberta this week, Israel is calling on them to increase pressure on Iran. In a weekend interview with the Toronto Sun, Israel's ambassador to Canada, Iddo Moed, said a nuclear-armed Iran poses a dire threat to the entire world, not just Israel. 'The cost of this war, in terms of the home front, is huge,' he said. 'Iran has no regard for international law, they hit civilian infrastructure they can hit. That's really concerning, because their heavy missiles cause enormous damage.' On Friday, Israel attacked more than a dozen sites in Iran as part of 'Operation Rising Lion.' The strikes — the largest the Islamic theocracy has sustained since the Iran-Iraq war — were meant to surgically dismantle Iran's nuclear weapons program and kill key members of its military. That sparked retaliatory ballistic missile and drone barrages from Iran — many of which were intercepted by the American and Jordanian military — but saw several falling on civilian neighbourhoods across Tel Aviv and other areas deliberately targeted by Iran. As of Monday, Israel's death toll from the Iranian counterattack sits at 24, with nearly 600 wounded. Canada's support for Gaza UN Vote undermines peace: Jewish groups Canada's Israel statement garners Hamas praise, condemnation from Jewish, Israeli groups With Iran's nuclear program developing delivery vehicles capable of reaching Europe or even North America, and with Iran supporting violent anti-Israel activists and protests across this continent and around the world, Moed said Iran is truly a global threat. 'This is why we all have to come together, and why we also call on the G7 to acknowledge this threat and make sure Iran does not attain its goals,' he said. 'It is incumbent on the international community to do whatever it takes to ensure Iran doesn't execute its murderous plan against Israel and destabilize the region. This is the 11th hour.' Arsen Ostrovsky, leading human rights attorney and CEO of the International Legal Forum, told the Sun that the short-term unrest is necessary to ensure long-term stability in the region. 'Israel's strike was a necessary and lawful act of preemptive self-defense against a regime that has long threatened genocide, armed terror proxies across the region, and was on the verge of obtaining nuclear warheads,' he said. 'Far from destabilizing the region, Israel's action directly confronts the greatest source of instability: the Iranian regime itself. By degrading Tehran's nuclear and mass weapon capabilities, Israel has advanced the cause of long-term regional and global security.' Ostrovsky said the G7 needs to present a clear and united front backing Israel. 'In striking Iran, Israel was not acting alone — but in defence of the West and the very nations and interests that the G7 represents,' he said. 'The leaders must unequivocally affirm Israel's right to self-defence, declare that Iran will never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, provide Israel with whatever support it needs to finish the job, and impose coordinated sanctions to cripple Tehran's nuclear and terror networks.' bpassifiume@ X: @bryanpassifiume

Israeli ambassador calls on Canada to step up after aid workers killed by Hamas

"These workers weren't soldiers, they were trying to feed people," Ambassador Iddo Moed said A Palestinian carries a bag containing food and humanitarian aid delivered by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a U.S.-backed organization, in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. Create Account In a statement released Thursday, Amb. Iddo Moed called on Canada to show leadership and work towards real peace in the Middle East in the wake of the killings, which saw eight Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid workers killed by Hamas terrorists. 'These workers weren't soldiers, they were trying to feed people,' Moed said in his statement. 'One should expect humanitarian aid to relieve suffering — not to be hijacked by terrorists and turned into a weapon of war. This horrific attack underscores why protecting aid from Hamas's systematic exploitation isn't optional, it's essential.' Hamas regularly diverts Israeli aid and food shipments coming into Gaza, warehousing and selling the supplies to fund their terror campaign while Gazan men, women and children starve. Read More On May 29, hungry Palestinians stormed a food warehouse in Deir Al-Balah that was full of food and supplies meant to feed civilians. The US-backed GHF, meant to act as a means to distributing aid outside of UN control, was denounced by Hamas, labelling them 'agents of occupation' and warning civilians that anybody caught accepting food from them 'would pay the price.' The GHF began its aid program on May 26. 'For months, Israel has worked with international partners to create new humanitarian routes that bypass Hamas control and ensure food, medicine, and essential supplies reach civilians directly,' Moed said. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'These efforts have been necessary because, according to newly revealed IDF intelligence, Hamas has diverted up to 25% of shipments for its fighters, resold restricted goods at inflated prices, extorted 'protection fees' from local businesses, and manipulated aid channels to fund terrorism.' While terrorists murder aid workers, Canada's silence isn't neutrality, the ambassador said, it's complicity. From Lester B. Pearson's vision for peacekeeping to today's G7 commitments, Canada's voice carries moral weight,' he said. 'We call on Canada to step up — not just in words, but through actions that defend human dignity, confront terror, and support genuine peace for all people of the region — Jews, Arabs, Christians, Druze, and others.' bpassifiume@ X: @bryanpassifiume World Toronto Blue Jays World Toronto & GTA Celebrity
