Two killed and at least 16 injured in fresh Russian aerial attack on Kyiv — Novaya Gazeta Europe
Two people were killed and at least 16 more were injured in a fresh Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv overnight, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Thursday. According to Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the attack damaged 'residential, medical, educational, commercial and transport infrastructure' in the city, killing a 68-year-old woman and a 22-year-old police corporal. Around 400 rescue workers had been deployed in the aftermath of the strikes, Klymenko said, with the number of casualties expected to rise. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the outpatient clinic of a medical facility had been 'almost completely destroyed' in the attack, with falling drone debris causing fires at several locations, including on the top floor of a residential building. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched 18 missiles and around 400 drones — including 200 Iranian-made Shahed attack drones — at six regions of the country overnight, with Kyiv the main target of what he called a 'massive combined strike that lasted nearly 10 hours'. 'This is a clear escalation of terror by Russia — hundreds of Shaheds every night, constant strikes, and massive attacks on Ukrainian cities', Zelensky wrote on X, adding that Ukraine needed 'quicker action' from its partners in supplying the weapons it needed to defend itself against Russian strikes. Russia has ramped up its aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, with barrages of several hundred drones becoming increasingly common. On Wednesday, Russia launched its largest single airstrike of the war so far, attacking Ukraine with 728 drones, seven cruise missiles and six Kinzhal ballistic missiles. The main target of the attack was the city of Lutsk in the Volyn region of northwestern Ukraine, authorities said, though no casualties were reported.

Deadly new Russian drone and missile attack hits Kyiv
A massive overnight Russian attack has hit Ukraine's capital Kyiv, killing at least two people and injuring 16, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The attack involved 18 missiles and about 400 drones, primarily targeting the capital, Zelensky added. Authorities in Kyiv said drone wreckage hit the roof of a residential building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district and fires burned across the city. Residents' sleep was interrupted for three hours as drones and missiles converged on the capital, air defences went into action and explosions reverberated. Footage on social media, not yet verified by the BBC, showed blasts in the night sky. It followed what Ukraine described as the largest Russian aerial attack on Tuesday night, when 728 drones and 13 cruise or ballistic missiles struck cities across the country. In the early hours of Thursday morning, Ukraine's police reported that Russian drone strikes had hit eight districts in Kyiv. "Residential buildings, vehicles, warehouses, office and non-residential buildings are burning," administration head Tymur Tkachenko said in a post on Telegram. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed that a 68-year-old woman and a 22-year-old police officer at a metro station had been killed. In Kyiv's Podilsky district, a primary healthcare centre was "almost completely destroyed", Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said. City residents were urged to shelter until the air raid siren was lifted, and also close windows when they returned to their homes because there was a "lot of smoke" in Kyiv. Overnight, Ukraine's air force reported a threat of Russian drone attacks in a number of regions. It was not immediately clear whether there were any casualties outside Kyiv. Russia's military has not commented on the reported latest attack. In other developments: Ukraine's emergency service DSNS said late on Wednesday that three people had been killed in a Russian air strike in the town of Kostiantynivka - close to the front line in eastern Ukraine The US resumed sending some weapons to Ukraine, Reuters reported late on Wednesday, days after it halted shipments of some critical air defence arms "Russia is obviously stepping up terror," Zelensky said. "It is necessary to be faster with sanctions and pressure Russia so that it feels the outcomes of its own terror. Our partners need to act faster investing in weapons production and developing tech." He said that on Thursday, he would be speaking to partners about additional financing for producing interceptor drones and air defence supplies. The latest attack underlines just how remote the prospects of a diplomatic breakthrough seem to have become. On Wednesday, Germany's Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said diplomacy had been exhausted. The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, spoke in similar terms earlier in the week. And US President Donald Trump seems increasingly impatient with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. "We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth," Trump told reporters on Tuesday. "He's very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless." Peskov said Moscow was "pretty calm about this. Trump's way of talking is generally quite harsh, the phrases he uses". The two leaders have been in regular contact, but this has so far failed to translate into tangible steps towards a ceasefire in Ukraine - something Trump once said he would be able to achieve in a day. Trump has been threatening sanctions on Russia since taking office in January but has so far not imposed any. A bipartisan bill is working its way through Congress which would penalise countries such as China and India that continue to buy Russian oil and gas. Trump said he might support it. The focus among Kyiv's allies has now shifted back to how to protect Ukraine and punish Russia, with Europe working on a new package of sanctions. All this is likely to be discussed in Rome, where a two-day conference attended by delegates from 77 countries on Ukraine's recovery is due to start on Thursday. With Russia's drone attacks on Ukraine increasing in frequency and scale, renewed attention on how to protect Ukraine's airspace could also be on the agenda. Later on Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of a summit in Malaysia. Russian attacks on Kyiv kill 7 and injure dozens, says Ukraine
Ukrainian rescuers led people to safety from burning buildings and structures in the dark. (Ukrainian Emergency Service/AP pic) KYIV : Russian drone and missile attacks in and around Kyiv overnight killed seven people, injured dozens, sparked fires in residential areas and damaged the entrance to a metro station bomb shelter, Ukrainian officials said today. At least six people were killed in Kyiv's busy Shevchenkivskyi district where an entire section of a residential high-rise building was destroyed, Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app. Four children were among 25 people wounded in the attack, he added. 'The Russians' style is unchanged – to hit where there may be people,' Tkachenko said. 'Residential buildings, exits from shelters – this is the Russian style.' Moscow has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as talks to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, yielded few results. Both sides deny targeting civilians, but thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict – the vast majority of them Ukrainian. Russia has not commented on the latest attacks. Interior minister Ihor Klymenko said people could still be under the rubble after the overnight attacks caused damage in six of the city's 10 districts. 'To be honest, it wasn't like I got scared. It was more like my life was frozen,' said a 75-year-old local resident who only gave her first name, Liudmyla. 'You're frozen, looking at all of it and thinking about how you will live.' UK visit Ukraine's air force said it downed 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles launched by Russia in the attack on four Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would discuss the country's defence and additional pressure on Russia to end such strikes during his visit to Britain. Photos posted by Ukraine's state emergency service showed rescuers leading people to safety from buildings and structures on fire in the dark. An entrance to the metro station in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district was also damaged, along with an adjacent bus stop, officials said. Kyiv's deep metro stations have been used throughout the war as some of the city's safest bomb shelters. Kyiv Polytechnic Institute said the attack damaged its sports complex, several academic buildings and four dormitories. In the broader Kyiv region that surrounds the Ukrainian capital, a 68-year-old woman was killed and at least eight people were injured, officials said. Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks on Kyiv last week, when hundreds of drones killed 28 people and injured more than 150.

Russian attacks on Kyiv kill 8 and injure dozens, Ukraine says
Waves of Russian drones and missiles in and around Kyiv overnight killed eight people, lit up the night sky with fires in residential areas and damaged the entrance to a metro station bomb shelter, Ukrainian officials said on Monday. Rescue workers pulled bodies from the rubble of an apartment block in Kyiv's busy Shevchenkivskyi district, less than a kilometre from the US embassy. At least seven people died in the district, the interior ministry said. At least 34 people including four children were wounded in the attacks on Kyiv, the emergencies service said. Ukraine's air force said it downed 339 of 352 drones and 15 of 16 missiles launched by Russia in the attack on four Ukrainian regions. Moscow has stepped up drone and missile strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in recent weeks as talks to end the war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, yielded few results. Monday's strike comes a day before NATO's annual summit is held in The Hague and as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Britain to discuss defence. Thousands of civilians have been killed in the conflict - the vast majority of them Ukrainian - although both sides deny targeting them. Russia has not commented on the latest attacks. More deaths in Kyiv as Russia hits civilian infrastructure
Russia unleashed its latest missile and drone strike on Kyiv, killing at least seven people, as Moscow steps up its aerial attacks on civilian infrastructure. A section of a residential building collapsed after it was hit, and more than 30 people were injured across the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram on Monday morning. Recovery work continues and more casualties are likely trapped in the rubble, according to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. Casualties were reported in other Ukrainian regions which faced Russian attacks overnight. "Russia has demonstrated that the term 'civilian object' doesn't exist for them," Klymenko said on Telegram. The overnight strikes by President Vladimir Putin's forces followed a similar pattern to last week's assault that killed 27 people in Ukraine. The country was attacked by 352 strike drones and 16 ballistic and cruise missiles into Monday, with Kyiv and the surrounding region the main target, according to Ukraine's military. One of the capital's subway entry points was damaged, the city administration said on Telegram. Subway stations are used as shelters during air raids. In total, 339 drones and 15 missiles were shot down or jammed, according to Ukraine's Air Defense. The latest strikes on Kyiv come amid a renewed effort by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to ensure further support from Western allies, as the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel climbs further up their agenda. The Ukrainian leader, who is expected to attend the NATO summit in The Hague this week, made a surprise visit to the U.K. on Monday, where he called for renewed pressure on Russia. He has already called on western allies to allocate 0.25% of their GDP to support Ukraine's defense industry next year. At the same time, his country has amassed $43 billion to ramp up production and to buy drones, artillery, and other weapons. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who is in Brussels for meeting of EU foreign ministers, also urged partners to impose tough sanctions, including secondary restrictions, which would "strike Russian economy and oil revenues." With all eyes on the Middle East, Sybiha and Zelenskyy have both sought to contrast Russia's "performative condemnation" and "uproar" about U.S. and Israeli air strikes on its ally Iran with its ongoing commitment to subjugating Ukraine through its own bombing campaign against cities. "Today Moscow is silent after the Russian army carried out a cynical strike using Iranian Shahed drones and missiles against civilian infrastructure in Kyiv," said the Ukrainian President in a post on X. ----------- -With assistance from Alan Crawford.
