A man is injured in a struggle with an escaped lion in southern Turkey

ISTANBUL (AP) — A farmer was seriously injured when he was attacked by a lion that had escaped a zoo in southern Turkey on Sunday, local media reported. The lion was later shot dead. The male lion, named Zeus, escaped his cage at Land of Lions in Manavgat, a resort city on the Mediterranean coast, in the early hours, the private Demiroren News Agency said. A few hours later, he attacked the 53-year-old man, who was sleeping outdoors after watering pistachio trees. 'I heard a whispering sound. When I lifted the blanket, the lion fell on me,' Suleyman Kir told the agency. 'We struggled and fought. ... I grabbed his neck and squeezed. At that moment, he ran off a little.' The Ilhas News Agency reported that police officers searching for the lion heard the noise of the struggle and scared it off by shooting into the air. Ilhas also showed footage of the lion strolling outside homes before disappearing into scrubland. Kir was hospitalized with wounds to his head, shoulder and legs. Police teams and drones found the lion in a nearby wooded area. Land of Lions' website boasts that the park holds 'the world's largest lion family' of more than 30 animals. It also contains tigers, bears and wolves. It wasn't clear how the lion escaped but an investigation has been launched. The zoo did not comment on Sunday. Error! Trisha Bijwe was enjoying the attraction during a vacation with her parents when things suddenly went wrong. Whilst on the ride, the cable snapped and saw her plunge from 50ft height in India. She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following the catastophic accident on Sunday, June 8. The little girl endured several fractures to her leg. Her injuries were so severe that she had to be transferred to another hospital for additional treatment. ‌ ‌ Trisha is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nagpur, where doctors continue to monitor her condition. Her family alleges that the zipline facility lacked essential safety measures and failed to provide immediate assistance following the accident. To highlight their concerns, they have shared a video of the incident, underscoring the absence of adequate supervision and emergency response. Last week, a hot air balloon has crashed in central Turkey, leaving its pilot dead and 19 Indonesian tourists injured. In a statement, the governor's office said the balloon was affected by a sudden change of wind. Video from Ilhas News Agency showed one deflated balloon, its passenger basket lying on its side, as emergency services tended to injured people. The balloon was trying to make a hard landing near the village of Gozlukuyu in Aksaray province when the pilot fell out of the balloon's basket and his feet got tangled in a rope, Aksaray governor Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu said. "Unfortunately, our pilot got stuck under the basket and died,' he said, adding that the injured tourists were taken to hospital.

Hot air balloon crash kills 1 in Turkey

A hot air balloon crashed in central Turkey on Sunday, leaving its pilot dead and 19 Indonesian tourists injured, a local official said. In a statement, the governor's office said the balloon was affected by a sudden change of wind. It was trying to make a hard landing near the village of Gozlukuyu in Aksaray province, when the pilot fell out of the balloon's basket and his feet got tangled in a rope, Aksaray Governor Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu said. "Unfortunately, our pilot got stuck under the basket and died,' he said, adding that the injured tourists were taken to a hospital. Hot air ballooning is a popular tourist activity over the rugged landscape of central Turkey, which is dotted with ancient churches hewn into cliff faces. The attractions include the "fairy chimneys' of Cappadocia - the tall, cone-shaped rock formations created by natural erosion over thousands of years that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Video from Ilhas News Agency showed one deflated balloon, its passenger basket lying on its side, as emergency services tended to injured people. An investigation is underway. State-run Anadolu Agency said another hot air balloon taking off from the same location of Ilhara Valley also made a hard landing early Sunday morning, and that 12 Indian tourists were slightly injured and taken to hospital. Tragic final moments of hot air balloon pilot who 'got stuck' in horror plunge

A pilot has tragically lost his life in one of two hot air balloon catastrophes that unfolded yesterday, near Central Turkey's breathtaking Ihara Valley What should have been a joyful holiday experience descended into tragedy on Sunday after two hot air balloons crashed in separate incidents, leaving one pilot dead. Year after year, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Turkey for ballooning season, which reaches its peak between the months of June and August. These two incidents occurred near the Ihara Valley in Central Turkey, where the breathtaking natural landscape makes for spectacular views from the sky. ‌ The rugged "fairy chimney" rock formations of Cappadocia, a UNESCO World Heritage site caused by centuries of unusual erosion, are a particular draw for adventurous tourists. ‌ According to local media reports, both balloons took off during suitable weather conditions; however, they were forced to make a sudden touchdown due to unexpected changes in the wind. It was then that catastrophe struck. In an update, Aksaray Governor Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoğlu told members of the public: "Unfortunately, our pilot got stuck under the basket and died. Our tourists are in good condition. We took them to the hospital by ambulance. They are being examined." According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, another hot air balloon that launched in the Guzelyurt area of the region also ran into disaster after making a hard landing early Sunday morning, with 12 Indian tourists left "slightly wounded". All those injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. In the aftermath of this tragedy, local authorities have launched an investigation, while tour operators have been advised to review their safety protocols. Footage from Ilhas News Agency shows one deflated balloon, with its passenger basket lying on its side, while emergency services tended to the injured. ‌ The Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has stated that it will now be carrying out an investigation. The government body advised: "Unfortunately, the pilot of the balloon lost his life as a result of the hard landing. It was understood that the meteorological conditions were suitable for flight at the time of take-off, but the decision to land was made due to unexpected winds in the region." Unfortunately, these aren't the first fatal hot air balloon crashes to happen in Turkey in recent years. Back in 2022, two Spanish tourists died after a hot air balloon made a particularly rocky landing, following a sightseeing tour of Cappadocia's geological wonders.
