An Immigration Raid at two Ventura County Cannabis Farms Leads to 200 Arrests; Shot Fired
An Immigration Raid at two Ventura County Cannabis Farms Leads to 200 Arrests; Shot Fired originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Immigration raids at two Ventura County cannabis farms on Thursday led to 200 arrests, federal law enforcement officials say, and ten juveniles being taken into custody in sweeps that rapidly deteriorated into a chaotic scene that led an undocumented farmer to fall from a building and suffer a fatal head injury. The United Farm Workers said Friday afternoon that a worker had died - plummeting from a building while running from agents who raided Glass House Farms. Jaime Alanis, suffered a head injury in the fall that led to his death, family members said in a GoFundMe post. "My uncle Jaime was just a hard-working, innocent farmer. He has his wife and daughter waiting for him. He was chased by ICE agents, and we were told he fell 30ft," the worker's niece Yesenia Duran wrote on the page, which is seeking funds to send his body back to Mexico. "He was his family's provider. They took one of our family members We need justice. We are still investigating what happened." The FBI also announced a $50,000 reward after, according to a federal press release, "brave agents faced gun fire as they executed on criminal search warrants at a marijuana facility where they rescued at least 10 migrant children, arrested approximately 200 illegal aliens." The FBI released a photo of the purported gunman Thursday night. The raids led to violent clashes between agents and protestors who descended on the scene. Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the actions of federal agents, saying that children were among those fleeing tear gas and projectiles. The Camarillo raid targeted the Glass House Farms greenhouse complex on Laguna Road, which is one of the largest licensed cannabis farms in California. The company was founded by environmentalist Graham Farrar, who owns a second farm in Carpinteria that was also the scene of heavily militarized immigration actions Thursday. 'It's now under investigation for child labor violations,' he wrote on X. California Governor Gavin Newsom's office condemned the 'inhumane' raid and singled out US President Donald Trump's top adviser Stephen Miller. 'Instead of supporting the businesses and workers that drive our economy and way of life, Stephen Miller's tactics evoke chaos, fear and terror within our communities at every turn,' the statement continued. Trump has made a crackdown on illegal immigration one of his signature policies, accusing his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, and the Democrats of profiting from an influx of migrants across the border with Mexico. Newsom and other top Democrats, in turn, have labeled Trump's methods, including a promise to carry out the largest deportation in American history, dangerous and unlawful.
