Ministry gets stricter on plastic waste import, SIRIM appointed sole inspection body
KUALA LUMPUR: Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry has imposed stricter controls on the import of plastic waste into Malaysia effective from July 1.
Under the new directive, the ministry's agency SIRIM has been appointed as the sole inspection body and certificate of approval (COA) issuer for all waste plastic imports.
"Malaysia is open to issuing COA for the import of waste plastic provided the importers fulfil all conditions under Malaysian laws and the exporters belong to or originate from countries that have signed and ratified the basel convention," the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said importers wishing to import waste plastic may refer to SIRIM's guidelines for the Importation and Inspection of Waste Plastic at its website.
"Malaysia will not hesitate to act firmly against any individual or company that attempts to circumvent waste import controls or engage in illicit waste import activities.
"The ministry remains committed to facilitating a legitimate, responsible and eco-friendly trade environment to support Malaysia's sustainable socio-economic goals, while aligning with international best practices and multilaterally agreed global commitments on safeguarding the environment," it added.
