Stinky Britain is in the grips of a B.O crisis and I know why – there are 6 reasons you might be whiffy & easy solutions

Beauty editor Jo also gives you tips on how to beat B.O with high street saviours as she reveals why unwanted whiffs are on the rise this summer DON'T SWEAT IT Stinky Britain is in the grips of a B.O crisis and I know why – there are 6 reasons you might be whiffy & easy solutions BEAUTY editor Jo Hoare has had enough of Britain's summer stink. But are natural deodorants really to blame? Soap-dodgers beware, as she investigates what's really making the nation so whiffy. 4 Body odour seems to have made a big comeback for 2025 due to natural deodorants Credit: Getty 4 Working from home has made some of us forget basic hygiene rules Credit: Getty 4 If your morning journey requires any kind of exertion such as cycling, please factor in time for a pre-work shower Credit: Getty YOU know what I didn't expect to make a comeback in 2025? Body odour. Sure, some of these Nineties trends (disc belts, I'm looking at you) are a little questionable, but I never imagined I'd be reliving the stink of my sixth form common room, which was full of sweaty teens using only Impulse and Lynx to dull their hormonal armpits. We all smell sometimes, but anyone who has been on a train or bus, or to a shop or supermarket, during the recent heatwave can't fail to have noticed one thing: B.O is officially on the rise. It's got so bad that I've seriously considered messaging BBC Breakfast weather presenter Carol Kirkwood to ask if she'll include an 'odour-ometer' alongside her pollen count, just so I know whether to dig out my old Covid masks and a vial of smelling salts to make my morning commute more bearable. I'm not alone, either, as last month a poll revealed that almost half of Brits (47 per cent) live in fear of developing sweaty smells. But what's causing this current B.O bonanza? Two words: natural deodorant. Once the mainstay of hippy shops and those weird catalogues that fall out of gardening magazines, we've moved away from gunky pots that looked like you'd find them at the back of the fridge, or strange rocks you were supposed to rub into your pits. Now, natural deo is a thing of beauty, with designer scents, instagrammable packaging and – shockingly – zero change from £20 vibes. But there's one problem. It often doesn't work. On a chilly day, where temperatures don't reach double digits and you're doing nothing more strenuous than making a cuppa, you might just be OK. I don't wear deodorant - I put another solution on my armpits instead, I can even do gym sessions without sweating But chuck in sunshine, any form of physical activity, or the merest hint of a haywire hormone and you're done for. Even the rich and famous aren't immune. Made In Chelsea's Melissa Tattam admitted on her Wednesdays podcast with Sophie Habboo that, due to using natural deodorant, she 'f***ing stinks'. So why are we doing it to ourselves? I get it. I've dabbled in the natural stuff, too, driven by a desire for sustainability, curiosity and wanting to have a product on my dressing table that didn't scream 'stops you stinking for 72 hours you filthy pig'. (Sidenote: who actually needs their deodorant to work for three days? Have a shower.) I wanted to be a believer in natural deodorant, I really did. But I also wanted to be able to lift my arm to hold the rail of the Tube without my fellow passengers collapsing. So what is it about some natural deodorants that makes us more prone to ponging? 'Most natural deodorants don't contain aluminium salts, the key ingredient in traditional antiperspirants that physically blocks sweat glands and reduces perspiration,' explains GP and women's health specialist Dr Deepali Misra-Sharp. 'Instead, natural formulations usually rely on ingredients like baking soda, arrowroot powder, or magnesium hydroxide to neutralise odour rather than prevent sweating. 4 Make sure to wear socks in your trainers to avoid unwanted odours Credit: Getty 'In high temperatures, or when you're hormonally prone to sweating more – as with perimenopause, menstruation, or pregnancy – or exercising heavily, this can be a losing battle. 'There's also limited peer-reviewed evidence for the efficacy of many 'natural' deodorant ingredients and many products also need frequent reapplication to stay effective, which isn't always practical.' So far, so stinky. But it's not entirely the fault of natural deo – some people seem to actively encourage unwanted whiffs with their bad habits. Here's my rundown of the worst offenders: The smug cyclist We get it, you're saving the planet – and a fortune in train fares. What you're not saving is our noses. If your morning journey requires any kind of exertion, then please factor in time for a pre-work shower. The fast fashionista Man-made fabrics might mean you can have a different outfit every day of the summer for less than the price of a meal deal, but you might be costing yourself friends. Polyester, nylon and acrylics trap moisture, heat and odour creating a toxic B.O timebomb. The sock dodger Gen Z have done us a favour with their crew sock obsession. Admittedly, they can end up looking like those compression socks people wear to combat DVT, but at least they don't have stinky feet. Even trainer socks lead to cheesy trotters, slipping down just enough to allow foul foot odours to infiltrate your footwear. Night-time showerers I like an extra ten minutes in bed as much as the next person, but skipping a morning shower when the nighttime temps haven't dropped below 20 is a bad idea. Yes, it's nice to get into bed feeling fresh, but right now, showering first thing is a B.O-busting no-brainer. The WFH brigade Working from home has its perks, but it's made some of us forget basic hygiene rules. Wearing the same shirt all week is fine if your only co-worker is a houseplant, but once you rejoin the human race, it's time to reacquaint yourself with the washing machine.

Louis Tomlinson admits nerves as Sam Thompson awkwardly hovers behind

One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson is getting ready to play for England in the Soccer Aid match alongside his girlfriend Zara McDermott's recent ex Sam Thompson Louis Tomlinson revealed he is feeling nervous ahead of the Soccer Aid match alongside his girlfriend Zara McDermott's ex Sam Thompson. The One Direction star is now dating Zara, just months after she split from Sam at the start of the year. In an awkward twist of fate, both Louis and Sam are on the same team as they take part in the charity football match for Unicef. The pair crossed paths earlier in the week as they took part in a training session together with former Made In Chelsea star Sam insisting there's 'no hard feelings'. ‌ However, the meeting is likely to be a bit awkward as he was with Zara for over five years. Louis and Zara's budding romance came as a surprise to their fans as they grew close to each other in March. ‌ Ahead of the match, Sam and Louis are having to spend time together as they make sure they're as prepared as they can be. It seems Sam may be wanting to keep an eye on Louis as when the singer took part in an interview, the reality star could be seen hovering behind. Louis revealed being part of the team was "an incredible opportunity to play with some amazing players and do it all for an amazing cause". Yet, he admitted in all his years performing for millions of people, he is still nervous for Sunday's game. He told TalkSport: "I used to play in charity games a little bit more often when I was a bit younger and there's no comparison. Don't get me wrong I get really nervous doing a gig but that's my job, so to speak, but every football fan... you want to be decent, so you put that pressure on yourself." While Louis was chatting away, Sam could be seen standing behind him in an awkward moment. All eyes have been on the lads as training takes place while Sam revealed he will now not be playing the match but will be on the management team instead, becoming Louis' boss. ‌ Before the meeting, Sam discussed the expectations and attention around the pair being in the same room together. While on his Staying Relevant podcast, he recalled an interview where the focus turned to his impending encounter with Louis. Sam shared: "At the end of the interview, he goes, 'Look mate, I've got to ask the question that everyone wants to know. This is sort of the big question really, the elephant in the room, What's it going to be like with you and Louis? Obviously he's doing Soccer Aid too." Sam chuckled as he recounted the strained moment: "Mate, you should have seen the room, everybody, it was silent then everyone goes 'Woah, Woah Woah, end the call! End the call!' and I have just gone 'No, no guys, I've got this, I've got this.' I held my hands up to say just relax." He clarified: "I think I did alright and I meant everything I said as well, that it's not about me or Louis or who anyone is dating, it's f**king Unicef and charity and everyone is going to be there for the exact same reason. And if he has anything about him which I've heard he does, he's going to sit there and say the exact same thing." During a chat with The Mirror back in May, Sam spoke excitedly about the prospect of encountering Louis: "I've never met Louis, but the moment I see him, I'll be like, 'mate, how amazing is this what we're doing, and hopefully we can make as much money as possible. And I imagine – from what I hear is a really lovely bloke – I imagine the reply will be exactly the same."

Louis Tomlinson returns to Soccer Aid as Sam becomes his boss after quitting

Sam Thompson has confirmed he's pulled out of Soccer Aid, just hours after he came face-to-face with Louis Tomlinson - who is dating Sam's ex Zara McDermott Singer Louis Tomlinson has returned to Soccer Aid training in the wake of Sam Thompson quitting the charity match just hours on from their awkward meeting. Former Made In Chelsea star Sam announced his withdrawal during Friday's edition of This Morning. Sam and the One Direction singer had both been due to represent the England team this Sunday for Unicef, a charity for which Sam recently endured a punishing 260-mile marathon over five days. ‌ It was sent to be a slightly awkward affair thanks to Louis now dating Sam's recent ex, Love Island and Strictly Come Dancing star Zara McDermott. However, Sam and Louis won't have to worry about working as a team together on the pitch thanks to Sam stepping down. ‌ Speaking to This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Sam explained: "We've still got the management team of England, we've got Vicky McClure, Tyson Fury, who's stepping into some new shoes and Harry Redknapp... But also because I'm not going to be able to run around, you've also got me, part of the management team. Come on baby!" Dermot then asked Sam to clarify he had pulled out of playing duties, saying: "So you can't play this year obviously because you're literally falling apart. So is that right? you're not going to play but you're part of the management team?" Sam confirmed: "Yeah I came here with high hopes and went to see Gary the physio and I can kick a ball from a standing start, but when it comes to like general chaos of playing competitive sport there's just no way. "I cant really run properly so yeah. They were very kind and said we still want you to be a part, so I get to go on the dark side with Tyson Fury." ‌ Sam's ex Zara raised a few eyebrows when she quickly moved on with singer Louis, 33, just weeks on from moving out of Sam's London home at the start of the year - with Sam one of those surprised to see his former girlfriend coupled up with the One Direction legend. Offering his insight into why some individuals jump into new romances quickly, he noted: "I suppose a lot of people look for validation in other people right? And they look for the next person instantly because it's like 'I need to find someone else to fill that hole and I need to find that excitement.'". However, during a podcast conversation with his friend Pete Wicks, Sam appeared more composed when discussing the topic. He recalled an interview where the focus turned to his impending encounter with Louis. ‌ Sam shared: "At the end of the interview, he goes, 'Look mate, I've got to ask the question that everyone wants to know. This is sort of the big question really, the elephant in the room, What's it going to be like with you and Louis? Obviously he's doing Soccer Aid too.'". Sam chuckled as he recounted the strained moment: "Mate, you should have seen the room, everybody, it was silent then everyone goes 'Woah, Woah Woah, end the call! End the call!' and I have just gone 'No, no guys, I've got this, I've got this.' I held my hands up to say just relax." He clarified his sincere motivations, asserting, "I think I did alright and I meant everything I said as well, that it's not about me or Louis or who anyone is dating, it's f**king Unicef and charity and everyone is going to be there for the exact same reason. And if he has anything about him which I've heard he does, he's going to sit there and say the exact same thing." Decision behind Sam Thompson and Zara's split amid Louis Tomlinson run-in

Made In Chelsea's Sam Thompson and ex Zara McDermott split earlier this year and now Zara's new beau Louis Tomlinson is set to come face to face with Sam again this weekend Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott split earlier this year - and now he faces an awkward run in with her new man. The former Love Island star turned documentary maker is now dating One Direction star Louis Tomlinson. In awkward timing, fresh from their split earlier this year, Sam, 32, is playing in the Soccer Aid game this weekend alongside the singer, 33, after they went public with their new romance. The pair have been spotted together multiple times. ‌ As they prepare for another awkward run in this weekend - having trained together this week - people have been looking back at Sam and 28 year old Zara's romance as they rumbled the real reason for their split. ‌ One person, whose comment had more than 300 upvotes, said at the time: "A shame but not surprising. I always found it odd how much they talked about wanting to get married one day but never got engaged. I always sensed Sam wasn't sure." Another fan agreed, saying: "This is it for me for two people who seemed so committed to show themselves as happy and healthy they did not seem in any rush to get engaged and married. That's always a sign things probably aren't going as well as they want to make everyone believe," whilst one said: "It's common when you meet young to wait a bit to get married." Just last year, Sam, admitted he felt "no pressure" to wed Zara, whilst she said she'd love to tie the knot. "I'm so happy being with the person I know I'm going to spend the rest of my life with, I don't see any sort of rush at all. We speak about marriage a lot, but there's no pressure to put a ring on it," he said at the time. Following the split, a source told OK! that Sam and Zara were "devastated" by their split. The insider said: "Although they have known it's been over for a while, Sam and Zara are both devastated and heartbroken that they couldn't make it work as they had so much love for each other. When they had problems in the summer they vowed to give it one more try and hoped that they could work through their issues, but it proved impossible as they were just at different stages in their lives." ‌ Sam also gave a heartbreaking interview later where he said people could "see a sadness behind his eyes". "I went through a breakup and everyone keeps saying they can see sadness behind the eyes," he said, "I'm terrified about where I am going. The way I see it, I am a plane and the pilot has passed out in the cockpit, and they are like: 'Does anyone know how to fly?'" Asked what he was doing for self love, he said: "Not much, to be honest with you. I suppose a lot of people look for validation in other people, and they look for the other person instantly to fill that hole. I can't do that."

Sam Thompson breaks down in tears as Pete Wicks surprises him in sweet reunion

Made In Chelsea star, Sam Thompson, took off on a mammoth 260-mile endurance challenge for UNICEF on Monday on foot and by bike from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford Sam Thompson burst into tears when he saw his best pal, Pete Wicks, cheering him on during his epic challenge for UNICEF this week. The Made In Chelsea star, 31, took off on a mammoth 260-mile endurance feat for Soccer Aid on Monday on foot and by bike from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford. Sam is seen covered in sweat, limping, with his knee bandaged up, Sam can't control his emotions as he clocks Pete, 36, who rushes over to give his friend a huge hug. Visibly stunned, the I'm A Celebrity winner begins to cry and splutters: "Thank you so much for coming," Pete says: "Don't be silly. As if I was never not going to come. I'm so proud of you. You're smashing it!" Sam concedes: "I'm not smashing it" to which Pete insists "You are smashing it! Are you still going? Well then you're smashing it." However, heartbreakingly, Sam then says: "I'm not the guy, man." Hugging his friend even tighter, Pete says: "You are the guy. You were the guy before this started and you're the guy now." Sam took the first steps of his gruelling Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid for UNICEF challenge on Monday as he aimed to run and cycle 49 miles from West London to Milton Keynes on day one. He was joined on the start line by I'm A Celebrity…Unpacked co-host Joel Dommett, as well as his sister Louise Thompson, her partner Ryan Libbey and their son, Leo. Speaking on Monday, Sam, who made his debut playing for England at Soccer Aid for UNICEF last year, told the charity: "I had no sleep last night, I'm absolutely terrified but I know I just need to keep my head in the game and remember why I'm doing this. "It's all for UNICEF and to raise as much money as possible so I'm going to dig deep and get on with it and look forward to a hot shower at the end." Meanwhile, Louise said: "Sam's such a happy, entertaining person, I've never seen him do something that will require so much resilience and endurance. I'm so proud of him, he's put so much work in and it's all for an incredible cause and will help so many children. "I'm waving him off at the beginning and I'll be seeing him at the end, that's all the support he needs from me." Sam's nationwide challenge will see him tackle five back-to-back endurance days – running five marathons and cycling more than 130 miles. He still has three day to go as heads north towards the final whistle in Old Trafford, Manchester on Friday 6 June. His mammoth mission will be captured for a one-off special documentary: Sam Thompson 's Match Ball Mission Friday 13th June 9pm on ITV. The reality star has had a challenging year after splitting up with his girlfriend, Zara McDermott, and navigating life as a singleton. Sam is now rumoured to be dating Love Island's Samie Elishi. Zara, meanwhile is loved up with One Direction's, Louis Tomlinson, after sources said that she and and Sam broke up because they 'wanted different things out of life'.
