Israel-backed aid initiative 'outrageous'
The use of the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to distribute food in the Palestinian territory is "outrageous", the head of a UN inquiry said Wednesday. Navi Pillay, who chairs the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Israel and the Palestinian territories, joined a growing chorus of criticism of the GHF's operations, and cited its US links. "In every war, the siege and starvation surely leads to death," the former UN rights chief told journalists. "But this initiative of what's called a foundation, a private foundation, to supply food, is what I see as outrageous, because it involves the United States itself, the government, and it turns out, as we watch daily, that people who go to those centres are being killed as they seek food."

Oman condemns violations in Palestinian Territories
Geneva, Switzerland – Oman has strongly condemned the systematic practices carried out by Israeli forces in the occupied Palestinian Territories, particularly the extensive targeting of civilian infrastructure, including educational and cultural centres. This was reaffirmed during Oman's participation in the 59th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, during the interactive dialogue on the report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Delivering the sultanate's statement, Sara al Balushi, First Secretary in Oman's Permanent Delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, expressed the sultanate's gratitude to the commission for its efforts in preparing the report, despite the serious challenges posed by the Israeli authorities' continued refusal to grant access to the occupied territories. Sara noted that the report outlines a series of grave violations by Israeli forces, including the deliberate targeting of schools, cultural centres and religious sites. She said such systematic destruction represents an attempt to erase Palestinian identity and heritage and constitutes a war of annihilation under international law. She stressed that these actions fall within the framework of crimes aimed at the total eradication of Palestinian national presence and identity.

An officially private effort with opaque funding, GHF began operations on May 26 after Israel completely cut off supplies into Gaza for more than two months, sparking warnings of mass famine. The United Nations and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed while trying to reach GHF distribution points. Pillay said the commission would "have to look into... the policy purpose and how it's being effected. "We have to spell out what is the motive of, right now, the killing of people who are coming for humanitarian aid from this so-called foundation -- and that lives are being lost just in trying to secure food for their children." Unprecedented in its open-ended scope, the three-person Commission of Inquiry was established by the UN Human Rights Council in May 2021 to investigate alleged violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in Israel and the Palestinian territories. South African former High Court judge Pillay, 83, served as a judge on the International Criminal Court and presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. On Tuesday she presented the commission's latest report to the Human Rights Council. It said Israel had attacked Gaza's schools, religious and cultural sites as part of a "widespread and systematic" assault on the civilian population, in which Israeli forces have committed "war crimes" and "the crime against humanity of extermination". Qatar affirms impunity, nonaccountability encourage Israel to commit further violations, crimes against Palestinians
GENEVA: The State of Qatar has affirmed that impunity and nonaccountability have encouraged Israel to continue committing further violations and crimes against Palestinians. It called on the international community to take the necessary measures to stop these crimes, ensure accountability for those responsible, and compel Israel, the occupying power, to comply with international law and ensure the restoration of all the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, in particular the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign State of Palestine on the borders of Jun. 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This came in the State of Qatar's statement delivered by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar in Geneva HE Dr Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, during her participation in the interactive dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, Item 2, within the framework of the 59th session of the Human Rights Council. She said that the report cited the seizure, theft, and destruction of Palestinian Islamic and Christian cultural and religious sites by the Israeli occupation forces and Israeli settlers, and the deliberate and unjustified targeting of educational facilities, particularly in the Gaza Strip, as well as UNRWA schools, despite being regularly informed of the coordinates of these schools and the lack of any evidence of military targets in these facilities. She said that these actions were a heinous crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. The Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar in Geneva affirmed that this racist and criminal Israeli approach aimed to genocide the Palestinian people, displace them, and deprive Palestinian children and youth of their right to education, expand the scope of Israeli settlements, and undermine the identity and existence of the Palestinian people and their historical connection to the State of Palestine. She also welcomed the members of the International Commission of Inquiry and thanked them for their efforts.
