PM Modi congratulates Lee Jae-Myung on being elected South Korean President, looks to deepen India-ROK
New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Lee Jae-Myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea and expressed his intent to work closely with him to 'expand and strengthen' the India-ROK 'Special Strategic Partnership.' In a post on X, he said, 'Congratulations to Mr Lee Jae-Myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea. Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.' Lee Jae-myung's hardscrabble path to the South Korean presidency mirrors his country's rise from grinding poverty to one of the world's leading economies, Al Jazeera reported. When Lee, a scandal-prone school dropout-turned-lawyer who was elected in a landslide on Tuesday, was born in 1963, South Korea's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita was comparable to sub-Saharan African nations. Known for his populist and outspoken style, Lee, the standard bearer for the left-leaning Democratic Party, has often credited his humble beginnings with moulding his progressive beliefs. 'Poverty is not a sin, but I was always particularly sensitive to the injustices I experienced because of poverty,' Lee said in a speech in 2022, as quoted by Al Jazeera. 'The reason I am in politics now is to help those still suffering in the pit of poverty and despair that I managed to escape, by building a fair society and a world with hope,' he said. As president, Lee has pledged to prioritise the economy, proposing, among other things, a major boost in investment in artificial intelligence, the introduction of a four-and-a-half-day work week, and tax deductions for parents in proportion to the number of children they have, as per Al Jazeera. On foreign affairs, he has promised to mend relations with North Korea while pushing for its ultimate denuclearisation - in keeping with the traditional stance of his Democratic Party - and maintain the US-Korea security alliance without alienating China and Russia. South Korea: Lee nominates close confidant, activist-turned-politician Kim as prime minister
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday nominated one of his close confidants, Rep. Kim Min-seok of the Democratic Party (DP) who served as a top campaign aide, as his candidate for prime minister, marking his first personnel announcement since he took office earlier in the day. Kim, a former student activist turned four-term lawmaker, played a key role in Lee's presidential campaign. "Kim brings extensive legislative experience, strong policy expertise in public livelihood issues, international perspective and unifying political leadership -- the right person to lead the nation through crises and restore the people's economy," Lee told a press conference at the presidential office. The prime minister nomination requires parliamentary approval following a confirmation hearing. Lee also appointed DP lawmaker Kang Hoon-sik, another key campaign figure, as his chief of staff, Yonhap news agency reported. Veteran diplomat Wi Sung-lac was named national security adviser, and former Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok was nominated to head the National Intelligence Service. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his best wishes to newly-elected South Korean President Lee Jae-myung for winning the top post and expressed his eagerness to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two nations. Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lee Jae-myung was elected President on Wednesday after months of turmoil surrounding the impeachment and ouster of his former opponent over a botched attempt to impose martial law. Taking to X, PM Modi posted, "Congratulations to Mr Lee Jae-Myung on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea. Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership." Lee's win was a remarkable comeback after having lost to former President Yoon Suk Yeol by a razor-thin margin of less than one percentage point in the previous election in 2022. While Yoon's attempt to impose martial law in December paved the way for Lee's rise to the presidency, it also deepened the nation's political divide and increased the challenges posed by everything from the United States' tariff policies to North Korea's advancing nuclear weapons programme. With all votes counted, Lee of the liberal DP won 49.42 per cent of the votes, compared with 41.15 per cent for his conservative People Power Party (PPP) rival Kim Moon-soo.

India seeks to grow South Korea ties under leader Lee
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that he wanted to 'expand and strengthen' ties with South Korea, sending congratulations as centre-left President Lee Jae-myung took office. Lee takes the helm of a nation deeply divided after his predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol's disastrous attempt to declare martial law in December. 'Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK (Republic of Korea) Special Strategic Partnership,' Modi said in a post on X. South Korea is still reeling from the turmoil sparked by impeached ex-leader Yoon's martial law declaration and the rise of the far right in its aftermath -- a development experts say has deeply shaken the country's collective sense of democracy.
