"Country Over My Child": KL Rahul's 'Huge Call' Before India v England Test Series Revealed
India's star batter KL Rahul had a good start to the England Test series. He scored 42 runs in his first innings and followed it up with a well-crafted 137, albeit in a losing cause in the first Test in Leeds. Rahul has been opening the batting for India in the ongoing series after Rohit Sharma called time on his career in May this year. Rahul, who has mostly been used as a floater in India's batting line-up, has lived up to the expectations so far. Talking about his performance in the first Test against England, the credit for it goes to his commitment. Despite welcoming his baby in March, Rahul left no stone unturned to prepare himself for the England Test series. Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has pointed out Rahul's commitment. He said that the player preferred the country over his newborn. "I really liked the fact that he was someone who said, 'I want to go to England early. I want to play the side game.' Forget about the hundred he got - that came later. The intent - that's what matters. The intent to be there early, to be prepared, to be with the side. Let's not forget, he's a young father, and I don't think his child is travelling with him initially. So for him to say, 'Country over my child' - that's a huge call," Hemang Badani told Times of India. "He could've easily said, 'I'm not playing the side game anyway, I'll just go straight to the Test match.' But he didn't," he added. Rahul was part of the Intra-Squad match that took place between India and India A. This was the only match simulation for the Indian cricket team ahead of the games vs England. "KL made a statement I remember ahead of the Test series: 'I care for this team, and I want to be here.' He wanted to go to England. I could see the hunger in his eyes and in his words. In the absence of Rohit and Virat, he becomes the senior-most batter - and he has played that role really well," said Badani. "He's played in England before. And in terms of maturity and technique, you can clearly see he's more focused now. He knows he has to fill the vacuum left behind. The rest of the squad - apart from Karun - are mostly under 30. So he has to guide players like Sai Sudharsan, Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Nitish Kumar Reddy - all of whom are new to this level," he added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal outlines KL Rahul's impact after opening day hundred at Headingley against England
Leeds [UK], June 21 (ANI): India's magician with the bat, Yashasvi Jaiswal, gave away the secrets that helped him flourish in his debut Test in the demanding conditions of England on the opening day of the series opener of the five-match series at Headingley. With determination in his eyes and a sublime touch in his robust technique, Jaiswal dazzled with his rollicking 101(158) against England's fast bowling attack, bereft of its pace wizards James Anderson and Stuart Broad. He continued his scorching form and boasts a unique feat to his name. Jaiswal has hammered Test centuries in his debut fixture in three different countries: the West Indies, Australia, and now England. The 23-year-old's dominance on English soil stems from his ability to grasp areas to target while conversing with his experienced KL Rahul. 'KL Rahul is very experienced. I can understand a lot by talking to him -- where the runs can be made and how we can carry on the innings. It was a lot of fun to play with him. He also came with India A. We did a lot of preparation and batting together, so we got a lot of ideas to understand each other,' Jaiswal said while speaking to Star Sports. Before stepping on Headingley's dry surface, Jaiswal refined his technique during the two unofficial Tests against England Lions, training camp in Beckenham and the intra-squad match held days before the first Test. 'We did a lot of preparation before coming here. It was a lot of fun to play, and it felt very good to bat. It was very good -- I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot,' Jaiswal added. The young swashbuckler outlined his approach and the way he applies himself on the field. He offers himself more time on the field while preparing himself mentally to extend his stay on the crease for as long as possible. 'I try to give myself more time to play my shots. I try to be mentally ready and aim to bat as long as possible. I try to create a good platform for the team. If I am set, I try to take it deep and play till the end. I keep telling myself to keep playing. Whatever happens, I will manage and always keep this mindset,' he said. Jaiswal was undone by England captain Ben Stokes' golden touch. Jaiswal went to drive the ball, but the ball seamed off the pitch to beat the outside edge and rattle the timber. Captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant forged an unbeaten 138-run partnership to see off the day, ensuring India remained unscathed, at a venue where India hasn't tasted victory since 2002. Bad news for Nitish Kumar Reddy, THIS star all-rounder set to give Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill sleepless nights as team selection headache grows
Several players impressed in India's intra-squad match. Star all-rounder Shardul Thakur was a standout performer, captivating everyone with his brilliant display. He managed to score a century in the match. Shardul Thakur played an unbeaten 122 off the top bowlers in an intra squad match against the main squad of India, which goes a long way in arguing his case to play in the first Test against England. He had to challenge Bumrah, Siraj, Krishna, and Singh. It was an excellent performance. The century by Thakur and 101 by Sarfaraz Khan poses an Indian selection headache. The team is in a dilemma of whether it has to select Thakur or Nitish Kumar Reddy to play the first Test. It is an uphill choice. Unlike Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy participated in all the five Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Reddy scored a masterclass hundred in Melbourne but his bowling did not make much of an impact. Thakur is an exceptional jack of trades. Thakur is a much-respected bowler who has a reputation of taking wickets when it matters. His batting prowess also plays an important role now. Will he be included in the Headingley Test tour? The last time Thakur played a Test was against South Africa in December 2023. His stats include 11 matches, 331 runs and 31 wickets. A starring innings of 101 off 76 balls by Sarfaraz Khan was another highlight to India A. Back in the main team, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill scored of half-centuries apiece. An exciting game by all means! The match between the squad was concluded early. On June 17, India leaves to go to Headingley. The first-Test starts June 20. There is the focus on the team selection.

The Kind Of Atmosphere Rohit Bhai Maintains...: Shubman Gill Compares Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohlis Captaincy Ahead Of England Tour
Shubman Gill, who has been newly appointed as the captain of the India Test side, will face England in his first assignment at English soil. Gill took the baton from Rohit Sharma who bid farewell to the whites recently. Along with Rohit, India's most successful batter in the current team- Virat Kohli has also announced his retirement. After the greats went away, the onus and the responsibility now lies on Gill's shoulder and he would like to make the most of it. Ahead of the start of the Test series against England, Gill in an interview with Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports, hailed Rohit Sharma's captaincy. "Rohit Sharma is very aggressive as a captain in terms of his strategy. He is someone who is very clear in his communication with players about what he expects from them, both during and after a series. The kind of atmosphere Rohit Bhai maintains, even if Rohit Bhai abuses you, you won't take it to heart; that's his personality. He thinks about the team and the team's well-being," Shubman said. Shubman Gill On Virat Kohli's Leadership Shubman Gill also shared thoughts on Virat Kohli's leadership and how the right hand batter has been so successful and dominating. "When I used to play under Virat Kohli's captaincy, his activeness on the field in Test matches, his ideas and his thinking were something I really liked and learned from him. He is very active; if one plan doesn't work, he has another plan ready. He communicates well with the bowlers," Gill said. Gill also broke the typical notion about Rohit's captaincy being calm and smooth instead he believes that Sharma was always an aggressive leader. "Rohit Bhai (Rohit Sharma) is an aggressive captain. He is tactically an aggressive captain. He is someone who is very clear in his communication, before the series, during the matches and after the series," he stated.
