In a first, Delhi's IGI Airport gets ‘Net Zero Waste to Landfill' Platinum certification
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has received the 'Net Zero Waste to Landfill' Platinum certification from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) for all its terminals. The certification was awarded for the operations phase, making it the first airport in the country to receive this recognition. The airport, operated by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), said that approximately 95 per cent of its solid waste, including food and recyclables, is diverted away from landfills. This is achieved through source segregation, recycling, and in-house composting. 'Delhi Airport embeds Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles holistically across its operations, from green energy and emission reduction to inclusive community development. This recognition is not just a certification; it is validation of DIAL's unwavering commitment to building a future-ready, climate-resilient airport ecosystem. We are proud to set the benchmark for Indian aviation in responsible waste management and environmental governance. Our adaptability and proactive approach ensure that we remain at the forefront of responsible and sustainable aviation,' said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, DIAL CEO. According to the operator, the waste management system at the airport includes real-time waste tracking mechanisms, two-bin and four-bin segregation models, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and organic waste composters. These measures are aimed at minimising landfill use and maximising resource recovery. DIAL also said its broader environmental measures, such as the use of green vehicles, electric-powered taxiing with taxibots, and infrastructure like the Eastern Cross Taxiway, support its target of achieving ACI Level 5 Net Zero Carbon status. The airport also treats and reuses 100 per cent of its wastewater on site. The terminal buildings at Delhi airport are already certified at the highest platinum level by Hyderabad-headquartered Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and US Green Building Council (USGBC) under green building standards. DIAL said the new certification aligns with environmental regulations and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, while also contributing to its ESG goals. Last year, the airport also became the first in the country to achieve a 'net zero carbon emission airport status (Level 5 certification).

245 new projects: Commercial realty makes post-Covid comeback in Guj
1 2 Ahmedabad: After years of volatility, Gujarat's commercial real estate sector is witnessing strong revival: the state recorded 245 new commercial project launches in 2024-25 — highest since 2019-20, when 269 projects were registered. Commercial unit registrations also hit a post-Covid peak, with 31,520 units launched, according to a recent GujRERA report. Commercial project registrations dropped by 58% in 2020-21 — the peak Covid year, as work-from-home culture and lockdowns disrupted demand. "Office demand declined sharply, and sectors like entertainment, food, gyms, and tuition classes were hit. Naturally, new launches fell during and after Covid. But demand is picking up, and we've seen more launches across in the past year," said Tejas Joshi, vice-president, Credai Gujarat. Tejas Joshi, vice-president, Credai Gujarat, says "Cities like Ahmedabad have also seen encouraging growth in rental values." "In larger cities, nearly 40-50% of commercial projects are now green buildings. State govt incentives — such as 7-12% relief on chargeable FSI — have driven this shift. Buyers, too, prefer green buildings for their 30% or more savings in electricity costs," said Taral Shah, co-chairman, Indian Green Building Council (Ahmedabad chapter). According to GujRERA, commercial launches grew modestly in 2018-19 (3.9%) but plunged in 2019-20 and 2020-21 (both -37%), with a steep -63.9% drop in investment in 2020-21. The sector rebounded in 2021-22 (43.5% growth in projects, 53.4% in units) and again in 2023-24 (68.2% growth in investment). The momentum has continued into 2024-25, with a 15.6% rise in projects and 20.7% in investment. Ahmedabad alone registered 72 commercial projects in 2024-25, attracting investments worth Rs 3,394 crore. "The average cost per unit dropped from Rs 34 lakh in 2017-18 to Rs 25 lakh in 2022-23 but surged to Rs 44 lakh in 2023-24 and settled at Rs 40 lakh in 2024-25, indicating a tilt toward higher-value commercial spaces," the report states. The average number of units per project declined from 137 in 2018-19 to 107 in 2021-22, recovered to 131 in 2023-24, and slightly dipped to 118 in 2024-25 — a sign of evolving market dynamics. "Recent trends, with a stable 118 units per project and Rs 40 lakh per unit in 2024-25, hint at a maturing, demand-driven commercial sector that is adjusting to modern business needs," the report concluded.

Kishan inaugurates facade lighting system of Kacheguda rly station
Hyderabad: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy stated that Kacheguda Railway Station has a rich historical background and contributes to environmental protection through its use of green energy. On Monday, during the inauguration of the Kacheguda Railway Station façade illumination, organised by the Central Tourism Department for Rs 2.23 crore, he noted that the Indian Green Building Council has awarded the station a platinum rating for its sustainability efforts. Additionally, Kacheguda Station has been recognised as the most energy-efficient station in Indian Railways. Kacheguda Railway Station was also the first in Indian Railways to introduce digital payment services. Acknowledging its importance, the station is set to undergo redevelopment with Rs 421.66 crore under the Amrit Bharat Railway Station Scheme. Overall, 40 railway stations across the state are being redeveloped with an estimated budget of Rs 2,750 crore to accommodate future needs over the next 30 years. Kishan Reddy recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly redeveloped Begumpet, Karimnagar, and Warangal railway stations. These development projects aimed at providing passengers with state-of-the-art facilities that meet international standards. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Cherlapalli Railway Station, constructed at a cost of Rs 430 crore, to relieve pressure on the main railway stations in the city. The railway sector transportation system has made remarkable strides in Telangana over the past 11 years. The Union Minister emphasized that during this period, the state's road network has doubled, while the railway network has tripled. Since 2014, Rs 30,832 crore has been allocated for railway development in Telangana. In this year's railway budget, Rs 5,337 crore has been set aside for Telangana, which is 20 times more than the allocation in 2014-15. Currently, railway development projects worth Rs 42,219 crore are ongoing. Before 2014, an average of 17.4 km of railway lines were constructed in Telangana. After Narendra Modi took office, this rate increased to 55 km per year. Railway services have become available in regions like Medak and Siddipet for the first time. Telangana has pioneered the railway protection system 'Kavach,' developed with indigenous technology, he said. This system is now being implemented nationwide. To promote further research in this area, a 'Kavach Centre of Excellence' (CoE) has been established in Secunderabad. The Central government has been taking measures to ensure comprehensive research is conducted through this centre in the future.

Green growth: Rajasthan crosses 600 IGBC-certified buildings, ranks in top 10
More than 600 IGBC-rated green buildings in Rajasthan now JAIPUR: Rajasthan has emerged as one of the top 10 leading states with more than 600 Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) -rated green buildings covering 185 million sq ft, demonstrating an uptrend in sustainable development . Corporate and government offices have been at the forefront of adopting green certification, primarily due to the benefits in energy and water consumption. M Anand, deputy executive director of CII-IGBC, said these buildings achieve 40-50% energy savings compared to traditional structures. Water demand reduction ranges from 30-35%, he added. He said earlier the construction of green buildings used to cost about 20% more compared to conventional houses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo "Now the price difference is merely 2-3%. The additional investment is typically recovered within 18 months through reduced operational costs, while the benefits of lower energy and water consumption continue throughout the building's lifetime," said M Anand at a CII-Rajasthan event on environment protection. Besides corporate offices and govt buildings, green certification in the real estate sector has also witnessed a sharp increase with growing awareness about the benefits among the end-users and the govt incentives offered to developers. "The market penetration of green buildings in Rajasthan in the new projects currently stands at 10-12%, marking substantial growth over the past decade. Green homes have proven to be better investments than instruments like gold and equity," said Anand. Citing examples, he said these buildings incorporate innovative plumbing features to reduce water use, install rainwater harvesting facilities, and recycle grey and black water. The hospitality sector, particularly hotel chains, has embraced green building certification , recognizing the long-term benefits of sustainable construction. While architectural expertise for green buildings was concentrated in metro areas earlier, the concept has gradually expanded to smaller cities. Current CII-Rajasthan chairman Sanjay Agarwal and the previous chairman Arun Misra also spoke on the initiatives CII is pursuing to increase the industry's green footprint.
