Congress seeks judicial probe into 'corruption' under Puducherry government

NEW DELHI: The Congress' Puducherry unit on Wednesday accused the Union territory's NDA government of "rampant corruption" and demanded a judiciary probe. It alleged that in the last four years, temple properties were "grabbed" by MLAs from the constituent parties of the NDA alliance, and bribes worth crores of rupees were taken to issue the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) licences. Addressing a press conference here along with former Puducherry chief minister V Narayanasami, Pradesh Congress committee president V Vaithilingam said, "The BJP says that they are the saviours of Hindu temples. But look at what is happening in Puducherry, where their MLAs are after temple properties." There was no immediate reaction from the UT government over the allegations. The Congress leaders alleged that huge bribes were being paid to obtain IMFL manufacturing licences and referred a BJP MLA's revelation in the assembly that Rs 12 crore was paid for a single licence. The Puducherry PCC leaders demanded a judicial probe into all the "corruption scandals" and the instances "temple land grabbing by leaders of the All India N.R. Congress and BJP". Earlier, they met leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and brought the issues to his notice.

Supports pour in for Monday's statewide strike by bars

Restaurants and bar owners stage a protest against the Maharashtra government's recent tax hikes on alcohol, in Thane on Monday. (ANI Photo) MUMBAI: In a powerful escalation of the State-wide protest against the Maharashtra Governments draconian liquor tax regime, the Hotel And Restaurant Association (Western India) HRAWI has appealed and urged over 11,500 hotels to support the Bar Bandh and No Alcohol call on Monday, July 14th. Thus an AHAR-initiated strike has received a strong backing. Based on HRAWI's advisory, regional hotel Associations across the State, including Palghar, Vasai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar and Nashik among others, have come out in full support to shut bars and alcohol service areas inside hotels. The protest is a response to the Maharashtra Governments recent decisions to: -Increase in excise duty by a massive 60 per cent, imposition of a 10 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and hike in annual bar license fees by 15 per cent. This tax hike is nothing short of an existential threat to the hospitality sector. For many establishments, this triple blow will mean shutting shop permanently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo By participating in this protest, our members are not expressing dissent they are fighting for survival, said Jimmy Shaw, President, HRAWI. The tourism and hospitality industry in Maharashtra is a vital pillar of the State's economy: - supports over 20 lakh direct and indirect jobs, contributes significantly to the State's GDP, and attracts over 15 crore domestic and international tourists annually. Restaurants and bars in hotels form the backbone of tourist and business hospitality infrastructure across key destinations like Mumbai, Pune, Lonavala, Alibaug, Nashik, and more. With the proposed taxes, Maharashtra will become one of the most expensive places in the country to operate a bar, pricing out both operators and tourists, said an HRAWI release. HRAWI anticipates this massive discrepancy in taxation will lead to:-widespread closure of bars and permit rooms, loss of over 4 lakh jobs across Maharashtra, diversion of tourists to neighbouring, more affordable states, and spike in unregulated alcohol consumption in public spaces affecting the overall tourism potential of the state. An average tourist spends between Rs.2,000/- to Rs.5,000/- a day, and a significant part of that is on food and beverage. With these new taxes, Maharashtra is effectively pushing leisure tourism out of reach for Indian families, adds Shaw. The decision by 11,500 hotel-based bars to join the shutdown underlines the depth of concern across the hospitality ecosystem. The impact will be felt from five-star city hotels to budget accommodations in tourist towns, all of whom depend on responsible, regulated alcohol service as part of the guest experience. This is not just about alcohol its about business viability, jobs, and Maharashtra's standing as a tourism-friendly State. We urge the Government to reconsider these punitive measures immediately, added Shaw. HRAWI reiterates its appeal to the Government of Maharashtra to: rationalise the excessive hikes in excise duty, VAT, and license fees, reviewing of the mandatory yearly revision of license fees, Initiating a constructive dialogue with industry bodies, and creating a policy framework that balances revenue goals with industry sustainability. "Until then, July 14th will remain a silent yet powerful protest, where Maharashtras hospitality industry will put business on pause to fight for its future," said the release.

Rats Drank 800 Bottles Of Liquor? Dhanbad Traders' Bizarre Cover-Up Attempt

Ranchi: Such is the rat race for corruption that even the humble rat cannot maintain a clean image. In Jharkhand's Dhanbad, traders unable to explain missing stocks of Indian Made Foreign Liquor have accused rats of drinking from about 800 bottles. The bizarre allegation against the poor rodents, who cannot even sue those who maligned them, comes a month before Jharkhand's new liquor policy kicks in on September 1. Before the policy is implemented, the state administration is examining liquor stocks. As part of this drive, shops in Dhanbad's Baliapur and Pradhan Khunta areas were checked. The stock check, carried out in the presence of top administrative officials, revealed 802 IMFL bottles were empty or almost empty. When the traders were asked about this discrepancy, they blamed rats. They told officials that rats chewed off the bottles' lids and drank the liquor. The desperate move to shift blame did not work, and the traders were asked to compensate for the losses. Ramlila Ravani, Assistant Excise Commissioner, said the traders will be sent notices for compensating for the losses. Asked about the traders blaming rats for the depleted liquor stocks, he replied, "Nonsense." Interestingly, this is not the first time in Dhanbad that rats have been blamed for the theft of intoxicants. Earlier, they were accused of eating about 10 kg bhang (cannabis) and 9 kg marijuana seized by the police. The matter even went to the court, which pulled up the officials concerned for their absurd claim. Under Jharkhand's new liquor policy, management and allocation of liquor shops will shift from the state government's control to private licensees, who will be selected through an online lottery. The policy, officials have said, aims to boost transparency in revenue collection and reduce the administrative burden on the state.
