QUAD nations launch coast guard cooperation initiative
The coast guards of QUAD nations — India, Japan, the United States, and Australia — have launched the QUAD at Sea Ship Observer Mission to deepen maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. The observer-at-sea engagement marks a first-of-its-kind initiative among the Indian Coast Guard, Japan Coast Guard, United States Coast Guard, and Australian Border Force. The Indian Coast Guard's active participation underlines India's strategic maritime vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and complements national efforts under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. It highlights India's firm commitment to capacity-building, humanitarian outreach, and a rules-based maritime order in the region. The mission paves the way for deepening operational synergies, trust, and maritime governance among like-minded Indo-Pacific partners. As global maritime challenges grow complex, this initiative is a stride towards shared security, collective preparedness, and regional resilience, the Indian Coast Guard said in a press release. Also read: Quad can't exist without India, says Japanese Envoy The strategic cross-embarkation initiative sees two officers, including women officers from each participating nation, embarked onboard the United States Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, currently en route to Guam, U.S. Based on the Wilmington Declaration adopted at the QUAD Leaders' Summit in September 2024, the mission reflects the collective resolve of the QUAD to strengthen a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific. It reinforces joint maritime readiness through enhanced interoperability, domain awareness and operational coordination, the statement said.

India-Italy relations are on upward trajectory, expresses gratitude for support after Pahalgam attack: Jaishankar
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): Lauding ties between India and Italy, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that relations between the two nations are on an upward trajectory and there is new momentum of political dialogue, visits, and interest in each other's potential. He reiterated India's commitment to consolidate the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. In his remarks at Italy's National Day Celebrations in Delhi on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasised that India and Italy share maritime interests and a commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and shipping. Jaishankar said, 'Either in the Indo-Pacific or the Indo-Mediterranean, as peninsular nations, India and Italy share maritime interests and a commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and shipping. Italy's greater presence in the Indo-Pacific region as well as its undertaking activities under the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) pillar of science and technology will surely boost our cooperation further.' 'India-Italy relations are undoubtedly on an upward trajectory. There is a new momentum of political dialogue, of visits, of interest in each other's potential, which I am confident will be tapped by stakeholders. So, let me reiterate our government's commitment to consolidate the India-Italy Strategic Partnership,' he added. He said, 'Our strategic partnership with Italy is based on shared values and converging interests. This is evident in platforms like the G20. Last month, I had the opportunity to participate in the India-Italy Business Science and Tech Forum along with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tajani and Minister Bernini. The event brought together business leaders and representatives of universities and research centers of both countries to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnership across many sectors. This is also an opportunity to further boost our bilateral trade, which stands at USD 15 billion annually.' 'As the world's fastest-growing economy, fastest-growing large economy, India's tribes in various sectors open several opportunities for investment by Italian companies and you heard from the ambassador in that regard. Italy's technologies and best practices in various sectors such as clean energy, agri-tech, logistics, shipbuilding are amongst others that can be impactful as India makes the journey towards becoming a big 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047,' he added. India's right to self-defence backed globally: S Jaishankar in Italy
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday (May 28) said that India gave a 'firm, resolute and measured' reply to the Pahalgam terror attack by targeting and destroying terror camps and launchpads. He added that India's right to protect its people from terrorism has been acknowledged globally. Speaking at an event held at the Italian Embassy in New Delhi to celebrate Italy's National Day, Jaishankar thanked the Italian government for standing with India after the "barbaric" terror incident on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. 'We are thankful for Italy's solidarity and support to India following the barbaric terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. India gave a firm and resolute and measured response by destroying the relevant terror centres and launchpads,' he said. Operation Sindoor and global support Under Operation Sindoor, Indian forces carried out targeted strikes and destroyed nine terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam killings on May 7. Jaishankar said, 'India's right to defend its people against acts of terror has also been recognised by countries across the world. We believe that the world will have zero tolerance for terrorism and cross-border terrorism.' Strengthening India-Italy ties The minister highlighted that relations between India and Italy are steadily improving. 'India-Italy relations are undoubtedly on an upward trajectory,' he said.
