The Indo Daily Extra: Trump's Gamble – striking Iran, backing Israel and raising the stakes
It's a move that could ignite a regional firestorm and potentially set a worrying precedent in how countries engage in conflict. The world is braced for Iran's response after the US attacked key Iranian nuclear sites, taking a gamble by joining Israel in the biggest Western military action against the Islamic Republic since its 1979 revolution. With the damage visible from space after 30,000lb US bunker-buster bombs crashed into the mountain above Iran's Fordow nuclear site, Tehran vowed to defend itself at all costs. It fired another volley of missiles at Israel that wounded scores of people and flattened buildings in Tel Aviv. The US State Department ordered employees' family members to leave Lebanon and advised citizens elsewhere in the region to keep a low profile or restrict travel. An advisory from the US Department of Homeland Security warned of a 'heightened threat environment in the United States'. Law enforcement in major US cities stepped up patrols and deployed additional resources to religious, cultural and diplomatic sites. Tehran has so far not followed through on its threats of retaliation against the US – either by targeting US bases or trying to choke off global oil supplies – but that may not hold. The Indo Daily – Extra: Revisiting the disappearance of Annie McCarrick, as man (60s) arrested on suspicion of murder
On Thursday in Dublin, Gardaí arrested a man in relation to the murder of Annie McCarrick, who went missing on March 26, 1993. There they searched at a home in Clondalkin but have stressed that the current residents of this home are not connected in any way with Annie McCarrick or her disappearance. Ms McCarrick, originally from New York, disappeared without a trace, and the case has remained unsolved for over 32 years. The last confirmed sighting of her was in Sandymount, Dublin. The Indo Daily Extra: Pope Francis' death - his trip to Ireland, legacy and what happens next?
He was 88, and had suffered various ailments in his 12 year papacy. The death of a pope triggers a formal and lengthy period of mourning complete with many historic rituals that are completed before cardinals gather to elect a successor. These rituals include: certifying his death by calling out his name three times, sealing his apartment doors with red ribbons, and breaking his papal ring with shears. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said news of Pope Francis' death was cause for great sadness because of the departure of "a great man, a great shepherd". "I had the privilege of enjoying his friendship, his advice, his teachings, which never ceased not even during times of trial and suffering," Meloni said in a statement. "We say goodbye to the Holy Father with a heart full of sadness." Today on this Indo Daily Extra, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Kevin Doyle, Group Head of News at Mediahuis Ireland, and Vatican based reporter Paddy Agnew, to look back at his trip to Ireland in 2018, examine his legacy and ask what happens next as the Catholic Church searches for a new pontiff.
