All business establishments, companies, factories and construction firms in the four southern districts have been instructed to form internal complaints committees (ICC) in their workplaces immediately to probe sexual harassment complaints and display details of the ICC prominently in their firms, the Department of Industrial Safety and Health has said. In a statement, Joint director of Industrial Safety and Health, Tirunelveli, P. Tamizhselvan said the internal complaints committee for probing sexual harassment in workplaces should be displayed conspicuously in factories and other establishments in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi districts. The establishments carrying out construction in the four districts also should constitute ICC in their workplaces and comply with the regulations stipulated under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Names of the members of the Internal Complaints Committee and grievance redressal mechanism of the factory or establishment should be displayed in conspicuous locations and be kept visible to all employees. The Act had been enacted with the objective to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at workplace and for the redressal of such complaints. It mandated the constitution of Internal Complaints Committee by employers of all establishments employing 10 or more workers to conduct inquiry related to complaints on sexual harassment at the workplace received from their women employees. Any non-compliance on the part of the employer with respect to the provisions of the Act would entail penalty of up to ₹50,000, cautioned the note. The standard operation procedures for the establishments to deal with issued on sexual harassment had been framed by the government and, hence, all employers were instructed to strictly adhere to the guidelines, Mr. Tamizhselvan said.

In a move to strengthen workplace safety, the Joint Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Tiruchi, R. Vimala, has issued a directive to all factories and establishments engaged in building and other construction work in Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Karur districts to comply with the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. All employers in the construction sector should immediately constitute an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) at their workplaces to address grievances related to sexual harassment. According to the Act, setting up a committee is mandatory, and failure to comply can result in penalties of up to ₹50,000, she said. Employers have been instructed to display the details of ICC members and the grievance redress mechanism in prominent locations within the factory premises so they are easily visible to all employees. Additionally, Ms. Vimala referred to the government's latest guidelines, issued through G.O.(MS) No. 64 of the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment (SW3-2) department of June 18, 2025, which lay out standard operating procedures for handling sexual harassment complaints. All establishments are instructed to strictly adhere to these procedures.

The importance of ensuring safety awareness amongst contract workers in factories and adoption of safety measures and usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) were discussed at a seminar organised jointly by the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health and Tamil Nadu Chapter of National Safety Council here on Saturday. The seminar was organised to raise awareness of crucial aspects of occupational safety and equip frontline contract supervisory personnel to prevent workplace accidents, especially among contract workers, a segment often vulnerable due to lack of training and supervision. Inaugurating the seminar, S. Ananth, Director of Industrial Safety and Health and Chairman of National Safety Council, Tamil Nadu Chapter, said that usage of improper safety gadgets and minor errors resulted in major accidents. He advised them to take appropriate safety measures, including using proper extension cords to prevent electrical accidents, and urged the authorities to analyse accidents and find out the real causes and to take appropriate measures for preventing them in the future. R. Siddarthan, Additional Director of Industrial Safety and Health and Chairman of Tiruchi Subcommittee of NSC TNC, highlighted the importance of contract worker safety, stressing the role of industries in integrating contract workers into core safety systems through structured training and supervision as contract workers were mostly affected. C. Karthikeyan, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Annamalai University, and Kasi Visvanathan, Chief General Manager (Marketing), Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited, urged supervisors to ensure safety awareness, safe method of task and usage of PPE amongst contract workers. Experts from various agencies elaborated on aspects such as fire safety and emergency preparedness, supervisor's role in accident prevention, electrical safety and risk control and healthy lifestyle for industrial workers. Around 450 participants from various factories across the region participated in the seminar, according to an official press release.
