Families, friends gathered at downtown Denver's Civic Center Park for entertainment, drone show on Indy Eve

For many it was a family affair at Indy Eve at Civic Center Park in Denver For many it was a family affair at Indy Eve at Civic Center Park in Denver For many it was a family affair at Indy Eve at Civic Center Park in Denver An annual Independence Day celebration in Denver brought out thousands of people, and for many Coloradans who came to Indy Eve at Civic Center Park on Thursday night, it was a family affair. That included the Whittick sisters. All four have spent every 4th of July together. "We went a few times to see the fireworks (when we were young) but daddy kept us home usually," the youngest sister told CBS Colorado. CBS Colorado reporter Tori Mason interviews the Whittick sisters on Thursday at Civic Center Park. CBS The Whitticks were one of the first to claim their spot on the lawn at Civic Center Park for the late night drone show after the gates opened in the early evening. Many, many more families followed, as well as groups of friends, couples and individuals looking to celebrate the country's freedom. And to get some yummy food to eat. And Ty Allen was there to hand it out. His food truck Mississippi Boy Catfish & Ribs was a popular one. He said eating his food "is like going to your mother's kitchen." "The food's a great celebration that goes along with (the holiday)," he said. In addition to food trucks, Indy Eve this year featured live music, circus performers, fun shopping experiences at the Night Market and that drone show after dark. CBS Colorado anchor Michael Spencer emcees onstage during Indy Eve. CBS "When you've seen so many fireworks when you get into our age, it's kind of nice to see something different," one of the Whittick sisters said. Eyes were wide across the park at the end of the night as 300 drones lit the sky. Some of the drone light formations were made to look like the Statue of Liberty and the Mustang blue horse sculpture at Denver International Airport. For the Whittick children and grandchildren, drones to celebrate Independence Day are getting to be all they know. And 50 years from now, they'll know the best spot to watch. Right in the middle of Civic Center Park. "I hope so -- that they are as close as all of us," said another Whittick sister. Indy Eve is a CBS Colorado sponsored event.

No shortage of ways to celebrate July 4th in Denver

Indy Eve is the City of Denver's holiday celebration. It's a great way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend with live music, shopping, and a drone show, but Indy Eve is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things to do for the holiday. "There are 260 different juried artists at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. I feel like if you've lived in Denver for any period of time, you have a piece from that festival in your home," said Taylor Shields, Director of PR & Communications with VISIT Denver. (credit: CBS) The Cherry Creek Arts Festival is a long time July 4th tradition. Set up over several blocks in Cherry Creek North, the Festival attracts artists from across the country. Fan Expo Denver is going on all weekend at the Colorado Convention Center. It's the ultimate fan experience with celebrities, cosplay, comics, anime, gaming and so much more. "So another tradition, Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms always play Fourth of July up at Red Rocks. That's just an amazing place. They're always a fun band," Shields said. In addition to Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms, Vulfpeck is playing Red Rocks on July 5th. Red, White & ROCK! is going on at Hudson Gardens & Event Center, which features a 13-piece yacht rock band. "What's more American than baseball and fireworks? The Rockies are having their fireworks show on the fourth and the fifth. The Rapids actually have a really fun 4th Fest with kids events, bouncy houses, soccer, darts, and fireworks this weekend," Shields explained. McGregor Square is hosting a double feature of Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick. All of Denver's museums will be showing their latest exhibitions. "There's also like really fun red, white and blue bar crawls that are going on Downtown," Shields added. Find out what will be different at Indy Eve celebration on Thursday at Civic Center Park Find out what will be different at Indy Eve celebration on Thursday at Civic Center Park Find out what will be different at Indy Eve celebration on Thursday at Civic Center Park Denver has hosted an Independence Eve celebration in Civic Center Park for the last 15 years. Last year, the Civic Center Conservancy reimagined the celebration to make it more interactive and family-friendly. This year they're building on those changes. "Two things we're really excited about that we're introducing. We have the Circus Foundry performing United in Light, so what does that mean? LED circus performers. When I told my kids about it they were so excited," said Eric Lazzari, Executive Director of the Civic Center Conservancy. "Also, earlier in the day, the Art Garage is going to be doing arts and crafts with the kids right on the north side of the Greek Theater." Denver's Indy Eve drone show was a big draw Wednesday night at Civic Center Park with people celebrating America's independence. CBS Last year, organizers traded out fireworks for a drone show, which will be back again this year. "People loved it. They loved the story telling. They loved being able to guess what it is, so we're bringing them back this year. The big change with the drone show this year is we're going to ask people to look toward the southern sky over the Art Museum and the library as opposed to the Capitol," Lazzari explained. The Night Market is moving too. It will be on the side of the Greek Theater and along 14th Avenue. There will also be more vendors offering food, drinks, and goods. The schedule of events looks like this: 5:00 p.m. Doors Open 5:00 - 10:00 p.m. Night Market 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. DJ Cyn in the Greek Theater 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Kids Art Zone with Art Garage 8:00 - 8:10 p.m. Denver Mayor speaks 8:10 - 8:50 p.m. Colorado Symphony Brass & Percussion Ensemble 9:00 - 9:35 p.m. United in Light performed by Circus Foundry 9:40 - 9:55 p.m. Drone Show Indy Eve is free and open to the public, however the park will be fenced and all attendees will have to go through a security screening at the designated entrances. Attendees are allowed to bring in food that is packed in clear plastic bags and pre-cut. Non-alcoholic beverages area allowed as long as they are factory-sealed in non-glass containers. Pets and assistance animals are not welcome at this event. Attendees are also prohibited from bringing glass, hard-sided coolers, large purses or bags, weapons, fireworks, sparklers, or smoke bombs, sports equipment, cigarettes or other tobacco products, or skateboards, bikes, or skates. "It's always a great time. What we love is that it really kicks off the weekend here in Denver, and it's our unique way of celebrating this holiday in a super family-friendly way. Come on Downtown, we'd love to see you there," Lazzari added. LINK: For more detailed information about Indy Eve Indy Eve is Thursday, July 3, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Civic Center Park.
