Windsor's Best Western workers stage ‘unity picket' in Ingersoll

Tammy Smith, the chairperson for unionized workers at the Best Western in Windsor, said members remain 'upbeat' five weeks into a strike. Seen in Ingersoll, Ont. on July 5, 2025. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) Striking workers from the Best Western Plus Windsor Waterfront travelled to Ingersoll on Saturday to picket outside another property owned by the employer. Unifor Local 195 members held an information picket outside Elm Hurst Inn and Spa, which is owned by Shmuel Farhi of Farhi Holdings Corporation, the same owner of the Best Western. The two sides have been in a stalemate since workers walked off the job on June 1, largely due to differences over wages. 'We just want to educate the public what Farhi has been doing all along,' said Emile Nabbout, president of Local 195. Nabbout described the picket as a 'sign of solidarity' with Unifor members in the Ingersoll area. 'This is a unity, trying to call on Farhi, the owner of Farhi Holdings, to come to the table and bargain a fair deal for our employees who have been on the picket line for almost five weeks,' Nabbout said. Windsor workers picket in Ingersoll Best Western Members from Unifor Local 195 travelled to Ingersoll, Ont. to strike outside the Elm Hurst Inn & Spa, which is owned by Farhi Holdings Corporation, the mutual owner of the Best Western. Seen in Ingersoll, Ont. on July 5, 2025. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) CTV News reached Farhi by phone on Saturday afternoon, but he declined to comment. The union has said the majority of members make about $18.02 per hour, and the company is acting out of 'greed' by not raising wages. Tammy Smith, who works at the Best Western, said union members were invited by those in the Ingersoll area. 'It was the people in this area that said, welcome to this beautiful property here in [Ingersoll] that is owned by Farhi Holdings, and let's just let people know what's going on in Windsor,' Smith said. Striking workers include staff from the front desk, maintenance, and housekeeping. Current wages make it difficult for workers to make ends meet, Smith said. 'I'm not saying that $20 an hour they're going to make their bills, but it's a little bit easier for these people to get ahead,' Smith noted. Smith said workers were dealt a 'slap in the face' by the company when their demands were not taken seriously. Despite about five weeks of job action, she added there remains an 'upbeat' demeanour among workers. 'We take the jobs really, really seriously. And we feel like this is just an utter disrespect to send us out to the streets instead of staying at the negotiating table and bargaining with us,' Smith said. Commenting about the Ingersoll picket, Ironwood Management Corp., who manages Best Western for Farhi, said: 'The move by the union to start attacking the guests of other Farhi owned businesses is disappointing. People are intelligent enough to tell the difference between legitimate labour disputes and meaningless Union rhetoric. Unifor is only risking their own embarrassment by trying to convince anyone that the Employer has been anything but fair with its employees.' Workers previously rejected an offer after the employer forced the vote, calling it their 'final offer,' at the time. -With files from CTV News London's Brent Lale.

Toronto Sceptres draft night trade brings Ella Shelton back to plenty of familiarity

The newest veteran defender on the Toronto Sceptres looked down at the colours and crest on the jersey she was wearing and wondered aloud how long it was going to take to get used to them. Article content But the colours are going to be the only uncomfortable thing for Ella Shelton as she makes the move from the New York Sirens to the Sceptres. Article content Article content Shelton, 27, was acquired on draft night for the Sceptres third-overall pick and their third-rounder, 27 th overall. Article content It brings the Ingersoll native back to some familiar company in national team GM Gina Kingsbury, head coach Troy Ryan and players like Renata Fast, Blayre Turnbull, Emma Maltais and Natalie Spooner, who Shelton has shared plenty of days and nights with during the international portion of her career. Three world championship gold medals and an Olympic gold medal are just some of the spoils from playing with that group. Article content On top of that familiarity, she's now just a two-hour drive from the family farm, is back living in the same city with one of her brothers and has an extensive family support system throughout the area from Toronto all the way back to the family home in Ingersoll. Article content Article content Shelton learned of the deal just before Cassie Campbell took to the stage at the brand new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on the outskirts of Ottawa early on draft night and drew gasps from the crowd with the news that Shelton had just become a member of the Sceptres. Article content The gasps may have also been about New York earning the right to claim the top two forwards in the draft after adding Patty Kazmaier winner Casey O'Brien with the third pick after selecting the imposing Kristyna Kaltounkova with the night's first pick. Article content Article content All Shelton needed to see was the joy in the faces of the veteran Sceptres in the crowd as the cameras panned to them to know she was going to be very happy with the deal. Article content Article content 'I think it's really exciting to be back home,' Shelton said Friday while surrounded by microphones and cameras in the Sceptres locker room. 'I wouldn't trade my two years in New York for anything. I think they have done a lot for me there, too, but I'm excited for a new opportunity and a new space and see what I can do for Toronto.' Article content In joining Toronto, Shelton becomes a teammate of the player she most models her game after in Fast, the newly minted PWHL defender of the year. Article content 'I can't say enough good things about Renata Fast,' Shelton said. 'She is one that took me under her wing when I graduated from college. She was one I could reach out to and ask any question and I didn't feel out of place. And then just seeing her work ethic over the past couple of years has just been tremendous and very motivational for myself.

Town of Ingersoll announces growing industrial development

Ingersoll's industrial landscape is growing, as the Town of Ingersoll announced the official groundbreaking of West Oxford Industrial Park. The development, in partnership with 214 Carson Co., is located along Highway 401. With build options ranging from 60,000 to 1 million square feet and a 56.2 acre pad-ready site, the park will allow more businesses to come to the community. Mayor Brian Petrie of the Town of Ingersoll said the project will bring lasting benefits to Ingersoll. "This development will create valuable employment opportunities and drive economic growth for our community," said Petrie. Brooke Hayward, Chief Operating Officer of 214 Carson Co. said the development is a bold step forward for not just Ingersoll, but also the broader Southwestern economy. 'This development reflects our belief in the strength of this region, the talent of its workforce and the opportunity ahead for businesses that choose to build here,' said Hayward.
