AFL 2025: Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge discusses future of luckless midfielder Adam Treloar

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge is optimistic Adam Treloar has football beyond 2025 despite the out-of-contract midfielder suffering yet another cruel injury setback. Treloar's luckless season took another hit on Sunday when the experienced ball winner damaged his calf in the Bulldogs' powerful win over Richmond. The 32-year-old has now suffered three soft-tissue injuries this season and could be sidelined for as long as two months. Beveridge is yet to discuss the future with Treloar but hopes there's footy left on the midfielder's career clock. 'We'll worry about that later on, his future beyond this year is something that'll take care of itself in deliberations as we get towards the end of the year,' Beveridge said. 'I always hope so with a player as influential as Adam, but I haven't actually sat down and spoken to him about the emotional toll his injuries have had on him this year. 'The last one when he came out after his first game surprised him a bit, we'll support him and keep him in it.' Beveridge denied the possibility of Treloar seeking treatment overseas but said the Bulldogs would grant him time to process the emotional toll of another injury. 'Because he is going to be out for such a period of time, we've just given him a couple of days to just chill and we'll see him in circulation more from next week,' he said. 'He's always been such a resilient player; resilient you always associate with the head and heart – durability aspect is the physical makeup and how the game can bring you undone at times. 'But up here (head) and in here (heart), he's always been able to process it and drive towards his next game – that will be our intent to help him with that.' Treloar is poised to break an unwanted record: his lowest tally of games in a single season. Beveridge said there was 'no black and white answer' to why Treloar was struggling to stay fit and hoped his latest calf issue was the last. 'He's always been a complex consideration, Adam, over his whole journey; he's an absolute pro but his body has always been a bit temperamental,' Beveridge said. 'This time around the calf side of things, you wouldn't say it has just bobbed up, maybe a player who is experienced and mature is in a phase of his AFL life where he is a bit more predisposed to injury. 'Maybe that's the case, he's processing that; there's no black and white answer to it because beyond recovering from this one he might be OK. 'Hopefully, he continues to go to the line and rehabs this injury like he has every other one … it remains to be seen how long our season goes for.' The Western Bulldogs travel for the penultimate time this home-and-away season when they tackle the in-form Sydney at the SCG.

DWP offering three month lifeline for 150,000 carer's set to lose benefits – will you be impacted?

Carer's allowance is a benefit for those who provide at least 35 hours of unpaid care each week, usually for a disabled or sick relative. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Around 150,000 carers will no longer qualify for carer's allowance due to stricter PIP eligibility rules Credit: Getty It is currently paid at £83.30 per week, and carers can earn a second income from a job. However, if they earn more than £196 a week, they lose the allowance entirely. One of the main ways to qualify for carer's allowance is by caring for someone who receives the daily living component of personal independence payments (PIP). In March, the government announced plans to tighten the rules for claiming PIP in an effort to save £5billion a year on welfare spending and encourage more people to return to work. On Wednesday, the government introduced the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill to Parliament. This proposed law outlines plans to make PIP eligibility rules stricter. Currently, people qualify for PIP by earning enough points across various tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, or managing money. Under the new rules, applicants will need to score at least four points on one specific daily living activity to qualify. This change means that having minor difficulties across several areas may no longer be enough to qualify for PIP. This change could see about 800,000 people lose out, with an average loss of £4,500 per year, according to government's own impact assessment. As a knock-on effect, around 150,000 carers will no longer qualify for carer's allowance due to the stricter eligibility rules. Understanding carer's allowance However, the Bill also introduces measures to protect existing claimants who might lose their payments. If someone loses their PIP under the new rules, they will continue to receive payments for 13 weeks as a safety net. This 13-week grace period also applies to those receiving carer's allowance. The 13-week transition period is longer than the four weeks originally planned by the government. What is carer's allowance? CARER'S allowance is a UK benefit designed to help people who have caring responsibilities for more than 35 hours each week. Those eligible get £83.30 a week paid directly into bank accounts. To qualify, the person you care for must already get one of these benefits: Personal independence payment (PIP) - daily living component Disability living allowance - the middle or highest care rate Attendance allowance Constant attendance allowance at or above the normal maximum rate with an Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Constant attendance allowance at the basic (full day) rate with a war disablement pension Armed forces independence payment You don't have to be related to the person or live with them to apply. But if you share caring responsibilities with someone else, only one of you can make a claim. The type of care you provide can vary, but includes things such as helping with washing or cooking, taking the person to medical appointments or helping out with household tasks such as shopping or organising bills. To get the benefit, you must also meet a certain set of criteria: You must be 16 or over You have to spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone You need to have been in England, Scotland or Wales for at least two of the last three years (this does not apply if you're a refugee or have humanitarian protection status) You must normally live in England, Scotland or Wales or live abroad as a member of the armed forces (you might still be eligible if you're moving to or already living in an EEA country or Switzerland) You cannot be in full-time education You must not be studying for 21 hours a week or more You cannot be subject to immigration control You will also have to meet certain earnings criteria in order to get the benefit. Your earnings must also be £196 or less a week after tax, National Insurance and expenses. You can apply for the carer's allowance online by visiting Despite the longer grace period, campaigners, including the disability equality charity Scope, have warned that this extended period is only a temporary fix. They argue that once the payments stop, disabled people will still face the same extra costs of living. Food bank network Trussell said: "The last-minute details on protections offer something for a small proportion of people, but even they will still see a real-terms cut. The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill has also set out how the government proposes to slash incapacity benefits offered to those on Universal Credit. It also includes a proposal to hike the Universal Credit standard allowance above inflation over the next four years.

Jofra Archer ‘absolutely desperate' for England Test return, says Ben Stokes

England captain Ben Stokes says Jofra Archer is 'absolutely desperate' to face India this summer, resuming a Test career that has been on hold for more than four years. England looked to have discovered a generational talent when the Barbados-born paceman burst on to the international scene in 2019, but he has been beset by a litany of injury problems and played the last of his 13 Tests in February 2021. It is hoped he will make his first-class return for Sussex against Durham on Sunday, part of a plan that could see him restored to Stokes' squad at some point during a five-match series which begins at Headingley on Friday. There has been an understandable sense of caution about Archer's latest rehabilitation, which was further delayed by a broken thumb, but the bowler himself has made his own intentions clear – at one stage floating a hurried return in last month's one-off game against Zimbabwe. 'He's been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on. Randomly, a couple of times, he would just send me a text saying, 'Zim?',' said Stokes. 'I was like, 'Let's just hold it there, all right. I know you're in a good spot right now, but let's not just rush into it'. 'He's obviously had a horrific time with injuries, but he's had some good amount of cricket, albeit in the white-ball formats. 'It's really exciting for England, but also more exciting for Jof that he's in a position now where we're able to have a plan in place and hopefully him get through something to actually be considered for selection for Test cricket.' Having Archer back in the pace armoury would be a massive boost for England in the midst of a seven-month period that sees them take on their two biggest rivals over 10 eagerly-anticipated games. Win against India in the coming weeks, then reclaim the Ashes Down Under and Stokes would go down as one of his country's greatest ever skippers, but he is not ready to think in those terms. 'There's always a different buzz coming up against India and Australia in particular, purely because of how big those series are,' he said. 'Away from the dressing room, we know what these series mean compared to other ones. We do understand that. 'But defining a career as England captain isn't something that I sit there and really think about, honestly. If that's what I'm really bothered about, in my opinion it's just completely and utterly selfish and that ain't me. 'I don't tend to worry myself generally about what other people are going to say or think about what I've done as a captain at the end of it. 'I'd like to think that since I've done this role I've done it wholeheartedly and thrown everything I possibly have into doing it.'
