Yordan Alvarez injury update: Astros slugger to see specialist after setback in broken right hand
The Houston Astros are off to another dominant start this season. Entering play Wednesday, the team sits at 51-34 and holds a seven-game lead in the American League West. And if that wasn't impressive enough, they've been able to get there despite a lengthy absence from their best hitter. Yordan Alvarez has been sidelined since early May due to a hand injury, and it doesn't sound like he's going to be back soon. Advertisement Alvarez experienced a setback in his broken right hand Tuesday, and will see a specialist to try and solve the issue. After sitting for nearly two months, Alvarez started participating in workouts in June. He took swings at the team's complex Monday, but reported pain the following day. Astros general manager Dana Brown said the team wouldn't rush Alvarez back following the setback, per ESPN. "We're not going to try to push it or force him through anything. We're just going to allow him to heal and get a little bit more answers as to what steps we take next." It's a disappointing development for Alvarez, who seemed to be nearing his return. On Sunday, Brown expressed some optimism that Alvarez could return in time for the team's upcoming series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 4. The setback makes it extremely unlikely Alvarez will take part in that series. It also marks yet another troubling trend for the Astros' medical staff, which originally misdiagnosed Alvarez's injury as a muscle strain. The team experienced the same mistake last season, when star outfielder Kyle Tucker missed significant time after the team initially misdiagnosed his shin injury. Advertisement When healthy, Alvarez is one of the best hitters in the majors. The 28-year-old holds a career slash line of .295/.387/.573 over seven years in the majors. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2019, is a three-time All-Star and has finished in the top-10 in MVP voting twice. He's also excelled when the Astros needed him most, and has a .294/.393/.551 slash line in 60 playoff games with the franchise. The Astros found a way to thrive despite Alvarez's injury. The team posted a .536 winning percentage in May after Alvarez went down, and followed that up by going 19-7 in June, propelling the Astros to the top of the AL West standings. Alvarez will undoubtedly provide a huge boost to the team once he's ready to return. That should be a scary thought to every other AL team, which has failed to keep the Astros down despite the loss of their best hitter.

Alex Bregman's promising injury update comes with a catch
The post Alex Bregman's promising injury update comes with a catch appeared first on ClutchPoints. Boston Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman is currently dealing with a quad injury. The Red Sox infielder is hoping to return sooner rather than later. On Friday, Bregman provided an encouraging update, however, he declined to provide an official injury timeline, via Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. Advertisement 'Alex Bregman says his injury is healing faster than expected and he might not even need to go on a rehab assignment once he feels he's ready to play. Declined to offer any timetable, though he remains hopeful to return before the All-Star break,' Cerullo wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The lack of an official timeline for a return leaves the situation somewhat uncertain. However, Bregman's comments about his injury healing at a faster rate than expected is promising without question. Bregman's injury situation will continue to receive updates over the next few weeks. If he does indeed return before the All-Star break, though, the infielder could be back within the next month. The 31-year-old — who is in his first season in Boston — was hitting .299/.385/.553 through 51 games before suffering the injury. Bregman also hit 11 home runs and 17 doubles to go along with 35 RBI and a .938 OPS. Advertisement In other words, Alex Bregman was making the adjustment to a new team without much trouble. He played in Houston with the Astros for his entire career (2016-2024) before the '25 campaign, so some wondered how he would perform in Boston. The results were certainly encouraging before he endured the injury. Barring any setbacks, Bregman should be able to re-join the Red Sox's lineup within the next few weeks. Boston needs the boost — the Red Sox currently hold a 34-36 record which places them fourth in the American League East standings. We will continue to monitor and provide updates on Alex Bregman's injury status as they are made available. French injury worries mount ahead of first All Blacks Test
Wing Gabin Villiere (C) is one of several injury worries for France head coach Fabine Galthie ahead of the first Test with New Zealand (Christophe SIMON) Fullback Cheikh Tiberghien and wing Gabin Villiere are injury worries for France days away from their first Test with New Zealand in Dunedin. Both were expected to be named by Fabien Galthie in the starting line-up for the first of three Tests on Saturday. Advertisement Villiere, one of the more experienced players in a squad lacking many of the stalwarts of the Six Nations Grand Slam winning side, sat out training after feeling pain in the warm-up. Tiberghien limped off during the training session with a right thigh problem and had it strapped. His Bayonne clubmate Tom Spring, who can play either fullback or wing, sat out the training session. The issues add to Galthie's selection problems. Leo Barre has yet to join the squad as he recovers from the injury that ruled him out of the tour warm-up match with England. "There were some problems during training but we have yet to hear back from the medical staff," said assistant coach Laurent Sempere. Advertisement To make up for the absences of Villiere, Tiberghien and Spring, Galthie slotted in Theo Attissogbe at fullback and Emilien Gailleton and Alivereti Duguivalu on the wings. The squad will be strengthened for the second and third Tests -- in Wellington on July 12 and Hamilton a week later -- by five members of the two Top 14 finalists, Toulouse and Bordeaux-Begles. They will be named when the results of fitness tests performed after Saturday's final are known. Toulouse retained their title after beating Champions Cup winners Bordeaux-Begles 39-33. fs/ig/pi/pst

Viktor Hovland Shares Sad Injury Update After Withdrawing From Travelers Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Two holes into the final round of the Travelers Championship, rising PGA Tour star Viktor Hovland was forced to withdraw due to a sudden neck injury. Advertisement The Norwegian had been in strong form, shooting a 63 on Saturday, and was tied for 14th heading into Sunday's round at TPC River Highlands. Hovland described the injury in detail post-withdrawal, recalling that he felt a minor twinge while warming up on the range. 'Hit one shot and then felt a little bit in my neck, but it didn't…felt fine,' he told reporters on Sunday. However, as he took his next driver swing just minutes before his tee time, he heard and felt his neck 'crack.' 'I don't know exactly what happened…but just couldn't move,' Hovland added. Advertisement He managed to complete two holes, parring the first and bogeying the second, before conceding, explaining: 'I tried to play, but it just wasn't doable…could hardly stand over the ball and move my neck. Couldn't really do anything.' Hovland's withdrawal was the latest in a series of unfortunate exits at Travelers, including Jordan Spieth (shoulder), Si Woo Kim (back), and Eric Cole (illness). Hovland faces an uncertain recovery timeline. Treatments such as rest, physiotherapy and imaging scans will be essential in determining next steps.
