Fauja Singh hit-and-run: Accused NRI says he learnt victim's identity only after seeing TV news; claims he fled out of fear

Fauja Singh (Photo: X) NEW DELHI: The man accused in the hit-and-run that killed Fauja Singh — the world's oldest marathon runner — told police he realised only later that the victim was Singh, after seeing television reports about his death. 'In questioning he revealed that it was only in the night that he came to know that the person he hit was Fauja Singh, after TV channels reported his death, which caused him stress and tension,' a senior police official said. Police in Punjab arrested the suspect, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, from his home in Dasupur village, near Kartarpur in Jalandhar district, on Tuesday night. Dhillon, 26, told investigators he had been returning from Bhogpur when the accident occurred. Rather than stopping to help Singh, he fled the scene — an action police say could have cost the elderly runner his life. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash driving has been registered. Jalandhar Rural SSP H S Virk said that an eyewitness had initially reported the vehicle involved could be either an Innova or a Fortuner. 'We recovered a damaged part of the vehicle and when we checked with Toyota agencies, we were told that it could be an old Fortuner of 2009, 10, 11 models. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 'Удобните' обувки, които избират хората над 40 години ZAROTRAVEL® КУПИ СЕГА Undo After which from CCTV footage, we zeroed in on a Fortuner which had a damaged headlight. Then we found the registration number of the vehicle from another CCTV footage. The vehicle was sold out a couple of times,' he said. The accused had been living in Canada for the last eight years, police said, having first gone there on a tourist visa before securing a work permit. He worked in construction and his permit was valid until 2027. Dhillon had come to India on 23 June using an emergency certificate, having lost his passport. 'He should have stopped there to help the injured but he sped away and we registered a case for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and of rash driving,' SSP Virk said. Dhillon reportedly told police that he was frightened and drove off in panic after hitting Singh. 'He said that he sped away from the scene as he was himself scared after the accident,' Virk said. Officials said the guilt set in later, once he saw news of Fauja Singh's death. He was located at his residence, and the vehicle — with visible damage — was also found there, officials said. Police confirmed that Dhillon had no prior criminal cases against him. Singh's son, Harbinder Singh, said the family may have acted differently had the driver helped. 'We would not have pursued complaint against him had my father survived. But he should have stopped, if a mistake had happened, he did not have any enmity with us,' he said.

Punjab Police arrest SUV Driver in hit-and-run case of 114-year-old marathon legend Fauja Singh

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police has arrested a 26-year-old Canadian-based Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Amarjit Singh Dhillon, behind the tragic hit-and-run case involving 114-year-old Fauja Singh, famously known as the "Turbaned Tornado" and the world's oldest marathon runner. Dhillon, a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur, Jalandhar district, was arrested on Tuesday night. His white Toyota Fortuner (registration number PB-20C-7100), which was involved in the accident, has been seized. A case under Sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Adampur Police Station. The incident occurred on July 14, when Singh, following his routine afternoon walk, was struck by a speeding vehicle while crossing the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway near his native village, Beas. He was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar by locals but succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jalandhar Rural, Harvinder Singh Virk, said the police launched an intensive investigation after recovering fragments from the scene, including parts of the left headlight. CCTV footage from nearby highways helped trace the SUV, which had visible damage matching the parts found at the site. 'About 35 vehicles had passed through that stretch around the time of the accident,' Virk stated. 'With eyewitness accounts suggesting it was a Toyota Fortuner or Innova, we narrowed down the footage and identified the suspect vehicle.'

Vijay's party leader claims life threat, says DMK-flagged car circled office often

Aadhav Arjuna, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam's (TVK) general secretary for election campaign management, has alleged a serious threat to his life, citing repeated surveillance by unknown individuals. The matter came to light after his legal representative filed a formal complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, T Nagar in Chennai, on July to the complaint, a series of suspicious incidents took place on July 10 outside Arjuna's office on Kasthuri Rangan Road, Alwarpet. The complaint alleges that a yellow autorickshaw carrying men wielding weapons was seen making repeated visits to the vicinity of the office at various intervals during the one instance, two unidentified men reportedly alighted from the autorickshaw and were observed surveying the office premises. When questioned by a bystander, they refused to disclose their identity and left. Later the same day, the autorickshaw allegedly returned twice more — once with three occupants, and again with seven to eight individuals — each time circling the area before departing. A nearby resident reportedly witnessed all three incidents and confirmed the suspicious movements. The complaint also mentions the unexplained presence of an Innova vehicle displaying a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party flag, which entered the dead-end street near the office without making any known visits or halts. This, the complainant stated, further raised concerns of targeted monitoring or reconnaissance linked to Arjuna's political Col. Ajay Kumar Pandey (Retired), who is the security advisor for Aadhav Arjuna, is said to have conducted a preliminary inquiry and prepared an incident report, which was also submitted along with the letter urges the police to treat the matter as urgent, investigate the recurring appearances of the autorickshaw and the DMK-flagged vehicle, and assess the potential threat to Arjuna's safety.
