Coronation Street's Mick star breaks silence as killer returns to cobbles

Coronation Street's Joe Layton addressed fans who reached out to him following his dramatic return to the ITV soap as it was confirmed that his character, Mick Michaelis, would be leaving the cobbles Coronation Street's Joe Layton has responded to the flood of messages he's received following his dramatic comeback to the cobbles, providing a lift amid news of his impending departure. Viewers of the ITV soap were under the impression that his character, Mick Michaelis, was securely locked up after being arrested for the savage murder of PC Craig Tinker back in May. However, during Monday's (July 14) episode of Corrie, the killer was seen making a daring escape from Weatherfield Prison in an attempt to reunite with his family, reports the Manchester Evening News. Mick was spotted crawling under a laundry van before later emerging onto the street, having been tipped off by Brody that Joanie was at Weatherfield High. When Brody, who is helping him escape, informs Mick - who has crawled under a laundry van before later appearing on the street - he shows up at the school. But Sally Metcalfe has already collected Joanie after the young girl is distressed by her peers' remarks about her parents, with Lou now also incarcerated for her assault on Gary Windass. Daniel Osbourne and Mrs Crawshaw are then taken aback when they come face to face with Mick, who insists they hand over Joanie. Upon learning that Joanie has left, Mick locks the pair in the office and makes a run for it. He soon heads for the street, where Sally is introducing Joanie to Underworld. With Kit now aware of Mick's escape, he's also on the chase and spots him heading towards the factory. Bursting into the factory to rescue Joanie, Mick took Tim and Sarah Platt hostage in the office. Kit was hot on his heels, and tensions soared as Mick realised that Joanie had been sneaked onto the roof by Sally in a desperate escape attempt. Sally could be seen attempting to soothe the young girl as pandemonium broke out below them, with Mick wounding Kit and leaving him in a critical condition as he pursued his quarry to the rooftop, where a terrified yet resolute Sally faced him down. In her final stand against Mick, Sally vowed to take care of Joanie and Shanice, promising them a brighter future, just as Mick surrendered to the police. Social media was abuzz with reactions, with heaps of praise being lavished on Joe's portrayal of Mick. Taking to his own social platforms, Joe expressed his gratitude for an Inside Soap Awards nomination and encouraged fans to vote, posting: "Very grateful for this nomination and all the kind messages you've sent about Mick the ******. Vote all thinks @coronation street," along with a link to the 2025 voting page for the awards ceremony. Joe's six-month tenure as Mick has earned him a nomination for Best Villain at the coveted awards. Competing for the title are Corrie's Claire Sweeney (Cassie Plummer) and EastEnders' Jonny Freeman (Reiss Colwell) and Navin Chowdhry (Nish Panesar). Also included in the category are Emmerdale's Ned Porteous (Joe Tate) and Oliver Farnworth (John Sugden), alongside Hollyoaks' Gemma Bissix (Clare Devine) and Jeremy Sheffield (Jeremy Blake).

Inside Soap Awards 2025 nominations are REVEALED with iconic category set to make surprise return after six years

The nominations for the 2025 Inside Soap Awards have been revealed, with one category set to make a surprise return after six years away. After a string of iconic characters have bid farewell in recent months, bosses have brought back the Best Exit award. A whole host of gripping storylines and showstopping moments, along with the iconic characters at the forefront of them, lead this year's nominations. These include Corrie's Debbie being diagnosed with dementia, Phil's mental health struggles in EastEnders, Robert crashing Aaron and John's wedding in Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks ' hard-hitting teen sexual exploitation plot. It comes at a time where many of TV's biggest soaps are facing huge shake-ups, with ITV favourites Coronation Street and Emmerdale set to have their weekly episode counts slashed in 2026. Once again, a string of big names will battle it out for Best Actor, including Corrie's Jack P Shepherd, Emmerdale's Danny Miller and EastEnders' Steve McFadden. Meanwhile nominees for Best Actress include Corrie's Sue Devanet, EastEnders' Lacey Turner, and Hollyoaks' Jennifer Metcalfe. Nominations for Best Storyline once again include Debbie's battle with dementia on Corrie, Phil's mental health struggles in EastEnders, Joe Tate's fight for survival on Emmerdale, and Cleo's shocking abuse ordeal in Hollyoaks. 'The Inside Soap Awards remain the only trophies of their kind to be voted for entirely by the real experts – the soap viewing public,' said Inside Soap magazine editor Sarah Ellis. ' 'Over 90,000 soap fans vote each and every year; and in addition to our list of nominees, our Soap Superstar category allows readers to put forward their own suggestions of who they feel deserves to be honoured. 'The past 12 months have been an epic time in soap, and I can't wait to see who the readers of Inside Soap have decided to crown their favourites this year.' 2025 also sees the return of the Best Exit category, paying tribute to those characters who've either met tragic ends, or moved on to pastures new this year. 'Sadly, we've had to say goodbye to some truly beloved soap characters over the past 12 months,' Sarah said. ''Who didn't cry their eyes out at Martin's shock death during EastEnders' live episode? 'And we're still not over poor Craig's tragic demise in Corrie, or the loss of Leyla and Amy in the devastating Emmerdale limo crash. But it's up to the fans which exit will get their vote.' Voting for the Inside Soap Awards 2025 opens at midday on Tuesday, July 8, and winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony in London this September. Fans can vote online by visiting or by filling in the voting form in the Inside Soap magazine. The move comes after it was revealed earlier this year how ITV bosses are slashing their soaps' episode count. Emmerdale currently airs six episodes weekly, Monday to Friday with a double bill on Thursdays. Meanwhile, Coronation Street also airs six episodes per week, with two episodes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Next year, only five 30-minute episodes of each show will air - a real terms cut to soap broadcast time of 17%. Bosses will introduce a soaps power hour from Monday to Friday with 30-minute Emmerdale episodes airing at 8pm and 30-minute Coronation Street episodes airing at 8:30pm. However, the start of the new 2026 schedule will at least be marked in style, as both soaps embark on an ambitious, never-before-seen stunt as part of a week of special episodes. Defending the changes, ITV's Managing Director of Media and Entertainment Kevin Lygo said: 'The new commissioning pattern is viewer-led. 'We already give more choice than ever to viewers on how they watch us through ITVX and we want to present their favourite soap to them, in the most digestible way.' 'In a world where there is so much competition for viewers' time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule, to keep up to date with the shows.' Over on the BBC, fans can watch new episodes of EastEnders from 6am on iPlayer before they're broadcast that evening on BBC One. Pet owners warned as Emmerdale airs dog attack storyline

Fans of the ITV soap will see vet Paddy Kirk hospitalised after being injured by two pet pooches owned by a new arrival farmer Celia, played by Death in Paradise's Jaye Griffiths. The plot will follow Celia's response to the attack, which Emmerdale insiders say will show her 'true colours'. Paddy will be injured in a dog attack. (Image: ITV) One legal expert has heralded ITV's hit rural drama for shining a light on the important and growing issue of canine attacks. Lara O'Donnell, head of personal injury at CEL Solicitors, said: 'Incidents with violent dogs are on the rise and as much as we're a nation of pet lovers, owners need to realise the responsibility they have when they own an animal. 'A dog owner's fleeting moment of negligence can lead to life-changing injuries, both physical and mental, for victims. 'It's crucial that owners take proactive steps to train their pets and ensure they are secure. If a dog has displayed signs of violent behaviour, ensure its kept on a lead in public and maybe even muzzled.' There were 30,539 offences of a dog injuring a person or guide dog in 2023, up from 25,291 in 2022, according to police data. 'Not all dog attacks are reported to the police, so the actual number of incidents could be higher,' Ms O'Donnnell added. 'Attacks should be reported as soon as possible, so steps are taken to ensure the owner of the dog takes responsibility for their pet. 'Owners need to ensure they have adequate pet insurance, that includes third party liability. 'This means if a dog did cause harm to another person, the owner can afford to compensate the victim.' After a dog attack, victims may seek compensation for their injuries, especially if they have to take time off work. Recommended Reading: Who plays Paddy Dingle? Dominic Brunt has played the role of Paddy in Emmerdale since 1997. The 55-year-old has been nominated in various categories at the British Soap Awards, Inside Soap Awards and the National Television Awards for his portrayal of the Yorkshire vet. Emmerdale will air tonight on ITV1 at the later time of 7.30pm.
