Curbing drug menace is not rocket science: Karnataka Home Minister

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Saturday that curbing the drug menace is not rocket science and asked the police officers to put in focused efforts. He also conducted a progress review and then addressed the officers. On the issue of drug control, he said that the Chief Minister has issued strict directions. 'Curbing the drug menace is not rocket science. The department has sufficient strength. Investigating officers must involve themselves deeply in drug-related cases. In any case, the prime accused must never be spared,' he said while addressing officers on the second day of the senior police officers' annual review meeting held at the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG and IGP). 'Different districts face different kinds of problems. Officers must work on the ground. Issues such as hate crimes and communal clashes may arise. Festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Muharram come with their own challenges. If officers don't observe these challenges firsthand, what is the point?' he questioned. Referring to crimes against Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and children, he noted that the conviction rate remains low. Investigating officers must consult public prosecutors and take necessary guidance. 'Some officers are not following this, and this is one of the reasons why accused persons are escaping the law,' he warned. 'To prevent atrocities against SC and ST communities, 33 DCRE (District Crime Record and Enforcement) police stations have been set up across the state. These must be made effective,' he said. Parameshwara added that if the 'Police at Your Doorstep' initiative is successfully implemented, the Karnataka Police Department will earn national recognition. 'When police visit homes, they understand the issues in their respective station jurisdictions. This also helps in preventing crimes,' he said. Parameshwara stressed that many key issues of the Police Department must be discussed. Expert consultations should be held regarding various problems, and appropriate suggestions should be sought to aid investigations. The structure of the annual review meeting should be redesigned with this aim in mind. District-level progress reviews are already being conducted at the Range level. At the annual conference, it is enough to present state-level data, he added. 'New technologies must be adopted. Karnataka Police should set an example for the rest of the country,' Parameshwara stated. He further added that the police must work more effectively, in line with the expectations of the government and the public. 'When citizens come to the station, their complaints should be accepted without making them run around repeatedly. Police must respond in a people-friendly manner,' he said. He further stated that officers and personnel of the police department must be provided with advanced technological training. Senior officers must think seriously and act accordingly.

MP cop didn't serve notice as asked. HC tells him to plant 1,000 fruit trees as punishment

The order issued by the Jabalpur bench of the MP High Court stated: 'SHO Ravendra Diwedi, presently posted at police station city Kotwali, has tendered [an] apology for not serving the victim [the HC notice] in time. He has promised not only to pay the cost of Rs 5,000 imposed on him by the Inspector General of Police but also to plant at least 1,000 trees between 1 July to 31 August at Chitrakoot in Satna district.' In an order issued 24 June, MP High Court justices Vivek Agarwal and Avanindra Kumar Singh directed Ravendra Dwivedi, the station house officer (SHO) of the Kotwali Police Station in Satna, to plant 1,000 fruit trees, including mango, jamun, Mahua, and guava, among others. Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh High Court, in a unique punishment, has ordered an inspector posted in Satna district to plant 1,000 fruit trees for his failure to pass on an HC-issued notice to a minor victim of a sexual offence. The order further pointed out, 'Let fruiting trees like mango, jamun, Mahua, guava, etc., be planted and their photograph sent alongside GPS location to the registry, in support of the compliance report.' The court also directed Ashutosh Gupta, Superintendent of Police (SP), Satna, to inspect the 1,000 planted trees before filing an affidavit, along with the compliance report. The court ordered inspector Dwivedi to bear the costs of planting the trees, as well as ensure their care for a year, which will be essential for their germination and survival. A senior police officer with the Madhya Pradesh Police explained that when an accused in a sexual offence challenged any conviction, the court would issue a notice to the victim. 'Through this notice, the victim has an opportunity to be present before the court and make themselves heard. This particular case concerns a sexual offence case from 2018 when the SHO's posting was at the Sabhapur Police Station in Satna.' 'The accused challenged the conviction, and subsequently, the court issued a notice to the victim. But, SHO Ravendra Diwedi failed to hand the notice over to the victim on time. In this regard, the court has pulled him up,' said the senior police officer. When The Print contacted Ashutosh Gupta, SP, Satna, said, 'We have received the order of the honourable court, and we will be complying with it.' Punjab unveils security plan for Muharram observances

The Punjab government has launched an extensive security plan for the upcoming Muharram, combining digital surveillance, inter-agency coordination, and infrastructure safety measures to ensure peaceful religious observances across the province. According to the Home Department, the month of Muharram is expected to begin on June 26 or 27, subject to moon sighting. A digital monitoring portal has been activated to oversee majalis, procession routes, and sensitive locations. All deputy commissioners have been directed to upload related data within five days. The system will be managed by Kamran Taj, Network Engineer from the Home Department's MIS section. In anticipation of heightened security needs, the department has formally requested the Inspector General of Police to coordinate the deployment of Pakistan Army and Punjab Rangers. Officials have been asked to provide details on locations and deployment duration within a week. The request also includes mobile signal jamming in select sensitive zones. To prevent sectarian tensions, the government has issued guidelines mandating that non-Shia congregations remain separate from Ahl-e-Tashee events. The directive emphasizes the need for inclusive security arrangements across all sects. As part of infrastructure safety, electricity companies have been instructed to address loose or hanging wires along procession routes. District officials will conduct reconnaissance to identify risk-prone areas, with technical teams on standby. Loudspeaker use will be monitored under the Punjab Sound Systems (Regulation) Act, 2015, with daily field reports and strict enforcement measures. District Intelligence Committees are to finalize contingency plans and update lists of speakers under restrictions. The Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department will coordinate Ittehad Bain-ul-Muslimeen committee meetings at divisional levels to maintain sectarian harmony. Unauthorised processions or gatherings will not be permitted, with all activities to be conducted within approved parameters. The provincial government stated that these measures are part of a broader commitment to peaceful Muharram commemorations while managing long-standing security challenges.

Prashant Thakur, Saleem in race to be next DG&IGP in Karnataka

BENGALURU: With incumbent Director General & Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) Alok Mohan scheduled to retire on May 21, speculation about the next police chief has picked up pace in the state's bureaucracy. According to sources, who did not wish to be identified, the office of the Chief Secretary has written to the Accountant General informing him about the superannuation of Mohan on May 21, on 'completion' of his two-year-term for disbursement of retirement benefits. The government has, however, not issued any order regarding his tenure so far, which has created a lot of confusion in the state bureaucracy. As per the Civil List of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of Karnataka cadre, Mohan was scheduled to retire on April 30 on attaining the age of 60 years. He was appointed in-charge DG&IGP on May 22, 2023 after his predecessor -- then police chief Praveen Sood -- was appointed Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Mohan's appointment as Head of Police Force (HoPF) was confirmed on August 5, 2023. He belongs to the 1987 batch of IPS and is the seniormost IPS officer in Karnataka. The Supreme Court had issued directions on the appointment, and a fixed two-year tenure of the Director General of Police (DGP) in the Prakash Singh judgment of 2006, but the Karnataka Police (KP) Act, amended in 2012, states that the DG&IGP 'so appointed shall have a tenure of not less than two years, subject to superannuation'.
