Knowledge key to the future, says Bharat Biotech Executive Chairman Krishna M. Ella
The future will be divided between those who possess knowledge and those who do not have it, Krishna M. Ella, founder and Executive Chairman of Bharat Biotech International Ltd, has said. Dr. Ella was speaking at the 13th convocation of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER Thiruvananthapuram) on Saturday. Dr. Ella observed how technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum science, electric vehicles, solar power and renewable energy and the hydrogen economy were transforming the world. He expressed his belief that thorium, sourced from the coastal sands of Kerala and other locations, would be the future of nuclear energy. He told the new graduates that they were graduating at a time when the technological front was poised for major revolutions in the coming five to 10 years. 'Embrace cutting-edge tech' Arvind Anant Natu, Chairperson, Board of Governors of IISER Thiruvananthapuram, encouraged the graduates to embrace cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and the Internet of Things, as powerful tools in their scientific and entrepreneurial journey. Calling for a holistic and socially responsible approach, he emphasised the importance of addressing societal problems through interdisciplinary thinking. J.N. Moorthy, Director, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, presented a report on the institute's activities. Degrees were conferred on 258 BS-MS, 76 MSc, 15 MS (Research), 26 PhD, and 15 Integrated PhD graduates at the 13th convocation. Medals The Institute Gold Medal for all-round excellence was conferred on Jacob Cherry Sam. The Director's Gold Medal for Academic Excellence' was awarded to Eswar Krishnan N.A., and the Cultural Medal was presented to Adithya J. for contributions to campus cultural life.

Addressing the fresh graduates at the seventh annual convocation of Indian Institute of Information technology, Dharwad held on its campus on Friday, she said that there has been a stellar achievements of India in science and technology, and exhorted graduating students to see that the newer technology is used for the betetrment of society. Kalaiselvi reminded the students about the investments made by their parents, teachers and society at large, to ensure their success as graduates from a premier national institution, and urged them to fulfill their ambitions and become worthy citizens of the country. She further stated that this is a knowledge-driven era and only those possessing exquisite skills have a fair chance to excel. Lot of emphasis has been laid on providing skills to the young workforce and therefore the students along with academics should adapt skills in shaping their career, she said. He detailed an analogy of coders being akin to handloom weavers, weaving code by hand as of today. Once powerful coding machines like powerlooms in the past arrive, the landscape will change and very few coders will be needed, so IT professionals will have to find other innovative jobs, he said. SR Mahadev Prasanna, director, IIIT Dharwad, gave a bird's view on the achievements of the institute. Amrit Anand of electronics and communication engineering with 9.73 CPI, secured the President of India gold medal and Institute Gold Medal while Prerana Bhat of data science and artificial intelligence and Kartik Avinash of computer science engineering won the Institute Gold Medals. Arsh Desai was presented the Director's Medal while Ms Enduri Jahnavi received the Best Outgoing Girl Student medal. A total 256 graduate degrees and one PhD degree were awarded during the ceremony. As many as 132 students from computer science and engineering, 69 students from data science and artificial intelligence (DSAI) and 55 students from electronics and communication engineering were conferred degrees.
