Four hotels where you can enjoy a mini getaway with your beloved pet

Short getaways at pet-friendly hotels here are increasingly popular with pet owners who feel guilty about leaving their animal companions behind when they travel overseas. There is also a broader lifestyle shift with Dink (dual income, no kids) couples who dote on their fur kids, according to Ms Dawn Teo, chief operating officer at Amara Holdings. Amara Sanctuary Sentosa, which is run by Amara Holdings, is one of several hotels in Singapore that have welcomed guests and their dogs since launching its Pampered Paws package in 2019. Cats are not forgotten and a Pampered Meows package was started in 2020, which has seen growing take-up rates over the years, says Ms Teo. Pet-friendly stays at the 140-room resort accounted for close to 100 room nights in December 2024, she adds. Moreover, more than 80 per cent of its Pampered Paws guests chose to stay in the more spacious and private villas and courtyard suites, with prices from $1,000 a night. While prices for pet-friendly packages are usually more expensive than the usual hotel rates, they come with extras - such as pet amenities - and offer larger rooms with more space for the four-legged ones to run around. At InterContinental Singapore, its Pet Getaway Stay package, launched in 2021, is currently the best-performing room package, says Mr Andreas Kraemer, the hotel's general manager. The package includes an afternoon tea set for pets. According to Mr Adel Aramouni, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong's general manager, the property receives an average of five to six bookings a week for its Pet Getaway room package. He adds that 95 per cent of such stays fall on Fridays and Saturdays, reflecting the growing trend of short weekend staycations among pet owners. Those searching for places to chill with their canine or feline buddies on weekends can check out these getaways. Amara Sanctuary Sentosa Amara Sanctuary Sentosa Pampered Paws staycation. PHOTO: AMARA SANCTUARY SENTOSA The Pampered Paws staycation package (from $680 a night) offers two adults and one dog of any size to stay in the courtyard suite, verandah studio, verandah suite, or one- or two-bedroom villa. Each dog gets a breakfast set from three options, all made from premium human-grade ingredients curated by local artisan pet kitchen and bakery Wholesome Paws. The Bark Breakfast includes spinach and tomato frittata, English sausage, paw scone and banana pancakes, while the Ohayo Breakfast features a Japanese-inspired spread of tamagoyaki, saba shioyaki, salmon shiozake, pork and pumpkin onigiri, and miso soup. There is also the Pawsh Breakfast that includes spinach and tomato frittata, beef and broccoli casserole and a salmon pawffle. Throw in a Family Pupnic Set, from $145, and catch the sunset at Palawan Beach, a five-minute stroll from the resort. Pawrents get a club sandwich and truffle fries, a choice of pizza, chicken or pork satay, fruit, snacks and two beverages. Dogs can munch on a watermelon bone broth pupsicle, salmon quiche, chicken kebab and other gourmet treats. For feline owners, the Pampered Meows package (from $486 a night) offers a stay in the deluxe room that overlooks a garden with multi-functional spaces for cats to engage in active play or bird-watching. Each cat gets a meal made from premium ingredients and a complimentary Furkid Welcome Amenity Box from Kohepets, Singapore's largest online pet store, that includes dry and wet cat food, three cans of wet cat food, liquid and air-dried cat treats, cat wet wipes and a cat toy. At the end of the stay, cat owners get to take home a free Vetreska scratch box. To provide comfort to the cats during their stay in a new environment, guests are encouraged to take along cat litter or items that carry the scent of home. Sweet endings at Coda

[SINGAPORE] The centrepiece of many watering holes is a gleaming display of liquor bottles behind the bar, in a parade of familiar brand names. Yet what is striking at Coda isn't this visual cue, but its glaring absence. There are no bottles behind the bar, nor brand names on the menu. These omissions were the deliberate choice of owner Michel Lu. The aim is to encourage customers to judge each drink 'on its own merit', rather than rely on recognisable names to form conclusions, he said. 'I wanted this to be a clean and pure space,' said Lu, who also founded pan-Asian craft spirits brand The Orientalist Spirits. 'It's not about whether this is a Macallan cocktail, or an Orientalist Spirits cocktail. What matters are the flavours, and how you enjoy the drink.' A space within a space Getting to Coda is so tricky that guests who make reservations receive a text message with directions. A NEWSLETTER FOR YOU Friday, 2 pm Lifestyle Our picks of the latest dining, travel and leisure options to treat yourself. Sign Up Sign Up First, take an escalator to the second floor of the InterContinental Singapore Robertson Quay. Next, push past curtains on the right to enter a dim, box-like room lined with mirrors. Finally, locate a blinking blue sensor beside a candle – a wave of the hand will trigger a door to open into Coda's main 16-seater room. The experience is meant to be disorienting, said Lu. 'When you first arrive, you're like, 'What do I do?' We wanted a portal that would insulate the actual space, so that we'd never be disrupted by light or sound.' At Coda, there are no bottles behind the bar. By removing visible alcohol brands, owner Michel Lu aims to encourage customers to judge each drink 'on its own merit'. PHOTO: CODA Coda's interior is minimalist, with small tables along a long leather couch and a few armchairs. An adjoining 10-seater room is usually closed to the public, but can be booked for private events. Soft furnishings – a carpeted floor, false suede ceiling and thick curtains – create a cosy cocoon while absorbing sound. Warm cove lighting and a gentle woody fragrance complete the vibe. In the spotlight – literally – is a custom-built bar counter near the centre of the room. As the only spot with direct lighting, the bar was designed to resemble a stage, with the bartender as its star, said Lu. The open concept also invites guests to even go behind the counter to speak with the bartender. A coda is the concluding segment of a piece of music or literary work. General manager Treyna Zhang hopes the bar can similarly be a place where customers round off their day. 'We look forward to being that sweet spot, that little happy ending for you at the end.' Spotlighting Asian spirits and flavours Coda's cocktail menu features 16 signature tipples in four sections, each themed after a different mood. For instance: tranquillity for Blue Hour, eternal happiness for Elysian Fields, chaos for Fragmented Consciousness, and bliss for Chasing Fireflies. Blue Hour – an actual term that refers to the period just before sunrise or after sunset – thus features subtler flavours, while Fragmented Consciousness offers experimental options that incorporate unlikely ingredients from kimchi to artichoke. At Coda, Asian spirits and flavours are the focus – beginning with a complimentary welcome drink of local black tea infused with bergamot liqueur, inspired by a classic negroni. 'Whether you're from South Asia, China, South Korea, Japan or Taiwan, tea unites Asia. The West drinks tea, but it's from Asia,' said Lu, noting that several cocktails on the menu contain tea notes. These include the bar's bestseller, the Coda Martini, in which vodka is mixed with rooibos tea and tieguanyin, then finished off with a dash of Calvados. The bar's bestseller is the Coda Martini, in which vodka is mixed with rooibos tea and tieguanyin, then finished off with a dash of Calvados. PHOTO: CODA While it is a spin on the classic vodka martini, other drinks stray further from their source. A re-imagining of the Singapore Sling, the cocktail Fling retains only the original recipe's gin base and pineapple juice. 'The Singapore Sling is a very dated, sexist drink from colonial times; it's not a great drink, but it represents Singapore,' said Lu. 'I felt it was time to create something more befitting of Singapore today.' Fling is a variation of the Singapore Fling, which Lu launched in 2024 at Marina Bay Sands' Spago Bar & Lounge. 'Back then, I had actually created the Singapore Fling as a contemporary take on the Singapore Sling,' he explained. 'But we wanted to do a more elegant and cleaner version for Coda, which resulted in Fling.' The Singapore Fling and Fling share a recipe: a gin base infused with chrysanthemum, snow pear and red dates, then combined with Lillet rose, hibiscus sour plum tea, pineapple juice, calamansi juice and ginger flower water. The difference is in the execution: the Singapore Fling is shaken, while Fling is clarified. Those looking to turn up the heat can order Smoke, Coda's only hot cocktail. Described by Lu as an 'Asian-style' hot toddy, Smoke is a blend of three whiskeys; honey lemon fermented for two-and-a-half years; and the Japanese roasted tea iribancha, for an extra touch of smokiness. Besides cocktails, Coda offers limited categories of beer, sake, champagne and wine. A Japanese food menu will be launched in July, and will offer a la carte dishes such as udon, bara chirashi and sashimi. Fling

Frasers Property makes second bid to privatise Frasers Hospitality Trust in $1.37 billion deal

FHT has a portfolio of 14 hotels and serviced residences across nine cities in Asia, Australia and Europe. It includes InterContinental Singapore (pictured. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO SINGAPORE - Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi's Frasers Property is making a second attempt to take private its hospitality real-estate investment trust at a valuation of $1.37 billion. The company on May 14 announced an offer of 71 cents per share for Frasers Hospitality Trust (FHT). This represents a 7 per cent premium to FHT's last traded price of 66.5 cents before the counter announced a trading halt on May 13. It is also a 36.3 per cent premium to the FHT's volume weighted average price for the 12-month period up to the last trading date. Frasers Property owns a 24.23 per cent stake in FHT, while its majority shareholder and Mr Charoen's family conglomerate TCC Assets has a 36.72 per cent stake. An attempted privatization in 2022 at 70 cents a share - which valued FHT then at $1.35 billion - failed when it fell short of a 75 per cent shareholder threshold required. The latest offer to take the trust private is the outcome of a strategic review conducted by the directors of the trust after they evaluated various options, both companies said in a joint statement. They cited challenges due to the changing macroeconomic environment, such as a weaker foreign exchange rate against the Singapore dollar, higher interest rate environment, global cost inflation and unforeseen events such as Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. 'The directors view the privatisation as a viable option for stapled securityholders to immediately realise their investment at a premium to net asset value and offers strong deal certainty in terms of timing and execution,' they said. 'Frasers Hospitality Trust is expected to continue to face both macroeconomic headwinds and structural limitations which may limit its ability to grow its distribution per stapled security and net asset value,' they added. The hospitality trust's smaller size relative to its peers has also contributed to a higher cost of equity and lower debt headroom which limits its ability to scale up, they said. Its properties are also located in areas where the currencies have depreciated significantly - by 20 per cent to 30 per cent - against the Singapore dollar since its listing, they noted. FHT has a portfolio of 14 hotels and serviced residences across nine cities in Asia, Australia and Europe. The properties include InterContinental Singapore, Fraser Suites Sydney and Park International London. Listed on the SGX mainboard since 2014, FHT has a market capitalisation of $1.27 billion, with a portfolio valued at $2 billion as of Sept 2024. The trust's managers chief executive officer Eric Gan said: 'The decision to propose this scheme was not taken lightly. The scheme will require the necessary regulatory and court approvals, and is subject to the approval of a majority of its stapled securityholders. Frasers Property group chief financial officer Loo Choo Leong said the group's strategy is focused on delivering sustainable and targeted long-term returns across cycles. 'Hospitality is a core business for Frasers Property, and while we remain mindful of near-term challenges facing the hospitality sector, we maintain a long-term investment perspective,' he said. Frasers Property, which also called for a trading halt on May 13, has total assets of approximately $38.9 billion as at March 31. It operates across commercial and business parks, hospitality, industrial and logistics, residential and retail, with businesses in South-east Asia, Australia, Europe, Britain and China. It also owns or operates serviced apartments and hotels in 20 countries across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
